On June 13, 2014 the graduating students whom we honoured and

with whom we celebrated were not the only graduates in the room. Addressing them for the last time as Principal was another kind of graduate. After forty-four years of total service, nearly half that time

as a Principal, Brian Boden (‘62) had opportunity to address the graduating class even as he, himself, was “graduating” from leadership in Christian education to a new chapter in his life. This same evening, Mark Kennedy, the Director of the Eastern Canadian Division of the

Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) presented Brian with the ACSI Career Service and Achievement Award. This is an annual award given in the region that encompasses everywhere in Canada east of Winnipeg, Manitoba. There are years when no one meets

the stringent criteria of the award and in 2014 only Brian Boden exceeded them: at least thirty-five years of service in education, with at least twenty-five in Christian schools, and at least ten consecutive years in the same school or board. If an administrator, the candidate must hold either a Master’s Degree or formal administrator credentials (Brian holds three Master’s degrees and his Principal Qualifications). It was a wonderful distinction

to see Brian recognized by an external, international organization reinforcing what the Great Lakes family has known of Brian for more than four decades: he is a tireless, thoughtful, and dedicated servant of God who has blessed more than a generation of young people. Brian and his wife Mary (’62, née Jones) have not only helped to build and shape the ministry here at Great Lakes, they have provided servant-leadership in churches across the province and in New York State. Though Brian is the visible face, those close to him have seen the unflagging vitality and support he

has always had from a true partner in Mary. The school is a different place without his quirky humour, his penchant for deconstructing and reworking words and phrases (have a good and a God day), or his ability to quote the Bible as well as historical, political, and musical (Bob Dylan or Bruce Cockburn, anyone?) figures. His common phrases (“Good morning” at any time of the day), his advocacy on behalf of faculty and students, his compassion for the struggling and oppressed, his commitment to both education and spiritual development set a high bar and leave a rich legacy for those who would continue in the work he leaves. We would be remiss if we did not also mention his love of our national sport (did you know he was passionate about hockey?!). Brian’s lifelong experiences and involvement with all levels of the sport from national down to local—efforts that continue even today—could fill a full biography of its own. Suffice to say, his involvement in hockey has reflected his career at GL: advocating, protecting, and making it better and safer. In understanding Brian’s greatest legacy, it is also significant to note that he has preached and taught almost every Sunday since he was a teen. No one can dispute his love for God, God’s Word, and God’s people. When one considers more than forty years of service it is easy to be reminded of the faithful Caleb who, only with Joshua, trusted in God’s provision when confronted by intimidating enemies and lived to see Israel move into the Promised Land. As Caleb stood on the threshold of that land, he said: “Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while

Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!  I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.” As anyone who has worked in any ministry can attest, there are stretches of time while in service that feel like wandering in the desert. What an encouragement for those who follow to see servant-leaders like Brian and Mary Boden, who persevered and remained faithful not just for a season, but for a lifetime. In October 2014, we were blessed to be able to significantly renovate our library, which was originally dedicated to our first Principal, Bruce Merritt. Upon completion of this work, we rededicated the library in honour of both our first and longest serving Principals: Bruce Merritt and Brian Boden, respectively. Brian continues to volunteer in our Bible class program and to visit congregations on behalf of the school. We are grateful for his advocacy of Christian Education and of the Gospel and that he is an effective ambassador of both.

Always a good sport, Brian took a selfie with each member of the class of 2012, including Emily Craig.

of Student Population For 2015-2016

Has Great Lakes Christian High School become an

International school? Perhaps at first glance some might conclude that, but the short answer is NO. We have enjoyed a healthy number of returning students (73) with an additional 50 new students. North American students total 68 and there are

55 International students coming to us from China, Hong Kong, Korea, Nigeria, Taiwan, Haiti and Japan. Our all school photo paints a rich and vibrant tapestry. As another year draws to a close it has been wonderful and exciting to see relationships building between our International and North American students. It is a delight to see International

students going to a North American student’s home for the weekend. It is a delight to witness at the time of this writing, three Grade nine boys coming up the front walk arm in arm and laughing with each other. As well, many of our International students are making meaningful connections through the one

to one Friendspeak program (learning English while reading the Bible) at one of our area Churches of Christ. At our annual Ministry Leaders’ Breakfast Grade 9 student Difei (Fay) Zheng and Grade 12 student Somachi Agbapu spoke incredibly well about their Great Lakes experience and what it is like to move from another country for the first time as a residential student, and to experience snow for the first time! While the above particular paragraph seems to have focused a lot on the international component of our program here at Great Lakes we cannot deny the many blessings our

community as a whole experience by their presence. The great commission to go and make disciples of all nations has a bit of a different twist in that we have several nations coming to us and increasing our fertile ground right here. A wonderful opportunity we take seriously, but not at the expense of encouraging our students to Seek, Serve and Become like Christ. In the Admissions Office, we have received a significant increase of interest and applications from students in our local Homeschool community. Great Lakes is privileged to serve these families. Many new students at GL are not just new students to GL, but

new to classroom learning. Some students begin their transition to larger learning environments in Grade 9, others come for particular courses (e.g. Science or English) in their senior years. It is exciting to partner with these families in the education of their children as we find we share common values in both academic education and the discipleship of the next generation. The Admissions team of Tim Alexander and Ingrid Kielstra are creating several new ways to foster a greater presence within our immediate and Greater Toronto areas and internationally with a number of initiatives:

◆ Ministry Leaders’ Breakfast: Over the last three years we have hosted ministry leaders for a breakfast event. During this time, over 14 students have spoken clearly about the positive impact of Great Lakes in their life allowing over 20 ministry leaders a quick snapshot into the benefits and blessings of a Christian educational experience at Great Lakes.

◆ Hosting Pizza Days and Tim Bit Assemblies in area Christian schools for Grades 7 & 8 classes.

◆ Participate in Parent-Teacher Nights, Science Fairs and Awards Nights in area Christian Schools: These opportunities create unique interactions with parents and students to discuss and highlight the distinctive characteristics of GLCHS. Characteristics such as excellent academics, spiritual focus, international exposure, and extra-curricular options for all students to name a few.

◆ A greater use of Skype interviews with Tim Alexander, our International Recruiter to guarantee stronger international applications.

◆ Youth Connect – monthly meetings between Ingrid Kielstra, our North American Recruiter, and area Christian youth workers. These connections help to share with the local community the difference a Christian school can provide for families that seek an educational environment that is consistent with their values and beliefs.

◆ An increased participation from the Admissions Office to revitalize and plan Chorus trips.

Looney applied to us in the early spring of 2012. During the phone interview I thought he said his name was Louie.

Turns out the special name was an omen of the special boy who followed. On his personal reference his former principal had checked off “one of the top few I have ever encountered” for “Effort / Determination”, “Honesty / integrity” and “Maturity”. That is great to see on a reference but would it be enough to help him through the adjustment time of his new school, language, country and home? Looney arrived September 2012 for grade nine which is a little unusual when Asian students seldom come before grade eleven. He was tested for English and found to be lacking. Vocabulary was

a Grade Two level and writing was about a Grade Five level. Two parts of the Canadian Standardization test (CAT) he was not able to finish. He was therefore put in a “language acquisition” holding status – a letter was sent to his parents explaining the situation. Teachers were asked to give support but not give marks as he would be auditing all his classes. He had something to prove. He worked! His hard work paid off quickly – he was reassessed and got credit in his courses passing everything with 70s to 80s. In his Grade Eleven year Looney was elected, by the student body, to be Mr. Great Lakes (Male Citizen of the Year) as a model student and leader. More importantly, it was the year that Looney decided to follow Jesus, and he was baptized in Beamsville. In the summer of 2014 he was in China and actively spread

the gospel to others. This year Looney is a senior Grade Twelve student. He has joined chorus, leads the school band, and regularly attends church. He is often seen carrying his Bible. He admits that he doesn’t want to leave us. He actively helps to share the Gospel with his fellow Chinese students, and always seeks opportunities to serve God. Looney went interior camping with me in June 2015 and didn’t go back to China in the summer. He went to Pioneer Christian camp to volunteer for the summer for which he paid more than $2,500 for this opportunity. Looney’s parents don’t speak English so, as a devoted son, he is making all the arrangements for them to travel to and stay in Canada when he graduates in June 2016. We will miss Looney when he does leave.

A Success Story of a Young Chinese Man

REFERRAL INCENTIVE Parents and Alumni are reminded that GLCHS appreciates your referrals to new families. If you introduce a new family to GLCHS – one that GL is NOT already aware of, and this family sends their children to GL, a referral recognition of $500 is paid in tuition credit to your family. Please speak to Ingrid Kielstra for more details and be sure to send families her way. Over $2000 has been paid to attending families in the past three years. A positive referral is a blessing both to a new and a returning family, so please consider who you might refer today. Finally, the power of the personal story is perhaps the best way to conclude this article. Great Lakes exists to help students learn that we have an amazing and loving God, receive a Christ centered education, and contribute to humanity. The following is a story about one of our current students.

RE-WIRING of

PERRY HALLWe in the GL community

are very proud of a grand old century

building on our campus, presently named Perry Hall, also known as the Senator Gibson home and previously named Gibson Hall. Originally built c. 1890, this building has served our school in many ways and configurations. For most of us, we identify this building as our main “girls dorm”. Over the last ten years, administration has become

increasingly concerned with the the combination of mid-twentieth-century and, in some places, knob-and-tube, wiring. This wiring had become a fire hazard that was going to require an estimated $150,000-$200,000 to replace. As the school’s financial status is often precarious, this important project seemed out of reach. Marvin Johnson, an electrician from Toronto and previous board member examined this situation and provided a solution to the

situation. Marvin reached out to several electricians within our church community to create a volunteer team that dedicated a week to rewire one floor each summer. This team was led and directed by Seymour Azzoparde, David Azzoparde, Leo Razon and Bud Dearing. Each summer, this group of electricians was supported by many other volunteers who provided dry-walling and painting that was required after the electrical work was completed.

This team dedicated long hours during the heat of the summer in a non-air-conditioned environment that often involved working in hot rooms, dirty attics and crawl spaces. We are happy to report that this project is in the final stages of completion the summer of 2016. The entire GL community is very thankful to this group of volunteers who have improved the safety and functionality of our girl’s residence.

This year Parent Council has been introduced to Great Lakes! In the past, similar

type groups like GL Home and School Association were created to make a closer tie between the school and our student families. Bev Boden (’89) approached me in the spring to see what could be done to create a Parent Council. This was also an initiative that the Great Lakes board was very interested in seeing come to fruition. Bev brings her extensive experience with Parent Council at Jacob Beam Public School to our new Great Lakes Parent Council. She will be the appointed Chair for the first two years and help guide the process of council meetings and procedures. The Council elected Sharon Fecik as Secretary Treasurer and Nicole Breukleman as Vice Chair. The

Council meets once a month from 7-8 pm and all parents are welcome. Attendance has been excellent, with over 10 parents present at each meeting. In September, parents heard from the Student Council Executive: Brittany Pompilli - President, Caitlin Boden - Vice President of Communications and Chapman Li - Vice President of Finance. The executive shared their passion for Jesus and GL, and explained what led them to choose the school verse for 2015-2016, Isaiah 40: 31. Kerri Kennedy (’90) - Vice Principal shared the new classes being offered this year in Bible, Food and Nutrition, Design and Technology, and Visual Arts. She introduced the new teachers this year: Ms. Reimer (French), and Ms. Kaptein (Arts). During our October meeting, parents met the Grade 12 student representatives, Kieran

Yorke, Hailey Yang, and Tristan Majetic. The students shared their perspective on the school year thus far and highlighted the weekend retreat to Muskoka, Fall Fest, trips to Stratford, and their personal experiences. Ingrid Kielstra shared the Battle of the Books initiative that Great Lakes is heading up in our local area with local schools and businesses. Josh (’07) and Emily Hunter shared their video of students who shared how Great Lakes had significantly impacted their understanding of who God is, how he loves them, and their baptisms. The Council welcomed the opportunity to be involved in Alumni Weekend and to host parents and potential students at our November Open House. The Council continues to explore ways that they can help support the students and the school.

HAPPY TO HAVE… Parent Council Back

What is a Great Lakes Chorus trip all about? Many a stu-

dent has come through the doors of Great Lakes to join its chorus program. The chorus, as is some-what self-evident from the name, is a singing group which performs a cappella songs and hymns of worship. The highlight of the year as far as chorus goes, is the March

Break Trip. These trips take the entire chorus on a road trip in one or more buses for several days to a location in Canada or the United States. On this trip, stu-dents deepen relationships with both each other and God, sing for their supper, and fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ, and have unique local and/or cultural experiences.

On a trip for ten days with much of that taken up by driving in close quarters can really bring people together. Students have no choice but to bond over shared experiences. Whether travelling in western Canada  (June 2015) or eastern Canada (March 2016), when you are on a long bus ride, there is very little to do but get to know the people around you.

These connections were developed by conversations on a bus about everything from food to memes to Jesus. Worship times and deep discussion often surfaced, espe-cially on the late night drives. In addition to knowing other students better, chorus members also deepen their relationships with God. By using their gifts of voice, these young people have a keen sense that they have op-portunity both to glorify God and encourage His children every time they sing. Moreover, they are blessed by the hospitality and warmth of brothers and sisters in Christ across the continent who model Christ for our young people.

Moments of experiencing God also occur in times of quiet and personal reflection, which are always a part of these trips. Whether independently or while talking together en route to a next destination, students are encour-aged to see the chorus experience as spiritually formative. During one long bus ride in 2015, the students started talking about faith. After hours of discussion and Bible reading, one student decided to commit herself to Christ and be baptized.  Of course, chorus trips are also a lot of fun. Visits to geographic wonders like the Rocky Moun-tains or a tidal basin in the Bay of Fundy provide awe-inspiring

experiences that reinforce the greatness of our creator. Joy erupts when a stop includes a group pic-ture beside a giant moose (Moose Jaw, SK), a giant Canadian goose (Wawa, ON) or a giant lobster (Shediac, NB). Exploration of cultural centres in cities like Hali-fax, Washington D.C., Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Calgary (to name a few) broaden the horizons of these young people.  Just joining chorus can change a student’s life. Whether it is through others, God, or the envi-ronment, students develop a sense of wonder and the thrill to be alive – a zest and passion that will propel them to bigger and better things, especially in His service.

TThis year the Girls’ Basketball team is made up of ten girls. The team managers/

statisticians are Ethan Kennedy (Gr. 9), Jillian Bermel (Gr. 10), and Saira Cariaga (Gr.10). Under the watchful eye of Mr. May they practiced every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from September to early November 2015. In that time, the

girls made vast improvements to their ball handling skills, shooting ability, and fitness levels. Win or lose, playing harder and outworking the other team was the ladies’ ultimate goal. Although the team was composed almost entirely of junior players, the girls were able to hold their own in the senior league. Playing eight games in regular season, plus two

exhibition games, the Lady Lakers were able to win a game against both Beamsville District Secondary School and South Lincoln High School! More importantly than that, they developed their skills, learned new plays, and grew together as a team. They played in the Christian Conference in November, qualifying for the semi-finals in which they placed third.

The 2015 Laker Cross Country Season went by quickly (pun intended)! Twelve committed

members practiced six days a week to build their endurance to compete. The senior boys division had the most participation with seven but we also had some newcomers in grade 9 that are already looking forward to the spring track season. The cross country season is two months long. September is the time to build a small base of

endurance while October is for trying to develop some speed while practicing competition strategy. The athletes practiced hard on the track on Tuesdays and hit the hills of the Niagara escarpment on Thursdays. Every other day except Sunday were used for “easy” runs. Most of the students joined for the fitness aspect of the sport and did not have ambitions for winning competitions. Over the course of the season ALL the athletes saw their times improve which is a great victory by itself.

The team was coached by Ms. Marijka Westerhof and Mr. Eli Banta. The athletes who participated (pictured above, left to right) were: Micah Vandewetering (Gr. 9), Andrew Fecik (Gr. 11), Kevin Seong (Gr. 11), David Kralt (Gr. 12), Eric Lee (Gr. 11), Zavier Thibault (Gr. 9), and Rebecca Muysson (Gr. 10). Missing: Somachi Agbapu (Gr. 12), Gabriel Boden (Gr. 9), Debem Onuorah (Gr. 11), Curtis Stavinga (Gr. 12), and Evan Douglas-Fish (Gr. 12).

2015GRADUATIONNathan Lansdell (’07) had the opportunity to address the gradu-ating Class of 2015. In his speech he shared three lessons that he’s learned in the past few years.

Number 1: Be extremely diligent with the privacy settings on your Facebook account. We live in a world where social media is no lon-ger a wave that the up-and-coming generation rides for a time and then moves on. It is ubiquitous; it's every-where. And sometimes, people who you don't expect to be on Facebook, are capable of taking an inside look at your life without you knowing. Number 2: Do not let the deci-sions you make in life be governed by fear. Nathan shared how he, like most of us, has a fear of public speaking. He told the crowd that

eight years before, when he was grad-uating from high school, he was the Valedictorian of his class and when given the opportunity to address his classmates, he passed. When Nathan was trying to figure out if he was going to give this speech, he came across this quote from a song, “I am no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God.” With this point he con-cluded by saying, God has promised to provide everything we need, but if we think we don't need anything, how will we see God provide? When you feel fear, let that be a signal for you to watch and see how God is going to provide for you. If you run away from fear, you also run away from the opportunity to see God work. But if you let Him, God will use fear to sharpen you, challenge you and teach you new things.

Number 3: Spend regular time with God. This isn't about com-pleting a checklist; read my Bible, check, said a prayer, check. It's about connection, communion, quality time with our Father and Creator. Sometimes that is through prayer or the Bible, but don't put limits on God. Get creative with how you might connect with Him. Journal, listen to podcasts, draw a picture, take in His creation, sing. No matter the method, choose to have time set aside for just you and God with no distractions.

Highlighting

Max Mowrer (1925–2015; Principal of GLCC 1971–1978)

Max spent his life serving others. In particular, he played various

roles, many administrative, at high schools (most of them Christian) in Japan, Canada, and the USA. Having previously served on faculty, Max and his wife Mildred (a lifetime member of the WAVES, she passed away in 1999) left GLCC to become the President of Western Christian College, a post he filled until 1985. He was a devout preacher, teacher, and missionary until he retired in 1993. Max continued to preach and teach and serve in other administrative capacities at whatever church he attended after that time. One of his loves was teaching music; he directed the GLCC chorus for two years during his tenure at Great Lakes. Max continued to support GLCC long after he left its employ.

Evelyn Perry (1920–2013; Music, Girls’ Bible Classes, and Chorus 1952–1962)

Eugene and Evelyn Perry were charter employees

of the fledgling GLCC in 1952. Evelyn served as Great Lakes’ first chorus director. Given her love of music, it is appropriate that she is remembered as the writer of our school song, “GLCC, We Love You.” In addition to teaching at Great Lakes, Evelyn helped run

the Gospel Herald Bookstore, which was established in 1953. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s (up until she and Eugene went to mission in Zambia), Evelyn served as a “GLCC Rep.” alongside Doreen Ellis for the WAVES; she later became a lifetime member. Evelyn was a faithful servant in all that she did. The present day Girls’ Dormitory in the former home of Senator Gibson was renamed “Perry Hall” to honour and appreciate the commitment and service Evelyn and Eugene have afforded the school since its start.

Eileen Dale (1927–2014; Speech, Dramatics, English 1959–1972; Commercial 1980–1982)

Ask GLCC students who participated

in the “Footlights” Drama Club in the 1960s what they remember of Eileen Dale and they will almost all say “Louder.” Eileen’s love of theatre was honed when she served for five years with the Hamilton Players’ Guild, influencing her degree choice (a BA in speech and drama from Harding College), and roles at GLCC where she served alongside her husband, Walter (Social Sciences and Bible, early 1950s and throughout the 1960s; Academic Dean 1978-1982). Behind the scenes, she was a lifetime member of the WAVES. Eileen always exhibited a zest for living, especially for her Lord. Although theatre was her passion she always relished the opportunity to speak to ladies’ groups or to take

classes at Great Lakes Bible College. Beginning in 2003, the Eileen Dale Dramatic Award of Excellence has been presented to the winners of the Dramatic Monologues and Dialogues as a part of the annual Speech Arts Festival.

Art Fleming (1923–2014; Board of Directors 1966–1989)

Art and Val Fleming have been among the most committed and

consistent supporters of Great Lakes for decades. All of their children are GLCC alumni, Val is a Life Member of the WAVES, and Art’s gift of leadership was a blessing at the board level for nearly a quarter century. Art was a man of few words, but when he spoke it was with wisdom and conviction. Although he was a very successful business man recognized by several awards in the poultry industry, he lived a life that revealed a strong work ethic was only one of his core values that included extensive community philanthropy and involvement, attention to family, and a commitment to serving God. Since 1980, Art and Val have provided the Fleming Award, an annual tuition award provided for one male and one female returning student who have made the best of their opportunities at Great Lakes. For more than thirty years, this award has meant that several families who may not have otherwise afforded an independent Christian education could send their child back to Great Lakes.

We wish we were able to chronicle all of those we have lost since the last publication of a Laker Connection; however, time and space do not allow it. Below, we have tried to highlight those we have lost who served for several years on staff or on the board.
