My sweet daddy used to say, “You never know what a day will bring .” Some-times he would continue talking about some trial he’d had that day with farm equipment, cows that had trouble calving or another trial he’d face on the farm that day . More often though it was about something good he had experienced that day . Daddy was a positive man . He always greeted you with a smile and he had a good attitude . I think a farmer has to have a positive outlook on life . He prepares his land, plants his seed and believes that the rain will come and the sun will shine and his crops will grow .

It is hard sometimes for me to believe that daddy’s been gone from this earth for almost six years . Often I see or do things I wish I could tell him about . Many times I hear Ron say, “Your daddy would have enjoyed this meal” or “Your daddy would have liked to have seen this .” Even though daddy lived to be 87 years of age, it was not long enough . We miss him very much .

The loss of a loved one reminds us how short our time on earth really is . Do we use that time wisely? Most all of us have to work and most of us spend the

With summer break coming to a close, Gus and Sam I Am were winding down the activities and preparing for school . Just before school, our family made a big purchase, a new truck . This was a real delight for Gus . I asked Gus what color he would like, red or white? He re-plied, “Red .” Would you like red or blue? He replied, “Red .” Would you like blue or white? He replied, “Red .” Gus’ choice was obvious and mine was the same, so Chris didn’t get a choice in the matter. He just wanted something dependable and Gus and I got to pick it out. When we finally found what we wanted and brought it home, Gus was the first to test the horn. Looks like the red truck has met Gus’ approval, he loves it .

The first Wednesday in August, the middle school hosted “Hornet Academy” for all the new sixth grad-ers . Gus spent most of the day at school and loved it . This got him pumped about going back to school . He had missed his buddies over the summer and was looking forward to seeing them again .

We made several visits before school to help with Gus’ transition . During open house, we visited his teacher a while and then Gus was attracted to a noise down the hall. Turns out the school resource officer was playing a saxophone in the hallway . Gus headed straight for the sax with Sam I Am right on his heals . The officer immediately stopped playing and said, “Hello Gus!” Of course Gus wanted to play the saxophone, so the offi-cer took Gus in the band room and found a trum-pet for Gus to play . After some coaching by an older student, Gus finally made some noise with it . He had a hard time mak-ing a noise because he was laughing so much . He was so excited to get his hands on an instru-

biggest part of our week at work . Those of us fortunate to have weekends off eagerly look forward to them while thinking about all we need get done and hoping to work in some time to do something we enjoy. We all need a time of rest and relaxation . Day after day, week after week, month after month we have our routines . How often do we really think about the brevity of our life here on earth? It certainly comes to mind when we hear about someone’s death . Recently a young man was killed in a motorcycle accident near our home, so heartbreaking and tragic . I thought about how his life here on earth had been cut so short . I prayed for his loved ones grieving their loss .

Recently this I saw a video on Facebook that really touched me . In the video Francis Chan holds a long white rope . The end of the rope is not visible to the viewers . He asks viewers to imagine the rope goes on forever and ever . He holds one end of the rope in his hand and a very small section of the rope, maybe two-three inches, has red tape wrapped around it . He asked views to imagine the rope is a timeline of their existence . The very small part, wrapped in red tape, represents their time on earth; a few short years on earth . The rest of the rope (that goes out of sight) represents their time in eternity . He goes on to say that for some viewers, all they think about is the red part .

WOW! How true that is . We get so caught up in what is happening in this world with our jobs, our families, our health, our friends, politics, government, etc. We worry and stress over so many things that are fleeting. Yes, we must be responsible people who work and are a benefit to society, but we must keep in mind all this is fleeting, a morning mist that quickly evaporates. The bible says in James 4:14, “Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring . What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes .” ESV

Our life on earth is so limited . I cannot even begin to imagine what eternity will be like . Most everything I experience has an end . Days end, nights end, books end, movies end, meals end, lives here on earth end . Looking at the ocean I can imagine it never ends, but I know it does . Somewhere, long out of my limited sight, it meets land again . Eternity, its hard to grasp . Where will you spend eternity? If you know Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord you can look forward to spending eternity with Him . I look forward to that . As I get older it becomes more real to me each day . Eternity - take some time today to think about where you will spend it . Here is the link to Francis Chan’s video if you’d like to watch . https://www .youtube .com/watch?v=86dsfBbZfWs

ment . Thank goodness he didn’t see the tuba case lying in the back of the room . For those of you who weren’t fol-lowing Gus a couple years ago, he loves to play with his cousins tuba .

I was surprised the resource officer already knew Gus. I’m glad to see the interaction of an officer in the school. Hope-fully this will be a chance to educate Gus, and all the stu-dents, about our law enforcement officers and how impor-tant they are to us . Gus gets excited every morning when he sees Officer Boone and waves at him.

The first week of school was difficult but we are survived. The dog trainers came the first day of school to talk about Sam’s job and how he is to be treated. Gus is testing his new teacher, as he does with everyone who works with him . She has already learned that Gus likes her “one on one” attention and will find interesting ways to get it when need be . She has also talked with the band teacher and volunteer about working with Gus on a trumpet . Hopefully we will find him an instrument soon and he will be headed to band with a trumpet in hand . We may uncover a new talent, or it may just last a few weeks; either way, we like to give Gus opportunities to explore new ideas .

Red Blanton

Note: I still cannot believe they bought a new truck! Red’s older Toyota must have 300,000 or more miles on it! A friend at church who deals in autos, finally talked her into getting a new one, because he knew the new one would have 300,000 or more miles on it before she’d ever get another one . Red invented the word frugal!

THE BACK NINEYou know . . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate . Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went . I know that I lived them all . I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams . But, here it is . . . the back nine of my life and it catches me by surprise . How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that I was only on the first hole and the back nine was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like . But, here it is - my friends are retired and getting gray - they move slower and I see an older person now . Some are in better and some worse shape than me - but I see the great change . Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant - but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and

never thought we'd become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore, it's manda-tory! Cause if I don't of my own free will, I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did! But, at least I know, that though I’m on the back nine, and I'm not sure how long it will last, this I know, that when it's over on this earth, it's over . A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets . There are things I wish I hadn't done, things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done . It's all in a lifetime .

So, if you're not on the back nine yet, let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think . So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly . So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you’re on the back nine or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life . So, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remem-ber and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past! "Life" is a gift to you . The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after . Make it a fantastic one. Live it well! Enjoy today! Do some-thing fun! Be happy! Have a great day! Remember, "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver . Live Happy in 2015!

Lastly consider this:

• Your kids are becoming you, but your grandchil-dren are perfect

• Going out is good, coming home is better!• You forget names, but it's OK because some

people forgot they even knew you!• You realize you're never going to be really good

at anything like golf .• The things you used to care to do, you aren't as

interested in anymore, but you really do care that you aren't as interested .

• You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV 'on' than in bed . It's called "pre-sleep" . You miss the days when everything worked with just an "on" and "off" switch .

• You tend to use more four-letter words . . . "what?" . . ."when?" . . .?

• You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless ."

• What used to be freckles are now liver spots .• Everybody whispers .• You have three sizes of clothes in your closet,

two of which you will never wear .

But old is good in some things: old Songs, old mov-ies, and best of all, old friends! Today is the oldest you’ve ever been and yet the youngest you’ll ever be. So enjoy this day while it lasts. Do not regret growing older . It is a privilege denied to many .”

LIFE AND TIMESNORTH TO ALASKA PART THREELast month I left off traveling through Wind River Range, Wyoming:

Wind River Range led to snow covered moun-tains on Highway 191 at an elevation of 6,000 feet in Farson, Wyoming . There were antelope everywhere and the Wind River Range turned into the High Cold Desert on Highway 191 . We passed a location that was marked part of the Oregon Trail; campsites were available . Rupard and I talked about what it must have been like traveling in a covered wagon pulled by horses over these plains and mountains . It sure would have been rough and slow, but you wouldn’t have missed much scenery traveling at that slow pace .

The next town was Boulder, Wyoming, popu-lation 75 at an elevation of 7,015 feet . We passed under a nice arched bridge used just for cattle, wildlife and equipment to get from one side of the highway to the other . There is regular height fencing on the bridge but on ei-ther side of the highway there is over eight foot high fencing . We saw a herd of mule deer and not far off a herd of domesticated lamas .

The next town is bigger, Pinedale, Wyoming, population 2,030 and an elevation of 7,175 . Just outside of town we saw another cattle and wildlife underpass . These are not cheap bridg-es . They are nice and very attractive . In Wyo-ming they have ravens instead of crows . They look like crows but they are huge, as big as a buzzard .

Approximately 17 miles outside of Pinedale is Daniel, Wyoming, elevation 7,195 . There we

noticed better grasslands and of course sagebrush again . There is a large indoor trout hatchery in Daniel that opened in 1923 . I would have loved to have stopped and fished and then ate what we caught, but we were on a tight schedule for Alaska. There was snow along the shoulders of the road and we saw beautiful quaking aspens trees mixed with Ponderosa pine trees. We came upon a brush fire. It was burning in about four different locations along Highway 191 on the side of a moun-tain. The mountain wasn’t that wooded, just a lot of brush. There were three differ-ent brush fire trucks fighting the fire.

Next we passed through the small town of Bon-durant, Wyoming, population 100 with an eleva-tion 6,611 feet . We passed by Bondurant Ele-mentary School, which looked fairly new . The wildlife fencing along the highway changed to treated round post top rail with posts no more than four to five feet apart and the top rails over-lap each other with woven wire below .

We rode along the Hoback River, which is a fast rushing river . Many years ago trappers made their living trapping along this river . Hoback River spills into Snake River, which we crossed, and runs along US Highway 89 . Snake River is wide, with rushing water and looks deep .

We finally arrived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is the valley floor between the Teton Mountain Range and Snake River . The elevation is 6,500 feet and population is 10,449 . This was a very cool Wild West town . All the sidewalks are wooden planks, even the park that is in the middle of town where the famous Elk Antler Arches are located - four of them . We had reservations across the street from the park in the Miller Park Lodge . It was nice . After checking in - we checked out the town . It is al-ways tough deciding where to eat, so we relied on the Yelp website which is helpful for mak-ing dining decisions . It was not hard to decide where to eat breakfast the next morning . We ate breakfast at McDonalds; it was fast and cheap . Rupard filled his car up with gas and we headed to Grand Teton National Park . We stopped a few miles away for some pictures . It was really beautiful that cold morning with clear blue skies and the sun shining brightly . We purchased our park tickets and entered the park . We saw a few cars around but didn’t see anyone . There were several locations you could drive to without hik-ing so Rupard drove to Jenny Lake, which is just across from the foot of the Tetons . I was very pleased with the pictures we took . The Tetons are 13,770 feet high . The views were breath-taking . God’s wonderful, beautiful creation is “AWESOME!” Jackson Hole Airport is right in front of the Tetons and is the largest airport in Wyoming . That would be a beautiful airport to fly in and out of.

We headed back to town to have lunch and checked out some shops . We went into a hat shop . The shop owner is a nice lady from Fair-banks, Alaska . She showed us hats of all types and price ranges and she knows the hat busi-ness very well . I have always wanted to feel and see a beaver skin hat and they had plenty of them . The prices ranged from $300 to $3,000 . I decided I didn’t wear a hat that often . While walking between shops I noticed a helicopter kept flying around up on one of the ski slopes and it looked like he was logging. While enjoy-ing some Bison Chili for lunch I overheard a lady say she worked for the company that was flying the helicopter . They were installing another ski lift . She said they are one of two companies in the world that install ski lifts; they work all over the world . You can go online and watch what I saw and see how it can look like the helicopter carrying the ski lift poles is logging; Doppel-

SEPTEMBER RECIPEWe had a birthday party for mama and Aunt Clara in August . Mama’s birth-day was in February . She turned 91 . We could not ever find a time for all of us to get together in February for a party . Last year for her 90th Birthday, we had a nice party for her . My Aunt Clara is ma-ma’s roommate now and she turned 96 in August, so we had a “combined birthday party .” It was a lot of fun . Mama and Aunt Clara are very generous ladies . Either of them would give you the shirt off their back, as the say-ing goes . So when they began to “discuss” who’s

birthday card was who’s, it was quite funny . Each would say, “Well this one is mine, it has my name of it .” We had lots of good food to eat . I made two cakes, a coconut pound cake and a Biscoff Buckeye Cake . I really liked the Biscoff Buckeye Cake . Somehow I had a lot more glaze than the picture I saw online had, maybe I didn’t let it cool long enough . It covered the entire cake, but it sure was good! I got the recipe off Pinterest . It was submitted by “I Am Baker .” It’s a little time consuming to make, but well worth it . Biscoff is a spread made with Biscoff cookies . I found it on the peanut butter aisle .

Biscoff Buckeye CakeIngredients

Cake • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar • 1 cup buttermilk • 3 eggs • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Filling • 1 cup butter, softened • 1/2 cup Creamy Biscoff Spread • 4 cups powered sugar, divided • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or milk) • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Glaze • 14-ounces sweetened condensed milk • 1 cup dark chocolate • 3 tablespoons Creamy Biscoff Spread • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions

Cake 1 . Heat oven to 350 degrees F . Spray two 9-inch

round cake pans with nonstick cooking spray . 2 . Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking pow-

der, baking soda and salt in medium bowl . Set aside .

3 . In a large bowl using a handheld miser or stand mixer with paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy and lighter in
