Beachcombing & Metal Detecting

How to buy a detector and where to use it

Page 2: Beachcombing & Metal Detecting

Getting Started

• With precious metal prices at their current levels, it’s possible for beach combing and metal detecting to be profitable hobbies.

• In order to be successful, you’ll need to know which metal detector to use, and where to use it.

Selecting a Metal Detector

• Most metal detectors don’t vary much in terms of performance. When comparing metal detectors, take these three things into account:

• Comfort Level• Search Environment• Cost

Comfort Features

• Comfort and ergonomics are some of the main differences between metal detector models. • Since beachcombing is a physically demanding

activity, make sure to consider the following features before buying a metal detector:• Grip type• Weight• Wrist straps • Hip attachments

Specializing in Search Areas• Some metal detectors are specifically built to work in certain

environments. If you know you will only be searching in one type of area, a specialized model might be a good idea.

Beach-based metal detectors usually come with waterproof design to search in shallow water.

Field-based metal detectors often have better ground balancing controls.

Cost Evaluation

• Although you may find jewelry, coins, or other valuables, it could be a long time before your metal detector begins to “pay for itself,” if ever.

• Research prices for the models your are interested and avoid features that you don’t think you’ll need.

• You can always upgrade your metal detector later, if you become fully immersed in the hobby.

Searching at the Beach

• Beaches can be divided into two search areas: dry sand and shallow surf.

• Jewelry and other valuables are more likely to be found in the shallow surf where the waves have knocked them off other beachgoers.

• The dry sand usually contains coins and miscellaneous items that people forgot to pack before leaving the beach.

Searching in Fields

• A field should always be researched before using a metal detector there.

• Former campsites, trade routes, or other historically significant areas have the best chance of hiding precious metals or other artifacts.

• Fields that lack history, but still attract a lot of foot traffic, such as parks and campgrounds, are also good places to search.

What to Do with Your Finds

• Many metal detecting enthusiasts enjoy researching the history of the objects they find and displaying noteworthy items.

• If you find old coins or jewelry, you may be able to sell your finding to local pawnbrokers or a precious metal refiner. • If you do, you can have an exciting hobby that pays for

itself!
