Wednesday October 12, 2016 From Sue Science Open Afternoon: Tuesday 18 October Parents are warmly invited to attend the open afternoon focusing on science next Tuesday 18 October after lunch. Commencing at 2pm parents can expect to see children involved and engaged in experimenting, observing, questioning, exploring, considering, hypothesising, testing, estimating and concluding. We rather hope that this will also be great fun. Science is a subject that most children enjoy and look forward to because it is ‘hands on’, the outcomes can be quite unpredictable and some of ‘the learning is in the doing’. We plan to have some cross age activities and experiments happening with Year 6s working with the preps, and the Year 5s working with the Year 1s. The year 2s are making some marble runs which will draw on Newton’s First Law of Motion: An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. The Year 3s will be showcasing some chemical science experiments that they have conducted throughout Term 3 as part of their inquiry unit. They initially explored the Periodic Table to develop an understanding of gases, common liquids and solids and how they may interact with each other when combined. The Year 4s will be exploring the notion of ‘What is my Footprint?’ We will conclude the afternoon with an assembly at 3pm; again focusing on science. Some of the children from various grades will be sharing their thoughts and conclusions from the afternoon’s activities and experiments. Organisation for 2017 Detailed organisation and preparation is well underway for the 2017 school year. The teaching staff will be finalised over the next few days. The grade structure will include 32 grades with the following combination: 5 classes at Foundation 5 classes at Year 1 5 classes at Year 2 5 classes at Year 3 5 classes at Year 4 7 classes at Year 5 and 6. Science Open Afternoon: Tuesday 18 October Parents are warmly invited to attend the open afternoon focusing on science next Tuesday 18 October after lunch. The year 2s are making some marble runs which will draw on Newton’s First Law of Motion:

An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

The grade structure will include 32 grades with the following combination:

5 classes at Foundation 5 classes at Year 1 5 classes at Year 2 5 classes at Year 3 5 classes at Year 4 7 classes at Year 5 and 6.

We plan to survey the children in years, 4, 5 and 6, the teachers, education support staff and parents to seek their opinions on the composite classes for the senior school. The survey will developed and distributed shortly and we welcome the feedback from all community members. We created a boys’ only class at Foundation this year because of the pronounced predominance of boys. Unless we have an unexpected exodus of boys from our current Foundation level, we will be having another boys’ only class at Year 1 in 2017. Parents of current Foundation boys will receive an email shortly providing an opportunity for them to opt in or out of the class for 2017. If any parents would like to discuss this matter in person, I am happy to make the time, please contact the office to arrange an appointment. Classroom spaces for 2017 are also being carefully considered at the moment. We will have two extra grades, both in Year 4. We intend to take a creative approach to the classroom spaces next year to avoid having to receive an additional Mod 5 classroom which would encroach on valuable play space. Later in 2017, we will receive a Mod 10 classroom which is a two storey building housing four classrooms; this will involve replacing one of our existing Mod 5 buildings housing two classrooms. The benefit for our school in waiting a few months is that we will not lose any play space. School Fees for 2017 Notices regarding school fees for 2017 will be distributed today or tomorrow to all families. Parents will have 6 weeks to pay; fees are due on Wednesday 23 November, 2016. We are requesting payment this year which will ensure a smooth start administratively to the 2017 school year. Many grades have sporting activities, special programs or excursions commencing early in February; prompt payment simply takes the pressure off families and the administrative staff and ensures all children can participate in the full range of learning activities. We have requested parents to make a voluntary contribution and or make a payment to the Building Fund. The Voluntary Contribution covers: ICT infrastructure, replacement of musical instruments, art supplies, sporting equiment, library resources and grounds development including refurbishment of the main toilets. The Building Fund covers the redevelopment of the children’s toilets in the main building. The refurbishment of the toilets project will be costing in excess of $100,000; we have collected two quotations at the moment and are awaiting the final one. The work will be conducted during the Christmas vacation period. Payment plans can be established if required, please make contact with the Business Manager, Nicole St Leon for further details. Master Plan for the Buildings and Grounds We have an architect coming to our school on Tuesday 25 October to conduct some workshops on the development of our Master Plan for our school. The workshops will conducted throughout the day and will include children, staff and parents. If you have an interest in the development of our facilities we would love to hear from you. We are keen to gather ideas, suggestions and concepts to create the best possible learning environment for our children. The parent session will be conducted from 3.30 to 4.30pm. More details will be sent home soon. Lion’s Club International Peace Poster Prize Winners Students in Year 5 and 6 have spent many weeks creating posters with the theme ‘A Celebration of Peace’. During a very busy Term 3, in between production rehearsals, about 60 posters were finished to a very high standard. The judging was challenging and it was difficult to decide on just one winner. The entries are judged on artistic skill, originality and a well thought out representation of the message - A Celebration of Peace.

Highly commended are Asher Thomas 5/6F, Red Tingle and Grace Ikin from 5/6A, Wattles. The winner for Hampton PS is Ruby Wilson from 5/6A, Wattles! The standard of the art work and the creative talents on show below are very impressive indeed. Congratulations Ruby, Asher and Grace! You can see their amazing posters on display at the newsagent in Hampton Street from next week. For more news from the art room go to the art blog: http://arthampton.global2.vic.edu.au/

Sporting Excellence Congratulations go to Lisa Logue, class teacher of Foundation E, Ghost Gums and Leading Teacher who successfully completed the Around the Bay event of 210 kilometres on Sunday in very blustery and demanding conditions in a time of 9 hours and 24 minutes! Lisa rode with her father Chris and husband Jamie and all three crossed the line together. This is the longest ride I have completed in a long time. It took much longer than I anticipated due to the wind. The scariest part was coming down Olivers

Hill; again the wind making it difficult to control the bike. There were so many inspirational people around us, you couldn’t possibly give up!

Congratulations go to Killian Greenan, Jessica Hart in 4B, Melaleucas, Amelie Glendenning in 4C, Banksias who competed together in this special event riding 20 kilometres from the Alexandra Gardens to Elwood and return. The wind was particularly strong and challenging on their return leg. They finished in 2 hours and 49 minutes crossing the line together. Well done Killian, Jessica and Amelie!

We felt really proud to have finished the distance. It was good fun although a little strenuous! Our bottoms were a bit sore, but we would definitely do it again! Killian, Jessica and Amelie Touch Football Congratulations go to Tayla Jones in 5/6G, Jarrahs, and Lara Smith in 5/6A, Wattles who have recently been selected in the School Sport Victoria Under 12 team in touch football to compete in the National Championships in Mandurah in Western Australia. The girls will train for a few days prior to the 4 day competition period in late October. The girls are currently training with the state squad fairly intensively each week. Divisional Athletics Championships I extend my congratulations to the 33 children who competed in the divisional athletics championships last Wednesday. All entrants finished in either first or second place at the district level. Typically there is pronounced difference in standards between district and divisional events. All students showed great endeavour and a positive approach. Once again competitors needed to finish in either first or second place to qualify for the next level which is the regional championships to be conducted tomorrow.

My best wishes go to the children shown below who excelled at the divisional level and will be no doubt approaching the competition tomorrow with excitement and optimism. Sincere thanks go to Rob and Paul for their commitment to encouraging all children to master skills and aspire to do their very best on the sporting field. 9/10 boys 1500m Mitch Tuffley 5m 50 sec 2

Assembly Thanks go to FA, Snappy Gums who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday. Our musical item featured Christian Beare from 4C, Banksias who played his own composition on keyboard. This was an un-named piece and Christian demonstrated musical skill well beyond his years! The piece was a clever composition with changes in dynamics and tempo throughout. It even showed 'form' in the A B A design of the piece. Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received an academic excellence award at assembly yesterday: Bodie John from FB, Yellow Gums for demonstrating an enthusiastic and creative approach to

many school tasks and producing excellent results in reading and speaking and listening. Jenson Gumbleton from FB, Yellow Gums for demonstrating a confident and capable

approach with speaking and listening and in Mathematics Tommy Edwards from FB, Yellow Gums for demonstrating commendable progress and

achievement in reading and Mathematics - particularly in number.
