About HollandHolland or the Netherlands? Referring to the same country,
both names have been used interchangeably throughout history.
For centuries, Holland has been known for its international
orientation and open-minded culture. Its ties to other parts of
the world have brought many internationals to settle in Holland,
bringing their own ideas and cultures.
Even though the Dutch are the best non-native English speakers
in the world, you may want to learn some Dutch. You also might
be surprised to learn how many Dutch words have been borrowed
by other languages. The Dutch word baas (boss), can be traced
back in 57 languages spread over all continents and is therefore
the most widely adopted Dutch word. Here are some short
phrases to get you started:
Hello Hallo/hoiWhat’s your name? Hoe heet je?I am … Ik ben ...How are you doing? Hoe gaat het met je?I am fine Het gaat goed met mij Bye Doei

Admission requirementsContact the Dutch institution offering the programme of your
choice for information about admission requirements. Generally,
the main requirement for admission to a bachelor’s programme
is a secondary-school diploma at the appropriate level. For admission
to a master’s degree programme, applicants must have at least a
bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject or its equivalent. IELTS and
TOEFL are commonly accepted language tests. If you meet the
requirements, follow the institution’s procedure for admission.
Quality assuranceStudents are awarded recognised degrees only after completing
an accredited degree programme. The higher education accreditation
system aims to guarantee that study programmes meet the highest
standards. Bachelor’s and master’s programmes that meet a specific
set of criteria are accredited (i.e. officially recognised) by the NVAO
(the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders).
Dutch higher education institutions sign the Code of Conduct, which
provides international students with a guarantee of the quality of
their programmes and of their student recruitment, admission and
counselling procedures. Only institutions that have signed the Code
are allowed to recruit international students. All institutions whose
study programmes are listed at www.studyfinder.nl have signed the
Code of Conduct.
Programmes and degreesHolland offers a large variety of study programmes in different

Bachelor’s or Master’s degreeIf you enrol in a higher education programme in Holland, you
will obtain a bachelor’s degree after finishing the undergraduate
phase, and a master’s degree after finishing the graduate phase.
Research universities and universities of applied sciences award
both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
PhDPhD degrees are only offered by research universities.
In Holland a PhD is not regarded as study, but as serious research
and PhD candidates are often in paid employment.

Dutch higher education systemHolland has two main types of higher education institutions:
universities of applied sciences and research universities.

institutes for international education. You can find all
English-taught programmes at www.studyfinder.nl.
Universities of applied sciencesProgrammes offered by universities of applied sciences
(in Dutch: hogescholen) focus on the practical application of
knowledge, preparing students for specific professions and
applied research. Holland has 37 government-funded
universities of applied sciences.
Research universities There are 14 government-funded research universities in
Holland. These institutions train students in academic study
and research, although many study programmes also have a
professional component.
