While some Octobers mark the

first frost of the winter to fol-

low,

within days this month re-

bounds

with warm, near-summerlike

weather. It’s during these late-

summer

days that farmers rush

to harvest the last of their

crops.

The ancient Romans celebrated

this harvest season with

fes"vals throughout the month.

October, with its beau"fully

changing foliage, is also one of

the most colorful months of the

year. Deciduous trees provide

vibrant color, with leaves that

change color before falling to

the ground in a carpet of yel-

low,

brown, orange, and fading reds.

� Sugar Maple (red or yel-

� Sassafras (bright yellow)

� Oak (red, brown, or rus-

set)

� Ash (look for yellow or

purplish yellow)

Following September’s

harvest

moon, October’s full

moon is

called the hunter’s moon.

And

this year, on October 27, it

is accompanied by a total

lunar eclipse. The eclipse

is fully visible from

western

North America and

par"ally

visible elsewhere,

according

to The Old Farmer’s

Almanac.

It lasts un"l the moon

sinks below

the horizon.

Flower of the Month – Calendula

The flower for October is the calendula, also known as the pot

marigold. The

calendula (pronounced kəәˈ len dyəә ləә) is cousin to the daisy

and the common

marigold. But, unlike the pungent marigold used to repel garden

pests, the

pot marigold’s tangy, peppery flavor has become known as the

“poor man’s

saffron.” Its petals can be used as an edible colorant in pots of

soup, pasta,

rice, meat, scrambled eggs, spreads, and salads.

The calendula blooms in vibrant oranges and yellows and subtle

pinks and

creams. Its name stems from the La"n word kalendae, which

means “first day of the month.”

These sun-loving flowers can almost always be

found in bloom during late summer and fall.
