Designed for people— Before a design brief even hits his desk, Rob Nguyen is on the hunt. Boutique’s Senior Designer dives into research on a daily basis, unearthing inspiration and innovation in some unexpected places—from printed journals to design blogs, even the latest phone apps.– Rob’s passion for residential design began when he was studying architecture at the University of Melbourne. During the course, he noticed a lack of interest by the architectural community towards the new home industry. – The architecture that inspired him —Frank Lloyd Wright’s materiality and form, Mies van der Rohe’s refined details and many current architects’ control of proportions —seemed to be offered only as, what he describes, ‘a luxury service’ accessible to very few. The new home market on the other hand was seen as quite separate—available to many, but rarely receiving the attention to quality and detail that had drawn Rob to architecture to begin with.–

‘It was an opportunity,’ Rob explains. ‘You could either ignore what was happening in home building, or you could get involved and try to improve it. It’s great working on projects that are helping to raise the quality of design for new homes —making architecture accessible to a much wider audience.’–After graduating and working at architectural practices, Rob moved into the new home market, spending several years in design roles, before finding his current position at Boutique, where he has headed the designs for the last three years. ‘It’s a perfect fit for me. We’re building houses that the industry hasn't seen before, challenging the status quo and re-shaping the image of new homes in Melbourne,’ he says. ‘That’s an exciting thing.’–

His design process begins with a concept drawing. It’s a rough sketch that puts inspiration to paper—grouping areas in a floor plan that integrate functionality, light and volume, or arranging elements on a facade with careful consideration for proportions and materiality. Then, together with a team of design drafts people, Rob refines the plan, elevations and internals, resolving details that bring a sense of high-end design to the everyday home. His work continues when display construction begins—from inspecting the timber frame to checking the installation of claddings, cabinetry and final detailing on completion.– Through it all, Rob retains a passion for bringing high quality architectural design to the new home market.—

— Since arriving from England in 1991, interior designer Mitra Whittle has honed her craft in hundreds of homes, running her own business for 16 years before joining Boutique on an exclusive basis in 2006. –Her training began in Europe with an honours degree in design—but, as she explains, her work is always evolving. ‘I get my inspiration from everywhere really. From people, from fashion, and also from what comes through in wallpaper books, in fabrics. I’m constantly in touch with suppliers and wholesalers, who bring the latest products from overseas.’–As Boutique’s senior interior designer, Mitra works on every home that customers visit as part of their own research process. It’s a professional focus which, over the years, has revealed much about the ebb and flow of trends. For people who are diving into the challenge of designing interiors for their own homes, Mitra’s advice is to steer clear of fads. ‘I try not to be very much trend driven,’ she explains, ‘I’m quite wary of overdoing it!’ — While choosing furniture, colour palettes and decorative elements is arguably the most exciting stage of any build process, longevity should be a big consideration. The major elements of each room will be with you for many years—so Mitra’s advice is to customise the flexible pieces.—

‘What sets a home apart is how you detail it,’ she explains. ‘And choosing feature walls is a big part of this process.’ Mitra’s interior concepts often begin with accent colours—and Boutique opens this same process up to buyers, who can work with colour consultants to navigate the almost endless palette options for walls, work surfaces, cabinetry and finishes. ‘These accents can be very much customised,’ Mitra explains, but they’re also quite intricately linked to other decisions, ‘from choosing the right fabrics to the right feature elements.’—Ultimately your home should reflect your personality, and achieving a unique look needn’t involve reinventing the wheel. Drawing on decades of experience with a range of clients, Mitra recommends choosing a time- tested style that can work as a base for an overall design. ‘The eclectic look is enduring,’ she says, because it involves adding personal elements to a clean, ambient base. And, of course, the objects and wall treatments you add ‘can easily be modified to the fashion of the day.’ Similarly, she appreciates the French Provincial look as a simple, raw canvas: ‘You can accent it with warmer tones and colours or you can cool it down with industrial finishes.’—

Throughout any home, fabrics are a really flexible way of adding personality—and not just with visitors in mind. From linens to rugs, Mitra admits, ‘conceptualising the bedrooms is one of my favourite parts!’ More broadly, she’s fascinated with the way our living spaces are evolving. ‘As blocks are getting smaller, nowadays you don’t have rooms that are only used when you’ve got guests. You’ll see two living areas as opposed to a traditional formal dining room divided from the living space.’—This shift towards informality and casual entertaining has also brought with it a changing approach to garden design. In short, as Mitra explains, it’s become about ‘being able to use the external part of the house’ as an extension of your living space. The secret is treating the outdoor area as a crossover. Mitra’s tip is to connect with the natural surroundings as much as possible—‘I don’t want it to feel closed off to the extent that it no longer feels like part of the garden.’—As with every interior design project, Mitra says, ‘it’s really a matter of individual taste.’ And that’s the fun part.—
