High in the Andean mountains lies an ancient city that had been lost for hundreds of years. Mysteriously abandoned in the 16th century, it remained a secret from the Spanish conquerors, and it seemed as though it was destined to remain shrouded in mist, forgotten to the world forever. But it was biding its time, waiting… until in 1911 it was discovered once again, and the world’s love affair with the ancient Inca wonder began. The ancient citadel was a centre for worship, astronomy observation and a retreat for the Inca royalty. Nestled high in a cloud forest at the end of an ancient mountainous pathway leading from UNESCO World Heritage Centre Cusco, it is the one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites on earth. What more does one need to fire the imagination and spirit of adventure in every human being?Transport yourself to a different setting. In a desert plain south of Lima there rests over 300 vast geometric figures and drawings of mammals, insects and deities each spanning between 50 and 1200 feet in length. These are the Nazca Lines, one of the world’s greatest enigmas in purpose and even date of creation (thousands of years to be sure). It is yet another example in our world of how incredible human races of the past were, leaving legacies that cannot be matched today in raw beauty and their ability to evoke astonishment and reverence simultaneously.Lima is the capital of Peru, and one of the most culturally rich and vibrant places in South America. A melting pot of ancient traditions and evolved culture, a mix of textures and colour found in the buildings and on the streets, and a famed gastronomic culture, makes Lima a city well worth exploring. Lima is a chaotic and sophisticated blend of experience. Cusco, the ancient Incan capital will give travellers the authentic Peruvian experience. Wander through the striking network of cobbled paths and discover the grand churches, temples and architecture that were once at the heart of the Incan Empirial city. Cusco is also well known for its vibrant night life and dining culture, so an overnight trip to the city is a must. Immerse yourself in the historical landscape of the ancient Inca cities, with a trek to Machu Picchu, a magnificent stone complex built by the Incas in 1450. The ancient city ruins are built along the mountain ridges in Cusco Region and offer travellers an awe-inspiring and incredible experience. Here, history, art, culture and nature are at one’s fingertips. A blend of the old and the new, the ancient and the mysterious, Peru has the ability to transport you to a world unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.

Cuba is a Caribbean island filled with rustic hidden towns, UNESCO World Heritage sites and the world’s finest cigars. The culturally diverse island welcomes visitors to tranquil beaches, exudes musical energy and is adorned with magnificent architecture. Even today few tourists flock to the island, making it an enchanting destination for a unique and authentic experience. Havana transports visitors into a time stood still. It is a city traced with vibrant coloured buildings that echo different historical epochs, from the Spanish colonial era to Neoclassic and Art Nouveau. Cuban cigars are regarded as possessing the finest quality craftsmanship globally. The Vuelta Abajo region in Cuba’s west is known to produce the world’s finest tobacco. Get behind the scenes of how the rare cigars are made by visiting a tobacco factory. A popular area is the Pinar Del Rio, a two-hour drive from Havana. Another fascinating and unique Cuban creation is its rum. Partly due to the region’s rich fertile soil and weather conditions, Cuba’s production of sugar cane – the source ingredient for rum – is one of the world’s finest, and produces some of the crispest rum. Have a taster on the rocks, or try one of the best mojitos you will ever have. A real joy of exploring the streets of Havana is not just meandering through the markets, shops and food vendors, but also listening to the soft musical breeze of locals playing instruments. The streets also also a living museum, lined with 1950s American style cars in perfect condition. Visitors have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of these vehicles to fully experience the vibrant scene. Cuba is also home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Highlights include the archaeological site of 19th century coffee plantations located in the southeast, the historic centre of Camagüey founded by the Spaniards in 1528, and the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, home to one of the most biologically diverse sites on the planet. The architectural brilliance of Trinidad and the Valle de los Ingenios is also worth a visit. Founded in honour of the Holy Trinity in 16th century, the city was of significance during the booming sugar industry during 18th and 19th century. For adrenalin kicking activities, travellers should travel to the resort town of Varadero, for snorkeling and diving down into the marine environments, or bathing on beaches and cave exploring on land. For low-key action, try a salsa class, or dance the night away in the many live music venues and bars that sweep through Cuban towns. The time to go is now. To get the real experience of Cuban culture, people and hospitality, now is the time to start planning your visit.

Known as The Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is one of the most diverse landmasses in the world, having been formed by eruptions a mere 18 million years ago and since shaped by the relentless forces of Mother Nature. It is a land of raw contrast, home to both glaciers and volcanoes, to days of endless light in the summer time and a blanket of darkness in the winter. Iceland’s isolation and extreme climate has created a unique society and culture that is strongly rooted in custom and tradition. With a population of just over 330,000, the awe-inspiring nature and epic landscapes remain for the most part, untouched. Known for its Viking history, the Snaefellsjokull National Park is a wonder to be explored, where glacier lagoons and cascading waterfalls can be admired. For a more challenging trek, hike the remote Hornstrandir landscape and be taken up high mountain peaks and admire seas of fluffy clouds. Also popular for hiking and biking is the lavender meadows of Skaftafell National Park, and Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, that is home to Europe’s most powerful and captivating waterfall, Dettifoss. Step off land, and explore the seas, by floating in the sapphire clear water between the rift that separates the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America at Silfra, or, go searching for and get up close to wild minke and humpback whales. In the southwest of Iceland, trvellers can find Gullfoss, a spectacular waterfall in the untouched beauty of the Hvita’s canyon. Witness the Aurora Borealis light up the night sky as they dance for over eight months of the year (August – April) in the northern country. Destinations to go hunting for the lights are in the Westfjords region, and the geothermal ranges of Landmannalaugar. If you are sticking closer to the capital, the Northern Lights can still be seen in Reykjavik. Take a 15-minute drive to Bessastaoir in Alftanes town, and there you will find a large a bay. Here, the view of the lights is mesmerizing, and has a magical reflection in the sea. Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland is a charming and culture rich city. Wander along the harbour front and take in the contrasting landscapes of the colourful historic buildings to one side, and the sweeping views of Lake Tjörnin with the backdrop of mountain peaks. Visit the Viking maritime museum to hear the stories of the Iceland’s maritime past, climb the tower at Hallgrimskirkja - the city’s well known church, and immerse yourself in on of the many bubbling thermal baths. For a quintessential Icelandic experience, bathe in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon for the ultimate relaxation experience with stunning scenic surroundings.

LAKE TAHOE

Formed approximately two million years ago, Lake Tahoe is the crown jewel of the Sierra. Located at 1897m above sea level on the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America; deep and wide, bluer than blue and surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world.

This natural treasure offers the ultimate high-country experience with superb outdoor recreation and magnificent scenery throughout the year. The beautiful Emerald Bay is one of the most photographed locations in the world. With massive granite peaks as the backdrop, the scenery is unparalleled. With an abundance of natural beauty Lake Tahoe is the ultimate ‘American lake experience’, home to amazing outdoor activities, unique to each season, a diverse nightlight and accommodation to suit all adventurers.

With an average of 300 days of sunshine each and every year, it is always a good time to visit Lake Tahoe. With beaches, ski resorts, hundreds of kilometres of biking trails, several communities, and a growing number of nationally recognized events, Lake Tahoe is truly America’s year round playground.

WINTER IN NORTH LAKE TAHOE

California boasts the longest ski season in the USA, with the first resorts in North Lake Tahoe opening at the end of October. The remaining resorts open in November and December, with the season lasting well into May and June.

Straddling the California-Nevada border, the bucket list destination of North Lake Tahoe lays claim to some of the country’s top alpine resorts, including Squaw Valley, Northstar California and Alpine, the sister mountain to Squaw. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows resort was recently voted by USA Today and 10Best as the Best Ski Resort in North America for the second year running. MAMMOTH LAKES

A ‘hidden gem’ in California, Mammoth Lakes is majestic in scale and awesome in its natural beauty. Located in the heart of the breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains, scenic Mammoth Lakes is only a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and Southern California.

The year-round adventureland of Mammoth Lakes is one of those rare places that you have to see to still not totally believe. The name speaks to the size of the mountains, the expanse of the valleys, the incredible number of crystal clear mountain lakes and the endless opportunities for adventure just outside your door. But what makes this place really unique are the surreal storybook scenes that drop jaws, spark the imagination and make every moment feel like a brush with the truly incredible.

Adventure is available year-round in Mammoth Lakes. In fact, there is a lot of debate about which season is best. During winter you can ski and snowboard Mammoth Mountain or take off into the wilderness on your cross country skis. When spring hits, you can ski and also celebrate the fishing opener in the same day. The summer melts away the snow, opening roads to Devils Postpile National Monument, 101-foot Rainbow Falls and the gateway to Yosemite National Park.

SUMMER IN MAMMOTH LAKES

If you love to put the great in great outdoors, then you’ll find plenty of epic adventures and beautiful scenery during the summer months in Mammoth Lakes. You can enjoy everything from heart-pounding mountain bike rides to fly fishing on peaceful lakes and streams, or a wilderness camping trip to a pleasant afternoon hike. Visit Bodie, a mining ghost town providing fun for the whole family or hike the epic Mammoth Mountain, which is also the highest ski resort in California.

The area is also really interesting geologically: it is situated at the edge of one of the earth’s largest volcanic calderas—second in North America only to Yellowstone—the landscape abounds with spectacular world-class geological features: granite domes, craters, fissures, lava tubes, symmetrical columns of basalt, saline lakes, outcroppings of white quartz and pure black obsidian, warm creeks and natural hot springs pools.

Many sites are only accessible during the warmer months as they are ‘snowed in’ from late November to mid June, making summer the perfect time to explore.

HOW TO GET THERE

Nothing beats the freedom of the open highway and a road trip to Mammoth Lakes from Southern California takes travellers from the cactus-studded

landscape of the Mojave Desert into the broad Owens Valley. Flanked by some of North America’s most impressive mountains and lined with ancient glacial lake beds, it’s easy to see why U.S. Highway 395 is considered a Scenic Byway as it passes through this geologically diverse wonderland. Once out of the city, the traffic density dwindles and you’re able to revel in the region’s impressive natural beauty.

In the 1930’s when Mammoth Lakes was just beginning to gain notoriety as a tourist destination, the drive from L.A. could take up to 3 days. Today the drive takes only 5 to 6 hours, depending on travel conditions. Alternatively, for speed and convenience, nothing beats flying into the Mammoth Lakes/Yosemite Airport which is a short hour long flight from Los Angeles.

A MAJESTIC WONDER IN ALL FOUR SEASONS

Located in the majestic Sierra Nevada of California, Yosemite National Park in Mariposa County is home to some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, massive granite formations and oldest forests. Open year-round and easily accessible, Yosemite is a must-see or any visitor touring California of America’s National Parks.

Winter in Yosemite is an almost mystical experience. The serene blanketed landscape is punctuated by the sights and sounds of visitors having a great time in this winter wonderland. Some enjoy skiing downhill at Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Area. Others take on the trails cross-country style or snowshoe through the giant sequoia groves. And after a day of tubing or ice skating, nothing beats warming up next to a roaring campfire. Winter is also a time to enjoy greater availability and lodging deals.

Spring is, simply put, a must-see. As winter recedes, the park comes to life in dramatic fashion. Rushing waterfalls are at their peak, and butterflies alight on blooming wildflowers everywhere. Spring is the best time for waterfall viewing and the only time for activities such as white water rafting and wildflower viewing.

Visitors can still take advantage of winter conditions at higher elevations or enjoy the warmth of the sun in the low-lying

areas. For the best springtime wildflowers take Highway 140 to Hite Cove in El Portal for an explosion of poppies and lupines.

Summer is the most popular season so plan ahead to avoid congestion. The majority of the park’s four million annual visitors come in summer so if this is the time for your visit – plan accordingly. Leave early in the morning to enter the park, prepare for long lines and use public transit whenever possible. Also plan to visit less explored parts of the park such as Tuolumne Meadows to take advantage of the best views without having to experience the crowds in the Valley floor.

Autumn brings a veritable fireworks display of red, orange and yellow leaves. It’s so breathtaking it brings out the amateur photographer in many visitors. Days are generally mild and this is a great time for hiking or biking around the floor.

Since Tioga Pass is generally open until the end of October, this is actually a great season to hike the entire park before the winter snows come and without the crowds of summer.

Bring layers of clothing, since on any given day, temperatures vary with the elevation and hour.

Whatever the season, there’s plenty of exciting things to see and do in Yosemite Mariposa County.

CALIFORNIA BEGINS HERE

Your visit to Sacramento, California, can begin with food because you will be in America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital; it can begin with history because the Gold Rush and California beginnings started here; or it can begin with nature because rivers, trails and park wind through the city for your recreation and admiration. Sacramento begins with you.

Sacramento is America’s Farm to Fork Capital. No other major city in America is more centrally located amid such a diverse range of high-quality farms, ranches and vineyards. Award-winning chefs and restaurants provide the perfect complement.

Old Sacramento is a 28-acre historic riverfront district with more than 125 boutique shops, restaurants and attractions. The State Capitol and the accompanying Capitol Park is alive with California’s colourful political past and historic achievements. Sutter’s Fort is the last remaining structure from the days before the Gold Rush.

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is the original site where gold was discovered and can still be found.

SACRAMENTO

FOOD, WINE AND FUN

The region is home to one of California’s oldest wine-producing areas. There are over 200 wineries in the region and most offer free tastings and intimate access to the wine making process and the winemakers.

Cool without the pretence - that’s Downtown and Midtown Sacramento where the city’s main theatres, art galleries, cultural venues, plus boutique shops and entertainment venues live.

Surrounding farmers and growers keep Sacramento restaurants serving up the freshest ingredients via creative menus. After dinner, take a walk downtown where you’ll find mermaids and mermen, wine bars, mechanical bulls. Your choice.

OUTDOOR RECREATION AND THE DELTA

The American River Parkway is a biking/walking trail surrounded by natural, protected habitats, scenic bridges, acres of parks, fishing spots, kayaking and tubing areas. White water rapids of every class are just minutes from Sacramento.

The Delta is home to thousands of miles of popular boating and recreation areas. It is also home to hundreds of species of birds, fish and other wildlife.

NEARBY PLACES

Famous Highway 49 lies only 45 minutes outside of Sacramento where picturesque scenic Gold Rush-era towns and cities can be found. Many mix their heritage of both gold and agriculture, with scenic wineries, shopping areas and farm-to-fork restaurants.

Sacramento’s central location puts you within one to a few hours’ drive to several renowned attractions from the ski and recreation areas of Lake Tahoe, the granite domes of Yosemite, and the golden gates of San Francisco.

Most people associate Sonoma County with wine, and rightly so, as it’s the birthplace of California’s commercial wine industry. But with just six per cent of Sonoma County’s one million acres planted with grapes, there are so many other sites and stories to discover.

Situated about an hour’s drive north of San Francisco, Sonoma County spans from the rugged Pacific Coast across picturesque forests and patchworks of farmlands to border Napa County to its east. Its 4,500 square kilometres are divided into three distinct regions: the coast and sea villages, the rivers and redwoods, and the valleys and vineyards – each offering something for everyone.

THE COAST AND SEA VILLAGES

Exploring the 80-odd kilometres of the scenic Pacific Coast Highway that forms Sonoma County’s western border is an experience that will take your breath away. Embark on an iconic California road trip and witness the beauty of stunning sandy beaches, craggy cliffs that drop dramatically into swirling waters, and sea lions and otters sunning themselves on rocks.

REDWOODS AND RIVERS

Just a few miles inland from the coast, you’ll find the majestic beauty of Sonoma County’s redwood forests. Coastal redwoods are among the tallest and oldest living things in the world, with

some towering over 110 metres and being as old as 2,000 years. A drive along the twists and turns of the Bohemian Highway will immerse you in their wonder, but these remarkable giants are best experienced out of the car. Nature reserves offer a range of walking tracks and bicycle trails to suit everyone. Thrill seekers can even fly through the trees on a series of zip lines.

VALLEYS AND VINEYARDS

Heading east from the forests you’ll find the farmlands and vineyards where over 425 Sonoma County wineries, many of which are family-owned, are spread throughout 17 American Viticultural Areas, including Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. Sonoma County is home to noted producers such as Kosta Brown, Merry Edwards and Francis Ford Coppola (yes, the famed movie director) producing a range of varietals.

Pinot Noir and Zinfandel are the most prominent varietals in this region, but Sonoma County also produces exceptional Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

Visitors can enjoy a plethora of themed tours – sip award-winning wines with a local winemaker, taste wine straight from the barrel inside a wine cave, or soak in the scenery with a mountaintop wine tasting. You can peruse the tasting rooms

at the historic Sonoma Plaza or expand your beverage knowledge by embracing new and exciting flavours at a number of local distilleries and microbreweries.

With great wine comes great food! Sonoma County is an amazing dining destination, with everything from cheap and cheerful eats to Michelin-starred restaurants. Discover Sonoma County’s famed Cheese Trail or browse the stalls at any number of local farmers’ markets brimming with organic produce. You’ll never go hungry (or thirsty) in Sonoma County.

San Diego, California’s beach city is located less than two hours from Los Angeles and combines laid-back beach vibes with an urban, metropolitan downtown and dozens of quirky neighbourhoods. With its postcard-perfect weather – averaging 22 degrees year-round – sunny San Diego is the perfect escape for Aussies looking for a quintessential SoCal experience.

FUN FOR THE FAMILY

San Diego is famous the world over for its San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND California Resort and splash-tastic SeaWorld San Diego, but has so much more on offer to thrill both little and big kids in the family. From paddling San Diego’s calm coastal waters to treasure hunting for pirates to travelling back in time at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, it’s no surprise San Diego is consistently rated one of the top family destinations in the USA.

Better still, the month of October is “Kids Free San Diego”, whereby more than 110 San Diego hotels, restaurants, attractions and museums offer families and children special deals, so they can enjoy San Diego on a shoestring budget. In October after the summer beach crowds diminish, visitors to San Diego can relish in the sunny weather and warm temperatures and enjoy the city’s world-class family attractions.

CRAFT BEER CAPITAL OF THE USA

All that fun can be thirsty work, and San Diego certainly isn’t short of craft breweries to keep that thirst at bay. Cited “a sunny haven for suds lovers”, San Diego boasts a casual, relaxed atmosphere and locals who take a good beer seriously – without taking themselves too seriously!

Every November, San Diego hosts San Diego Beer Week, an annual 10-day-long craft beer celebration throughout the county. Smaller beer celebrations and tasting events are also held in San Diego neighborhoods throughout the year.

NEIGHBOURHOODS

The true character and colour of San Diego can be found in its neighbourhoods, and the variety and diversity of the city’s 100+ neighbourhoods paint a striking portrait of California’s second largest city. From the popular outdoor cafes and Italian eateries of Little Italy, to the hip and trendy offerings of East Village, Hillcrest and North Park, to the laidback 60’s attitude of Ocean Beach, San Diego is a multi-faceted metropolis.

The Mediterranean-style village of La Jolla, curved along the blue Pacific, is considered the “jewel” of San Diego. One of the most sought-after vacation destinations in Southern California, La Jolla offers luxurious hotels and resorts, fine dining with breathtaking ocean

views, retail shopping that rivals northern neighbours Rodeo Drive and South Coast Plaza, and sophisticated, world-class arts and culture. La Jolla’s strikingly beautiful setting is complemented by endless outdoor recreational activities including diving, kayaking, surfing, paragliding and golf.

UNITED BY BORDER: BAJA CALIFORNIA

Pristine beaches and vibrant neighbourhoods make San Diego the ultimate beach city, but its relationship and proximity to Baja California, Mexico, makes San Diego a unique destination unlike any other in the U.S., where art, architecture, cuisine and more build cultural bridges on both sides of the border.

At less than 32 kilometres from downtown San Diego, the busiest border crossing in the world connects the city with Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada and Guadalupe Valley, a cluster of cities known for their rich artistic and culinary offerings. Here, a continuous exchange of ideas, flavours and traditions shape San Diego’s cultural, historic and culinary identity.

A capital city that is monumentally cool.

The USA’s capital is steeped in history and boasts iconic monuments, a vast array of museums and galleries and a cool night scene that can all be found in a flat 10 mile by 10 mile radius.

So grab a bike or strap on your walking shoes to check out the District of Columbia.

MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS

Marvel at the national landmarks in Washington DC that make up America’s front yard. Beginning at the National Mall you will be in awe of the iconic symbols of American history. From the Jefferson Memorial which stands as a symbol of liberty and was designed as a smaller version of the Roman Pantheon with marble steps and monumental Ionic columns; to the Lincoln Memorial which has a 19-foot statue of Abraham Lincoln sitting overlooking the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument from his permanent seat on America’s front yard. Dedicated in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial has been home to many defining moments in American history. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in front of 250,000 attendees and of course many other famous and inspiring monuments along the way.

Did you know that 16 of the 19 Smithsonian museums are all in DC, even the zoo and they are all free of charge? Aside from the plethora on offer for free there are a number of additional museums that have to be seen whilst in DC. The Newseum which is a dynamic, engaging and interactive museum allowing visitors to experience the stories of yesterday and today through the eyes of the media. Trip advisor rates the Newseum as one of the top 5 museums in the USA. The JFK exhibit, the Berlin Wall and the 9/11 exhibit are there to name a few.

Another all-time favourite is the International Spy Museum, solely dedicated to the world of espionage. You’ll see artefacts that illuminate the work of famous spies and pivotal espionage actions.

FOOD

Forge your own foodie adventure and discover the flavour of each of the District’s thriving communities.

The culinary adventures in each one of DC’s neighbourhoods are endless, from hip and historic hot spots in Georgetown to the endless stream of new, critically acclaimed restaurants in Shaw and much more. The District’s line-up of celebrity chefs and culinary experts, along with a diverse roster of restaurants from all over the world, mean your trip can be filled with deliciousness from Michelin star to Ben’s Chilli Bowl - a favourite haunt for Mr Obama.

ART AND CULTURE

Washington is proud of its dedication to art and culture and is the home to such prestigious venues as the National Theatre, the Kennedy Centre and the Folger Theatre. Jazz music has an esteemed history here. In the early 20th century, locals such as Duke Ellington climbed on stages along U St NW, which later paved the way for legends such a Marvin Gaye. U St is still the best place to head out to hear local and international artists pay homage to the music legacy of the area.

HISTORY AND POLITICS

You can cram so much US history into one day in DC. Check out the Declaration of Independence, see the flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner, visit Ford’s Theatre where Lincoln was assassinated and view the world famous White House. The President of the United States of America, Congress and the Supreme Court are all there, the three pillars of US government. Look up and look around in this thrilling city, you can feel the power of the USA beating here.

Fill in any classic California dreamin’ itinerary with 72 hours in West Hollywood (known by locals as WeHo), a tiny town with a big reputation.

Picture days of sun-soaked poolside pleasures, maybe a little shopping or a ridiculously pampering spa treatment … then nights of hard-to-snag dinner reservations, dancing and bar hopping, and eventually ending in a sumptuously divine bed in cloudlike linens.

ROOFTOP POOLS AND BARS

West Hollywood has more bars per square kilometre than any other city in California, and more rooftop pools, restaurants and nightclubs. No wonder West Hollywood’s population almost doubles on weekends.

For families and singles alike, pools are the perfect antidote to beaches. WeHo’s hotel pool options offer amenities you’ll love: towel service, shade you don’t have to drag behind you, secure wifi, and cool, cool cocktails. Families score big time at Best Western Plus Sunset Plaza Hotel, with a beautiful pool setting and complimentary full (hot) breakfasts. For more of a family splurge, the Le Parc Suite Hotel features kitchenettes, childcare and babysitting, and a rooftop skydeck and heated pool.

Some in-the-know denizens let bar and club hopping rule their itinerary impulses. Start any evening at the Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel, at the bar’s casual poolside terrace, with sweeping views of L.A. for a glass of bubbly. The rooftop at E.P. & L.P. sports 360-degree views of the cityscape and Hollywood Hills, creative cocktails, and a handful of benches and fire pits to keep the night both cozy and chill. Not to be outdone or outshone, though, the The Mondrian Los Angeles (with its glamorous and gorgeous Skybar) and The Standard, Hollywood (where The Pool Deck comes alive with bright blue astro turf, live music, and ping pong) rule the sundrenched roost.

WALKABLE, WELCOMING AND SOCIABLE

WeHo is whopping 4.9 square kilometres whereas Los Angeles is 1,303 square kilometres – do the math. If you want to experience Los Angeles without spending most of your time in the car, a guided tour from Bikes and Hikes LA is the perfect solution. Tours range from biking through old Hollywood, movie star homes and filming locations to hiking the Hollywood Hills.

WeHo is a welcoming state of mind as well as its own city, making no apologies for its unique lifestyle and outlook. It seems fitting, then, that Santa Monica Boulevard, as it passes through WeHo, is ground zero for L.A.’s LGBTQ nightlife scene. It even boasts the most popular gay bar in America, The Abbey, a joyful madhouse with indoor and outdoor bars, lounge beds, live DJs, sassy drag queens, endless dancing and soon-to-be reality TV show.

Social self-expression rules in WeHo; it’s as if West Hollywood was ready-made for Instagrammers. Shoot the instantly recognizable Hollywood sign, or snap a selfie at any of the places highlighted here, which will firmly establish you as an insider, a 72-hour pleasure-seeker. It’ll be the unfiltered, unfettered highlight of your California dreamin’.

WHAT TO DO, SEE, TASTE AND EXPERIENCE ON YOUR STOPOVER

As a popular stopover spot for Australian travellers making their way to Europe, Singapore offers plenty for inexperienced and seasoned travellers alike. Breaking up a long flight with a few days in Singapore is a smart way to soften the jetlag blow and see a new city at the same time. Here’s how to spend 48 hours in this cosmopolitan place that is full of surprises:

DAY ONE

Morning: Take it easy by starting your day with a leisurely brunch at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Stretch your legs on a walk around the verdant grounds that are home to an astounding array of tropical plants, then stop in at one of the onsite cafes for a casual brunch and coffee. Starting your journey in Singapore surrounded by nature is a good way to shrug off jetlag and recalibrate after a flight.

Midday: Head to the Orchard Road district to soak up the electric atmosphere of this popular shopping and entertainment precinct. Shop up a storm at one of the many department store located here, drop into a contemporary art gallery or studio to see the local art scene in action and grab lunch at one of the casual eateries or food courts dotted throughout the precinct. Everything from tea lounges to Michelin-starred

restaurants can be found in the Orchard Road area.

Afternoon: After taking a refreshing break at your hotel, head to the Clarke Quay area to enjoy a riverside drink in the afternoon sun (or stay inside to avoid the heat and soak up the air-conditioning). Many bars, pubs and restaurants can be found at Clarke Quay which is generally open from noon to late at night, so visitors are spoiled for choice in this area.

Evening: Take to the water on a cruise along the Singapore River. Seeing Singapore’s skyline by night is must-do and floating down the river away from the city streets is a relaxing way to see the city after dark. Afterwards, alight at one of the quays and enjoy a seafood feast at one of the many restaurants that line the river. Chilli crab is one of Singapore’s most beloved dishes so why not sample it on your first night?

DAY TWO

Morning: Start the day by meeting new friends at the Singapore Zoo. For a true once-in-a-lifetime experience, book in to share a very special jungle breakfast with some of the local residents. Dining with orangutans is something you’ll never forget and is best booked in advance to avoid missing out. Afterwards, wander around the grounds of this sprawling zoo where monkeys, hippos, tapirs, chimpanzees, lizards and exotic birds can be found.

Midday: Catch a taxi to the Little India area of Singapore to enjoy a curry, mango lassi and other Indian delicacies for lunch. With a significant population of Indians living in Singapore, this is a top spot to savour the flavours of the Subcontinent without having to fly to India. Afterwards, wander around this small yet atmospheric enclave to witness the colours and energy of the local retail scene. From brightly coloured saris to fragrant spices, art, incense, sweets, gold jewellery and more, this is one of Singapore’s most vibrant areas. Want to learn more about Indian culture in Singapore? Visit the Indian Heritage Centre on Campbell Lane to find out about how Indians came to call Singapore home.
