It’s a great pleasure for me to introduce the new Bonfiglioli Engineering magazine, an additional opportunity for us to be closer to our Clients, Employees, Partners, Suppliers. I trust this magazine will be a source of exchange of ideas and common growth, as well an opportunity of reading something interesting about our markets and not only…

2019 is going to be a key year in the history of Bonfiglioli Engineering. After a successful 2018, in which important accomplishments have been attained, the year ahead is going to be characterised by some great changes for our Company. Bonfiglioli Engineering has been steadily growing in the past years, and for this we have all our Customers to thank for, for their renewed and continued trust in us. It is of fundamental importance when a Customer renews his preference for us, which is happening extremely frequently, much to our gratitude and satisfaction. Our main goal for 2019 is to continue this trend and to reinforce partnerships with our Valued Customers. Growth is our imperative, and the only way we can accomplish it, is to grow together with our Customers.

In 2019, Bonfiglioli Engineering growth will be symbolized by our new premise; a completely renovated building with a production and office surface that’s thrice the present one, to cover our needs of space and rational operations. The internal layout has been studied taking benefit of specialised external consultants according to the Lean Manufacturing concepts; offices and common spaces have been specifically designed to grant efficient operations in a pleasant environment, to offer a nice experience in day to day life.

We will continue our actions devoted to the development of new product and new technologies. All the markets we serve are in fast evolution, and new needs are continuously arising from our Customers; our goal is to be the reliable partner & consultant, able to support them in this continuous evolution, by providing the most updated technological solutions and services.

Last but not the least, a very big thank you to all Bonfiglioli Engineering employees; they are the real protagonists of the extremely successful life of this Company, with their daily enthusiasm, proactivity and dedication. The most advanced of approaches has been used to modernize & restructure the building in terms eco-sustainability, heating systems with zero methane consumption and use of solar panels.

Special focus has been laid on wellness, health and safety of all employees. Wellness consultants have played an important role to design the office area (2.000 square meters).

The new site also boasts of a large warehouse and an exclusive showroom, displaying machinery and containers, dedicated to clients.

This move comes with the objective of upgrading size and optimizing production to meet the ever-growing demands of client partners.

DESTINATION B.E.Bonfiglioli Engineering Sets Out to Expands its Horizons

Years of experience, expertise and innovation have paved the way for Bonfiglioli Engineering to grow continuously and finally expand its horizons.

In 2019, Bonfiglioli is all set to enlarge its premises, moving to a newer and bigger location with a total area of 11.000 square meters, hosting a staff of over 90 employees.

The production area which has been designed in collaboration with Specialized Consultants, is based on the principles of Lean Manufacturing, to greatly improve production efficiencies, eliminate wastes and reduce costs.

A value stream mapping has been done for the production area that has a sizable capacity (4.000 square meters, capable of assembling 20 rotative

Bonfiglioli Engineering has always been a visionary & an innovative company; founded in 1974, with its first ingenious leak testing machine for plastic containers.

Diversification followed in 1985 with breakthrough into metal cans & aerosols’ market, proposing alternative testing methods to the hot water tank testing for aerosols, within the same year.

In 1988, it launched its first patented pharmaceutical equipment, thus covering most sectors of the inspection machinery market, conquring new markets and diversifying its portfolio and technology proposals over the years.

The potential of Bonfiglioli resulted in its exponential growth and transition from a family owned business to a merit based company when it was acquired by the Tasi Group, world leader in superior inspection instrumentation tests & systems, in 2012, taking Bonfiglioli Engineering from local to a truly global company. Many injectable drugs are sealed into containers (typically glass vials or ampoules) after processing, in protective atmospheres to avoid contact with air that can damage quallity & effectiveness. Nobody would like to open a yogurt jar and find fungus or buy medicine and find it has lost its effectiveness due to oxidation. Here we are identifying two main impacts: Business Impact and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) Impact. In the first case, the company can lose business, in the second, it could cause serious illness to people.

Different Container Closure Integrity Testing (CCIT) methods can be put in place to avoid the above: Vacuum Decay, Pressure Decay, Force Decay, Lid Deflection, Spark Test and last but not the least Headspace Gas Analysis (HGA).

Pharmaceutical Companies are required to protect their products not only with proper and safe enclosures, but they must also fill the space that surrounds the product (i.e. headspace), with some

Headspace Gas Analysis: What’s on the Shelf?

How can I perform headspace gas analysis in closed containers? Likely, some of you have found yourselves to have to give an answer to this question, but first of all some of you would like to know WHY we should take care of gases in the headspace of containers. Well, we would like to help you with the following notes to find answers to your questions.

particular gases (e.g. Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide) or simply maintain a high level of vacuum inside the enclosure, to avoid contact with oxygen or moisture.

At this point dear reader, I hope you have understood why it is so important to know what’s happening inside the headspace of your container. Headspace Gas Analysis plays an important role among the CCITs. Let’s add some more details.

Two different methods can be used to inspect headspace: destructive and non-destructive method.

In the destructive method, measurement of gas percentage present inside closed package requires the necessity to bring part of its internal atmosphere in contact with a proper sensor (e.g. chemical cell or zirconium oxide for oxygen) to be able to produce electricity proportionally to the gas concentration or use optical fluorescence technologies in case of oxygen detection. Both inspection methods result in package destruction.

Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) is a non-destructive method, able to measure the concentration of a certain gas in closed container, with a sufficient headspace size to pass through with a laser beam with fairly good transparency to laser light: glass and plastic containers can be inspected as well if these conditions are satisfied.

TDLAS is a technology based on laser absorption spectroscopy, wherein the wavelength diode laser is tuned over the absorption line of the gas under test (760 nm for Oxygen, 1854 nm for Moisture, 2000 nm for Carbon Dioxide) and the intensity of the transmitted radiation is measured. More the gas molecules are present in the head space, less the energy will arrive at the photodiode used to convert

light into electrical signal. The transmitted intensity can be related to the gas concentration by the Beer-Lambert law.

It is possible to obtain information related to the gas under test measuring Area and Width of the Absorption Curve. However, these measurements are unitless, so a Calibration Procedure is necessary to correlate these values to Gas Concentration (%) or Total Pressure (mbarA). Calibration Procedure is strictly related to Standards concept.

It is possible to apply techniques of modulation in high frequency to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio, ensuring the detection of small variations of signals in front of a wider operating range: WMS (Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy) and FMS (Frequency Modulation Spectroscopy) are the most common types of modulation techniques. FMS has a higher modulation frequency (some MHz) than WMS (some KHz); a lower laser residual noise is its main advantage; however, the detectable minimum quantity of gas is less dependent on laser residual noise than Etalon Effect for instance. Furthermore, working at such high frequencies has another drawback: we need to use analog electronic components instead of digital ones thereby renouncing great advantages coming from them.

Now that we have more knowledge of this technology, we could be interested to understand how to take advantage from a non-destructive method. You can focus on the following comparisons between the standard destructive method and the non-destructive HGA method to draw your own conclusions:

• Standard Methods to measure gas concentration or pressure value are destructive. The packages can’t be recovered even if we have a conforming test…

HGA is a non-destructive measurement method; packages can be recovered after conforming tests. More valuable the product, more the item is important;

• Standard Methods are slow; they can’t guarantee 100% check of the whole production…

HGA is very fast and it can be placed into an in-line

process to test 100% of the production. It is more expensive, but return of investment covers the overall expenses;

• Standard Methods of Leak Detection don’t find non-conforming packages due to process anomalies if they are properly sealed…

HGA finds non-conforming packages even if they are properly sealed; it measures the gas partial pressure in the headspace.

It is important to remember however, that HGA is not a leak detector if quarantine period is not part of the production process. I hope you have found some interesting food for thought about these intriguing arguments.

Bonfiglioli Engineering’s Christmas celebrations were hosted at the current B.E. site, an occasion to come together as one and bid farewell to the current company premises, which has housed diverse number of people, with diverse number of experiences and countless success stories for over 40 years.

Andrea Cavanna, MD Bonfiglioli Engineering, took the occasion to address the team, thanking them for their efforts all along 2018 and mentioning the objectives needed to be achieved for 2019. A positive track record coupled with a new & much bigger location, 2019 will certainly go down as a milestone year, in the history of Bonfiglioli Engineering.

The celebrations were concluded with Tombola draw games, cheers and much laughter; a rather special festivity and a warm way of saluting & commending the company premises.

CUSTOMERCARE

In my 10-years experience in the field managing the After Sales Department, I realized that prompt reaction in solving problems is what customers expect the most. We often work on the production lines, which means that they require immediate assistance in order to avoid extended production downtime.

Multiple assistance options are currently available: On-site, On-phone, On-line (remote assistance). The technical assistance provided to the end-users is increasingly focused on mantaining high standard levels and enhancing the range of services at the same time.

Bonfiglioli Engineering has been developing an extensive plan of professional training sessions with regular updates for the technical staff, both in production and during acceptance of each machine.

The Customer Care Department is a strategic branch for Bonfiglioli Engineering which works closely with the Commercial Team and ensures that all projects are completed properly and on time. The Customer Care Dept. offers its support right from the early after-sales phase as a reference point for machine start-up, spare parts requests, maintenance and technical assistance.

Thanks to the branch offices located in US and Singapore, plus an extensive network of technicians from our partner agencies and representatives, such as India, Argentina and Brazil, B.E. is able to reach every customer worldwide and guarantee dedicated assistance throughout the entire equipment life cycle. With over 5000 installations around the world, the company serves a truly global customer base.

The end-user themselves represent a continuous source of improvement because significant know-how, expertise and technical skills are required to develop customized solutions and increase machine efficiency.

An ambitious project of transformation from the old After Sales Department to a completely renewed Customer Care Department has been implemented by B.E. to achieve complete customer satisfaction. This “new” office will carry out many activities such as technical support, spare parts and on-site maintenance, thanks to a dedicated telephone line with voice-mail and more flexibility in working hours to bridge the worldwide time difference gaps.

As a Business Development Manager - MRO, I will be working on upgrading the oldest Bonfiglioli Engineering machines by proposing customized maintenance plans that match customers’ expectations and allow them to keep using the old equipment with the most advanced electronics. More than 60 upgrades have already been carried out, but there’s still a lot of work to do. In 2019, we hope to develop an increasingly client-oriented approach in order to guarantee the best possible support to our customers and thank them for their trust in us.

CASE STUDY #1

C H A L L E N G EPartner client needed to verify the capability of Bonfiglioli Engineering’s proposed solution to detect leaks in filled and finished IV Bags size 1000 ml.

S O L U T I O NThe test was conducted by simulating the test of the automatic machine (model PK-VF) on Bonfiglioli Engineering lab-scale leak detection equipment (model LF-S11).

Tests were performed on filled and finished 1000 ml IV bags, first on conforming parts then by creating artificial leaks by means of calibrated needles.

A personalized and suitable testing chamber was prepared for the container and the tests were conducted by B.E. experts using the non-invasive Vacuum Decay Method, by setting up parameters based on pack/testing chamber.

What do you find the most challenging at B.E.? Unusual projects.

What has been your favorite project at B.E.? Our first machinery for pharmaceutical market in 2002.

What have you gained from working at B.E.? Appreciation of team and pleasure to satisfy customer requirements with good projects.

What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with B.E.? Where do you see B.E. in 5/10 years? Customers satisfied with our technology and colleagues satisfied with B.E. If we will be able to match these two issues, B.E. will gain a top position in the world scenario.

Do you have an office nickname? What is it? Forment; boss.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why? Albert Einstein, I would like to have a long walk with him in the mountains, speaking about bees.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us. I began to have budget issue for my projects when I was very young. My parents stopped funding me after a model rocket explosion in house courtyard.

Bonfiglioli Engineering’s vendors, employees, sales representatives and clients are all very important stakeholders. Each one plays a significant role for the business and Bonfiglioli is grateful to have such strong long-term partnerships.

Here is a contribution from Jean-Francois Battaini, Recipharm Kaysersberg’s Project Manager, for Bonfiglioli Engineering:

The Recipharm Kaysersberg laboratories were created in 1935 by Mr. Pierre-Georges Ferrenbach under the name of POS (Sterile Ophthalmic Product). In 2016 Recipharm acquired the “Alcon / Novartis” laboratories of the Kaysersberg plant. Recipharm then decided to invest in the Kaysersberg plant for a large-scale project: the construction of a new high-speed packaging line specialized in eye drops.

“Recipharm envisioned an automated solution for this purpose, which could grow in various stages of expansion with ever-increasing requirements, and with which to manage the wide range of customer orders in a flexible and efficient way”, summed up Yves Buelens, Chief Executive Officer of Recipharm. This project will be called “OPTILINE 1”.

It’s given birth to a new partnership with the company BONFIGLIOLI ENGINEERING regarding the Integrity Control part of the single doses.

We went through several phases of tests before validating and giving our agreement for this project.

Les laboratoires Recipharm Kaysersberg ont été créés en 1935 par Mr. Pierre-Georges Ferrenbach sous le nom de POS (Produit Ophtalmique stérile). En 2016 Recipharm fait l’acquisition des laboratoires “Alcon / Novartis” du site de Kaysersberg. Sans tarder Recipharm décide d’investir sur ce site de Kaysersberg pour un projet de grande envergure: la construction d’une nouvelle ligne de conditionnement à haute cadence spécialisé dans les collyres.

“Recipharm envisageait une solution automatisée à cet effet, qui pourrait croître à différents stades d’expansion avec nos exigences sans cesse croissantes, et avec laquelle nous pourrions gérer le large éventail de commandes clients de manière flexible et efficace”, a résumé Yves Buelens, Directeur Général de Recipharm. Ce projet sera baptisé « OPTILINE 1 ».

C’est en partenariat avec la société BONFIGLIOLI ENGINEERING que va naitre ce projet, en ce qui concerne la partie contrôle d’intégrité des monodoses.

A whole series of tests have been carried out and a close collaboration has been necessary with the other equipment manufacturers interfacing with our new Bonfiglioli Engineering waterproofing control equipment.

It was in January 2018 that this new line went into production and to date the goal has been fulfilled and the test machine brings full satisfaction.

Nous sommes passés par plusieurs phases de tests avant de valider et donner notre accord pour ce projet.

Toute une batterie de tests ont été réalisés et une collaboration étroite a été nécessaire avec les autres équipementiers en interface avec notre nouvelle équipement de contrôle d’étanchéité Bonfiglioli.
