After voting on Saturday, 9 October it’s less than a month to go until the new

Auckland City Council comes into existence, replacing the seven city and district councils any associated community boards and the Auckland Regional Council. How will it affect you?

Auckland has been split into 13 areas called wards, and 21 local boards some (like ours) are subdivided. The North Shore ward has two local boards Kaipatiki and Devonport-Takapuna. The local representatives who we elect will be the ones to make decisions for our community on local issues, activities and facilities. In our case eight members each for Kaipataki and Devonport-Takapuna respectively.

Kaipataki Local Board takes in the existing boundaries of Birkenhead, Northcote, Glenfield, Beach Haven and Birkdale, including Chatswood, Highbury, Hillcrest and Marlborough. Sunset Road and Glendhu Road are bordering roads as is the Northern Motorway which forms the boundary between Takapuna-Devonport and Kaipatiki.

The biggest change, explains Marilyn Nicholls,

customer services manager with North Shore City, is in how the area is represented by those persons elected. “The new structure is about trying to keep local Issues that are important dealt with at a local level so they can receive attention:”

The community groups, community houses and parks volunteer management committees that currently provide reports to either Glenfield or Birkenhead Community Boards, will provide those updates and reports to the new Kaipatiki Local Board.

Because the changes are being made in how the area is represented politically, it will be the elected members who will have to have a wider overview. Currently a Glenfield board decision does not necessarily have to take into account the views of Bikrenhead and vice versa. In the new structure as the members are being elected by the Wward, they will have to consider how decisions will affect their neighbours.

Our elected members will have an office in the ward area where the public will have access to them (similar to your Local MP’s Office). Currently public can only call by phone, or

contact elected members by arrangement, or attend the Public forums at board meetings.

Make a note that the current North Shore City website: www.northshorecity.govt.nz,

will be replaced with www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

The 1920s to 1950s was a key time for the commercial development of Birkenhead

township, coinciding with the Art Deco period to reveal some architectural treasures. The area known from the 1920s as Highbury Corner was originally comprised of four farm allotments at the intersection of Hinemoa (formerly Hauraki, Great North) Road, Rawene Road, Mokoia (formerly Roberts) Road and Birkenhead (formerly Glenfield, Great North) Road. Our first buildings arrived in the town in the early 1920s with the Fredrick Morris Block from 1-15 Birkenhead Avenue and developed around our historic roundabout. Many of the road names and landmarks originated from families who had settled here. The Nell Fisher Reserve is home to the War Memorial, a stunning sample of period Art Deco, erected by the Birkenhead Borough Council in 1927Visit some of today’s commercial businesses housed in the architectural gems of a glamorous era:The earliest known surviving retail building is the grocery business of Stephen F. Roberts General Store on Himemoa dating from c.

1915 and is now home to the Royal Thai restaurant.Adjacent to this is Hawkins Grocery Store, now Cheeky Raskals childrenswear. The Noads and Greens Buildings of the 1950s houses Hayashi Japanese Restaurant and Hinemoa Hair Design. Sutcliffe Garage 1926, on Hinemoa Street is now Armstrongs Security, Arivika Hair and Looking Good Alterations.Highbury Corner at the roundabout was developed in 1928 and is currently being renovated. The W.H. Payne Building is today home to the Corner Barber Shop of 78 years, the village fish shop and beauty salon to name a few.The Highbury Buildings of 1934 are home to Yarntons fashion.Frederick Morris Block of the 1920s (original grocery store for the area) is the oldest group of buildings developed from eight allotments on that corner beginning at The Outfit and finishing at Noodle Canteen. It is worth visiting Ashore Fine Foods to see the butcher’s hooks from Scotts Butcher Shop on the original ceiling and the makeshift Dark Room created by the notable photographer of the day, George Jasper. His own home

was the transitional bungalow/villa at 17-19 Birkenhead Avenue.Birkenhead Town Centre Association holds Chelsea Sugar Club Ball with its Art Deco theme on Saturday, 11 September from 7.30pm. When European settlers arrived in the 1860s they began farming and

fruitgrowing, which the district became famous for. Over the next decade the area was still very much a pioneering settlement occupied by a few settlers, a few Maori and some gumdiggers. The first Methodist church was built at Zion Hill in 1880 by W.F. Hammond, who Hammond Place in the township is named after. Four years later Chelsea Sugar Works opened to bring workers and more settlers to the district. In 1888 the Birkdale (now Beach Haven) wharf was built and Birkenhead was gazetted as a Borough.By 1913 Birkenhead had gained some distinction as Auckland’s “most healthful marine suburb”, indeed medical men repeatedly advised their patients to take up residence in the district. Its unique position on the Northern shore of the Waitemata Harbour contributing in no small degree to the forming of what was then considered the most magnificent harbour in the world, both from scenic and commercial points of view. The first Birkenhead wharf dates from 1882.The approach was by ferry boat which left Auckland every half hour. The road from the wharf, what is today Hinemoa Street, was

cut partially from the solid cliff and led to the centre of town - today’s historic focal point, Highbury Corner, at the original junction of the four roads Hinemoa, Rawene, Mokoia and Birkenhead Avenue. In 1913 Birkenhead’s 2,700 acres made it the largest of any Auckland suburb, a 10 mile water frontage gave the 2,200 residents a number of beautiful and secluded beaches for picnicking and bathing. On the outskirts Birkdale’s fruit, particularly strawberry, and poultry farms flourished thanks to a convenient wharf access. Ferry access was also the reason Birkenhead is counted as Auckland’s first Weekend Retreat.North Shore’s first weekend retrest, Birkenhead can also be counted as the first Weekend Retreat for city tourists; first industry was Chelsea Sugar; first church

Zion Hill Methodist and the first graveyard. Northcote had the first school (now Northcote College) as did Birkdale which still operates as a primary school. The Zion Hill church outpost is the site of the first library. The first barber shop, the family run Burfords, still runs today by daughter Laurell Hall, and the first bus company, Birkenhead Transport is still operated by the Inwards family.Material sourced from historical documents made available by Kae Condon, Birkenhead Town Centre Manager.

Prominent Northcote resident and former Northcote Deputy Mayor, Frank Rickman,

spoke in early September at a venue most dear to him, the Northcote Public Library, as part of the North Shore City Heritage Festival:

“When I arrived from the UK in 1954, having met my Kiwi fiancé in London when she was on her OE in England, Northcote a small village and a delightful community which was a wonderful surprise to me. I was met by Daphne when I came by boat to Wellington, we rode the overnight train to Auckland crossing the harbour by vehicular ferry to Northcote - as of course the Bridge was not completed until 1959.

The Northcote of the 50’s was totally different

to today. We were just 4,000 residents then, the village hub was essentially Queen Street down to the Point. You knew everybody and it was a friendly, personal place.

Commuters to Auckland city, like me, caught the bus to the pier and enjoyed a 20 minute journey on the small ferry boat, time enough to wake up on the way in, and to relax and unwind on the way home. This was also a wonderful time to catch up with each other.

In 1965 I stood for and was elected to Northcote Borough Council, where I served 15 years (5 terms), ending up as Deputy Mayor in 1980.

One of the main reasons for going on Council

was my interest in books and the library. At that time the Northcote Public Library was approximately the size of a small living room, but with the completion of the bridge and the Council’s development of the shopping area, Northcote rapidly expanded. With the help of Doris Paterson, the Northcote Librarian, I pushed the concept of building a new public library to serve our ever expanding local community.

My last official Council act in 1980 was to co-sign with the then Mayor, Jean Sampson, the contract to build the new library. In 1982 it was opened by the Hon. Jim McLay, Attorney General, Minister of Justice and Northcote MP.”

crave Celebrate with us in September!Exactly one year ago, the stylish boutique home and gift store crave opened its doors to a curious community. One year on, the now-established home of gorgeous gifts continues to flourish. In fact, so much so, that crave has been selected as a Finalist in the 2010 TOP SHOP® Retail Excellence Awards.Owner and local resident Jude Turner is delighted with the response to the arrival of crave. “We had anticipated a warm welcome from the local community, but the ease with which crave has become a “go-to” destination for the perfect gift has surprised us”.Jude has deliberately chosen to source items that are not seen in other gift stores. “It was really important to me at the outset that crave stood alone in its diverse product range, so I have made a point of importing beautiful products direct from the production source. That strategy has paid off with regular feedback from customers commenting that we stock items they haven’t seen anywhere else”.To underline that philosophy, Jude has recently returned from both the California and Melbourne gift shows. “I’m really excited by some of the products I’ve discovered, and the new arrivals will start rolling out in October. We’ve got some dynamite pieces for summer, some great Christmas gifts – and a spectacular new product for girls that we will be the exclusive New Zealand stockists of”.To mark crave’s first birthday, Jude is planning a series of celebratory events and is working hard to go even further in the TOP SHOP® Awards. Whether it’s a gorgeous gift or something stylish for the home, you need look no further than crave.

Local business does good and now Spice n Easy is in the running to win at the

upcoming Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards.

Shortly after arriving to New Zealand from India, Sanjay and Vibha set up business in the area closest to their heart…Food. Nine years ago they founded “North Shore Super Store” the area’s first Indian grocery store which soon flourished thanks to business acumen and an ability to constantly cater to their community. Their successful website offered online shopping - again considering the convenience of their customers with busy lifestyles.

‘Spice n Easy’ was the natural progression from here, inspired by the interest customer showed to want to cook authentic Indian food with true flavours.

“If customers approached us with a recipe request for eg. Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, etc., we’d assist them in organizing the spices in the required amounts,” explains Sanjay.

“Catering to this ever increasing demand we organized Indian Cookery workshops

at the local Highbury Community House… a novel approach with ‘Hands on Cooking’. This platform made us envisage a product with spices; pre measured and packed for freshness inclusive of our tried and tested family recipe making it very simple to cook authentic Indian dishes at home.”

Trips back to India, prototypes, quality inspections then product positioning and distribution chains are all behind them now, ‘Spice n Easy’ is fast becoming a household name, distributed in 250 outlets nationwide including Supermarkets / Butchers /Greengrocers.

Totally packaged in New Zealand, this is a Birkenhead success story. Congratulations Sanjay and Vibha and good luck – Spice n Easy is a finalist for the 2010 Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards in 3M Excellence in Innovation AND Benefitz Best New Startup AND Enterprise North Shore Committed Optimist.

Beating strong and fast, the Heart of Beach Haven Placemaking community project is

well and truly underway to make the centre a welcoming community area where people want to spend quality time, enhancing economic activity and growth in the area. This year’s efforts are focussed on a Rangatira Road gateway themed on the Beach Haven wharf. Thanks to the area’s wonderfully active Youth Group who are represented on the working group. Despite a cold, wet winter’s day on 23 May, they spent the day tidying up the shopping centre, cleaning shop fronts and pathways, and removing rubbish before coming on to the public meeting. Part of their last school holidays were spent collecting stories from our retailers which, with retailers’ permission, will be displayed in shop-fronts, on the website and around the community.

Undergrounding of power supply in the shopping area is a viable possibility thanks to the efforts of Claire Bolton, from Beach Haven Liquor Outlet, whose petition was accepted and supported by the Community Board who have since forwarded it to Vector. The painting of Murals on some of the blank walls in the area is another of the project’s initiatives. The first of these will be the wall on the side of the chemist, visible as you drive into Beach Haven along Rangatira Rd. Neil Coleman has presented a beautiful image of the wharf with various activities being carried out. The Community Facilities Trust is assisting with the funding and members of the Haven Art Group in its execution.Ngati Whatua, the Mana Whenua of the greater Auckland area are in full support of our proposals to date, and are in discussion regarding ways of representing Mana

Whenua on our murals and for an appropriate strap line on our gateway signage. Council planner John Stenberg has been proactive in securing recycled wharf piles from the Auckland Waterfront and Birkenhead Wharf for use on this project. LandscapeWorks Ltd landscape architects have been appointed to develop our Concept Plans into a full set of working drawings for consent applications and pricing. We hope to see this project moving out of the ground in November.Follow our progress on the Beach Haven Resident’s Association website: http://www.beachhaven.org.nz/revitalize.html; and on the public notice board on the side of the doctor’s rooms in Rangatira Road.

backpacks can force the body to adapt to a forward head posture.

This repetitive stress can cause small bones in the spine to displace and put endangering stress on your spinal cord and nerves, as well as altering your posture. In fact posture is a window to the health of the spine.

Think of the nerve system as the power supply to all tissues and organs of the body. Chiropractic adjustments safely and gently remove pressure from the nerves turning the power on and allowing the body to heal.

As specialists in corrective chiropractic care our focus is to restore the natural structure and function of the spinal column and nerve system, allowing the body to restore its natural posture.

MA lot of medical practitioners talk about the importance of having good posture.

But few can help with the long-term correction of poor posture. Having your mum or nana, or someone else yell at you to “stand up straight” is all well and good, but what if you can’t?

Poor posture is a lifetime scenario for most people. If your head weighs 5kg and is aligned directly above your shoulders, the effective weight on your spinal tissues is 5kg. However, if your head has moved forward – which is quite common – with each additional inch, the load is increased by a factor of ten. So, if you are carrying your head two inches forward of where it should be, it is adding l0kg to the supporting tissues, if you are carrying it three inches forward, then 15kg of pressure is being added through your neck and shoulders. (No wonder they are often sore!) And, as a result your health and performance suffer.

In fact, when you carry your head forward for many years and your shoulders become rounded, there is a higher chance of developing arthritis in the spine. Poor posture can also affect blood flow to the spinal cord, which causes disc damage and robs the muscles

of oxygen. This can affect your life in many different ways.

Also, tendons and ligaments undergo changes that can become permanent, which is why many people with poor posture cannot correct it themselves.

Continually poor posture could be costing you thousands! A recent study reveals that suffering from chronic back pain for a year may reduce brain activity equivalent to 10 to 20 years of normal aging. The part of the brain affected in this way is what we call “grey matter”; it’s the thinking centre of the brain, responsible for

memory and information processing.

It won’t come as any surprise to you to learn that posture affects every physiological function our bodies do – from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headaches, mood swings, high blood pressure, a racing pulse and reduced lung capacity are just some of the ways bad posture can cause you problems.

Chiropractic care can help to restore normal posture and spinal alignment, reducing the chances of aches, pains and poor health.

Community Education

For many, learning to play a musical instrument is seen as a great, fun

recreational activity. Perhaps more importantly though, are the benefits young students gain that assists them in other areas of education. Increased self-discipline, problem solving skills, and confidence are clearly helped through learning music, but the greatest advantages can be found in the way that music helps with physical brain development.

Learning music requires students to develop skills using all three primary learning styles simultaneously. Integrating kinaesthetic development with visual and aural skills has been shown to assist students in other areas of learning when the teaching methods used may not be focussed to a student’s particular learning style. Additionally, music requires both sides of the brain to be utilised at the same time, for both analytical though and creative interpretation. This too assists in the communication between the two sides of a student’s brain.

By building synapses in the brain (the pathways of learning) through musical activity, young children often demonstrate more advanced skills in reading and maths. Additionally intelligence has been shown through research to be greatly enhanced with music education. Over the last few decades, there have been numerous studies performed on the relationship between music and improved academic performance. Among these, Canadian E. Glenn Schellenberg, of the University of Toronto found that 6 year olds taking music lessons showed a greater increase in their IQ as compared to those that did not learn a musical instrument. A decade earlier, at the University of Wisconsin, Frances Rauscher discovered that music could be seen to noticeably improve spatial reasoning skills. (ref: http://www.forbes.com/2004/07/15/cx_0715health_print.html)

In a competitive world, children need to be given every opportunity to succeed, so considering a professional music tutor should

be an important choice to ensure your child can reach their learning potential.

Le Roys Bush is arguably the closest stretch of “rain-forest” to Auckland City’s CBD is a

fascinating remnant of Auckland’s pre-history. But it also has a recent history that reflects the colonisation of New Zealand. In pre-European times, Le Roys Bush, known as Te Uruwao, led down the stream valley to a navigable estuary known as Wai-manawa. Local Mãori treasured the estuary and the harbour beyond as a rich source of kai moana (sea food).

In the 1900s, the estuary gradually silted up and is now the largest raupo wetland on the North Shore. The teaming whitebait and other fish life have diminished over the last century. Today whitebait (kokopu and inanga) still return to the streams of Le Roys Bush but their numbers are limited – some kokopu even swim up the stream even up the waterfall to the ponds nearer Onewa Road. In 1918 the area now known as Le Roys Bush was bought by Edward and Gertrude Le Roy

who brought native plants from Great Barrier and other areas of New Zealand enriching the flora of the valley. After his death in 1947, the Forest and Bird Society supported by local residents and the Council purchased the estate as a public reserve for the price of the timber in it. Over the years, local residents have donated, covenanted or sold additional areas of bush to the Council to enhance the natural beauty of the reserve.

Le Roys Bush Walkways

Walk from Little Shoal Bay to Highbury

18

Local Walkways

Starting from the beach at Little Shoal Bay, one can walk across the stream and along

board walks up the valley towards Highbury. Tracks exit on either side – to the west to streets off Hinemoa Street and to the north to streets off Onewa Road. Signage along the track will tell you about the environment, the wildlife and the need to protect the bush from pest species.

Walking from Little Shoal Bay along the valley,

the eco-system transforms from raupo to carex wetland with native trees and shrubs cladding the steep banks on either side. Pukeko are common and other birdlife can be seen. A community effort is progressively clearing the wetland of weed species such as pampas grass and crack willow.

At the head of the wetland, one can turn westwards up the track to the cafés of Hinemoa Street, or follow the track up

alongside the stream and over the waterfall towards Highbury.

Just past the waterfall, two streams merge – one coming from Highbury, the other from Onewa Road. There is no track to Highbury (yet) but the track leads north to Onewa Road from where one can walk the 600 metres to the cafés of Highbury.
