THEATRE BY THE SEA, which is on the NationalRegister of Historic Places, has had many incar-nations over the years. The Tyler family purchasedthe property in the early ‘20s. After Alice Tyler wasleft a widow with three young children, she ranthe property as a summer camp for girls. Whenthe depression hit, she decided to create jobs andprovide a future for her children by turning thebarn into a theatre. The 300-seat theatre openedon August 7, 1933 with a production calledStrictly Dynamite. That initial season lasted fourweeks and featured four different plays, one ofwhich was taken to New York. In 1938, a Yale Co-

operative took over. Then, on September 2, a hur-ricane hit. The back wall of the theatre caved inand the stage roof was blown off. During the re-pairs, the theater was expanded to include a bal-cony. The newly enlarged theatre operatedthrough 1941 and then went dark during the war.In 1946, the theatre’s most glamorous and star-filled period began. The theatre became what isreferred to as a “star-system” house opening witha show called Dream Girlwhich starred Judy Hol-liday. Other headliners who were brought in in-cluded Tallulah Bankhead, Mae West, GrouchoMarx, and Marlon Brando. Following the 1958season, the property was sold to the Bontecoufamily, who leased it sporadically for several years, and by 1966 there were plans to tear down thetheatre. Upon hearing that the theatre was to bedestroyed, Tommy Brent, who had previouslyworked as a publicist for the theatre, returned andsaved the theater from demolition. His first showopened on June 23, 1967 and he ran the theatresuccessfully for twenty-two years. In 1988,FourQuest Entertainment, which consisted ofLaura Harris, (who had previously worked at thetheatre for eleven summers), Renny Serre andRichard Ericson, came on board. Following exten-sive renovations, FourQuest reopened the theaterin the spring of 1989 and continued producinghigh quality summer theater in Matunuck untilthe fall of 2003. The theatre went dark once againuntil 2007, when entrepreneur Bill Hanney pur-chased the property and, with producing part-ners, successfully mounted a production of AFunny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, just six weeks later, reopening the historic theatreon August 8, 2007. Theatre By The Sea continuesto annually produce a successful four-musicalsubscription season along with a children’s the-atre and concert series.
