The island of Djurgården contains many of Stockholm’s visitor attractions and the hotel is sited between the Liljevalchs Gallery of Art of 1911 and the Amusement park, Gröna Lund. The building’s L-shaped plan provides, off the busy thorough- fare of Djurgårdsvärgen, a new public space, paved with reused limestone slabs from the previous development, which the ground floor restaurant and bar opens out onto. In the basement is a double- height museum dedicated to the band ABBA while at the upper levels the hotel plan follows the L-shape with a central corridor and circulation at either end. A series of shallow steps in section provide the majority of the hotel bedrooms with a private ter- race, accessible via the generous 3.2m-wide sliding doors to each room. To the street this results in the building recessing from the dense lines of the surrounding 18th century city. The facades are clad in cross- laminated glued pine wood that are 43mm thick for the vertical sections and 78mm for the hori- zontal sections. The thickness of the cladding is intended to give the building a robust character reminiscent of the island’s pre- industrial marine workshops. In order to protect the end grain of the timber, galvanised steel capping pieces form verti- cal junctions between the panels. The top surfaces of the horizon- tal facade beams are protected by copper flashings and the 35mm offset between the vertical and horizontal panels allows a drip to the underside of the timber panels to protect the junction between them. Fixings are either through the recess of the vertical galvanised steel capping piece or directly through the panels and then plugged. A protective coating of a semi-transparent linseed oil has been applied to all the exposed timber to provide weather protection. In the centre of Stockholm, close to the historic shipyards that now host the maritime Vasa Museum, Johan Celsing has recently com-pleted a 48-bedroom hotel. The island of Djurgården contains many of Stockholm’s visitor attractions and the hotel is sited between the Liljevalchs Gallery of Art of 1911 and the Amusement park, Gröna Lund.

The building’s L-shaped plan provides, off the busy thorough-fare of Djurgårdsvärgen, a new public space, paved with reused limestone slabs from the previous development, which the ground floor restaurant and bar opens out onto. In the basement is a double-height museum dedicated to the band ABBA while at the upper levels the hotel plan follows the L-shape with a central corridor and circulation at either end.

A series of shallow steps in section provide the majority of the hotel bedrooms with a private ter-race, accessible via the generous 3.2m-wide sliding doors to each room. To the street this results in the building recessing from the dense lines of the surrounding 18th century city.

The facades are clad in cross-laminated glued pine wood that

are 43mm thick for the vertical sections and 78mm for the hori-zontal sections. The thickness of the cladding is intended to give the building a robust character reminiscent of the island’s pre-industrial marine workshops.

In order to protect the end grain of the timber, galvanised steel capping pieces form verti-cal junctions between the panels. The top surfaces of the horizon-tal facade beams are protected by copper flashings and the 35mm offset between the vertical and horizontal panels allows a drip to the underside of the timber panels to protect the junction between them.

Fixings are either through the recess of the vertical galvanised steel capping piece or directly through the panels and then plugged. A protective coating of a semi-transparent linseed oil has been applied to all the exposed timber to provide weather protection.
