2016 HSPVA Creative Writing Middle School Workshop (See flyer
attached.) HSPVA will once again host the Middle School Creative Writing Workshop in 2016! This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th, 9 am to 2 pm. The workshop has sold out every year that we’ve held it, which says a lot for the quality of the event and its importance to the Houston community. It’s a truly remarkable workshop, where over 200 Houston-area middle-schoolers spend half a day developing their budding writing talents under the coaching of our very own creative writing students – we think that’s one reason for its success!

Due dates: Results section 11/03, 11/04 Discussion/Conclusion: 11/10, 11/11 Abstract: 11/17, 11/18 Week of October 31st Lesson: Tactile Test
Concepts The ability to discriminate between objects by using the sense of touch varies on different parts of the body. SCIENCE AND MATH SKILLS Observing, comparing, drawing conclusions Activities 1) Students explore the sense of touch by comparing skin sensitivities on the upper arm and fingertips. 2) Parts of the skin color sheet. 3) Work on science fair projects. Academic Practice: Read the Cookie Crumbles chapters 16-18. Answer the questions in the Reading Link. ALWAYS refer to your daily agenda in your neuroscience binders for assignment instructions and due dates. November 2nd/3rd Lesson: Get the Point? Concepts 1) Sensations in the skin are detected by special receptors. 2) Each receptor in the skin receives information from an area known as its receptive field. 3) Some parts of the body have more receptors in the skin than others. SCIENCE AND MATH SKILLS Predicting, measuring, gathering data, comparing and drawing conclusions Activities 1) Students experiment to discover differences in the sizes of “touch” receptive fields in their inner arms, palms and fingertips. 2) Work on science fair projects. Academic Practice: Finish the Cookie Crumbles readings and the Reading Link questions. ALWAYS refer to your daily agenda in your neuroscience binders for assignment instructions and due dates.
