    1.BACKGROUND:SITUATION TO BE T RANSFORMED.

    Soy production has been associatedwith a series of economic, ecological and social impacts, the benefits and burden

    of which are unevenly distributed to society. On the one hand, soymeal and oil are basic commodities that generate

    income to farmers, processing industries,, and support services and, providing some employment and valuable foreign

    exchange earnings. On the other hand, soy production often carries high external costs due to associated forest

    clearing, atmospheric , terrestrial and water pollution and disregard for workers', local communit y and indigenous rights.

    Soy production is usually capital-intensive and large-scale; soy is not a s mallholder subsistence crop.

    The world soybean pr oduction has increased by 4.6% annually from 1961 to 2007, reaching average annual production

    of 217.6 million tons in 2005-07(REFERENCE). World production of soybeans is predicted to increase by 2.2% annually

    to 371.3 million tons by 2030, using an exponential model with a damped trend. India is the fourth global producer of

    Soybean (just behind USA, Brazil and Argentina) with annual production of 4-7 million tons (REFERENCE). Madhya

    Pradesh isbeing the leading producing state of India which contributes to ar ound 56% of the total Indian production and

    is also called the soybean bowl in India(REFERENCE), and Europe alone imports more than 25 million tons every year

    (FROM INDIA?) (European Union 22 million tons; Central Europe 3.5 million tons). China is the second importer of

    soybeans with annual total imports of 15-18 million tons.

    About 85% of the soybean produce is crushed and bi-products of soybean are derived. Soybeans are suitable for

    capital-intensive, large-scale cultivation. From the 85% As soybeans yield 18% oil and 79% meal after processing, the

    market for soybean products is mostly driven by the livestock feed industry (REFERENCE). After palm oil, it is the most

    important edible oil traded in the international market. It accounts for 22.85% of the total trade volume of the edible oils

    in the world (REFERENCE). The contribution of soy oil in worlds total oil production has reached around 25% after

    increasing 5.8% during the last 10 years and figures around 31 m illion tons(REFERENCE)

    This project will intitallyinitially focus on soy farming in India. India has been selected as it is the least developed country

    out of the five biggest world producers of Soy bean. The greatest challenge is Soil erosion and soil dedregration due to

    high use of fertilizer and resource intensive methods.

    2.OVERALL IMPACT:VISION,GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.

    Vision:Soybean production is carried out in a sustainable way which requires an appropriate balance of economic, social

    and environmental management.

    Mission:

    y To create demand for sustainable soybeans.

    Goals:

    1. Provide information to consumers about the sustainability of the soybeans;

    2. Enhance awareness on the need for the development of sustainablesoybeans to producers and companies;

    3. Promote community development in poor rural areas where farmers have been laid off as aconsequence of

    expansion of large-scale intensive agriculture;

    4. Positively influence local, national and international legislation on s ustainable soybean production.

    3.SOLUTION/MODEL

    Responsible companies that purchase soy and soy products want to be sure that theyare not contributing to these

    negative impacts, while responsible soy producers need a mechanism for reassur ing their customers that they are

    acting sustainably. One way of accomplishing this is the development and use of an internationally acceptedcertificate

    that indentifies sustainable soy production. This certificate would pr ovide clarity to producers about what they need to do

    and allows purchasers to source soy and soy products from producers who meet the criteria and are therefore not

    associated with negative environmental and social impacts such as those identified above. The purpose of the

    Sustainable Soybean Certificated is to provide an instrumentthat can be used by large (WHAT IS LARGE?) consumers

    as well as final consumers to identify those productsthan fulfill sustainable agricultur e requiremen ts.
