CHANDIGARH, JULY 3: Google on Saturday honoured Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a German doctor consid- ered the father of the Paralympic Games, with a Doodle. The doodle shows various paralympic athletes along with a picture of Sir Ludwig. Born in Tost, Germany (now Toszek, Poland) on July 3, 1899, Lud- wig Guttmann established the Stoke Mandeville Games, the sporting event for the disabled that evolved into the Paralympic Games in England. He received his MD in 1924 and commenced his research work on spinal cord injuries. “Today, Paralympic athletes are rightfully recognised for their skills and achievements. The Paralympic Games continue to be a driving force for promoting the rights and indepen- dence of people with disabilities, with a lasting impact on equal treatment and opportunity,” the Google Doodle page says. In England, Guttmann advanced his research in para- plegia. In 1944, he put his innovative ap- proach into practice as the director of the National Spinal In- juries Center at Stoke Mandeville Hos- pital. In 1948, he organized a 16-person archery contest, one of the first official competitive sporting events for wheel- chair users. Later called the “Stoke Mandeville Games” or the “Olympics for the Disabled,” the competition demonstrated the power of elite sport to break down barriers for disability and garnered the attention of global medical and sporting communities. In 1960, Guttmann facilitated the International Stoke Mandeville Games, following the 1960 Summer Olympics, the first of many Para- lympic Games. His passion for He received numerous accolades for his contributions, the highest among which was being knighted by the Queen in 1966. The host nation will play Peru, who beat Paraguay on penalties earlier in the day, at Rio de Janeiro’s Nilton Santos stadium on July 5. The other quarter-finals will be played on Saturday, with Argentina playing Ecuador and Uruguay fac- ing Colombia. Friday's tie between the last two Copa America champions was more closely fought than their form coming into the game suggested. Brazil were un- beaten in 11 games and topped Group B, while Chile finished only fourth in Group A and have drawn four of their last six matches 1-1. After an even and goal- less first 45 minutes, the match sparked into life within seconds of the restart, when substitute Lu- cas Paqueta worked a scrappy one-two with Ney- mar and then held off Gary Medel to fire home from close range. However, the outlook changed less than two minutes later. Brazil were reduced to 10 men af- ter Gabriel Jesus was shown a straight red for a horrific kung-fu kick that sent Eugenio Mena tum- bling. Brazil are unused to being under pressure, espe- cially at home, but Chile forced them onto the back foot for large parts of the second half as they poured forward in search of an equaliser. Ben Brereton, the English-born striker who replaced Alexis Sanchez at half-time, hit the bar with a looping header and Eder- son made at least two good saves.= But the Chileans, winners in 2015 and 2016, could not get the goal and crashed out. "We were beaten by the favourites, the team playing at home," said Chilean mid- fielder Arturo Vidal. "At least we will leave with our heads held high." Ekta, a resident of Urban Estate locality in Hisar, is serving as an HCS (Allied) officer in Haryana. She is top ranked in her category in Asia and was selected af- ter trials in Delhi on Friday. Vowing to keep up her form in a bid to win gold for the country, Ekta said it was a dream for her like every athlete to represent the country in the greatest show of sports. "Hard work has transformed this wish into reality. Now, I am focused on bringing a gold medal for the country,” she said. After completing school- ing, Ekta had aspired to be a medical student and also joined coaching classes in Delhi. However, an unfortunate accident occurred on Au- gust 4, 2003, when a truck overturned on their cab near Kundli on the Delhi- Haryana border and changed the course of her life. While six other stu- dents were crushed to death, she suffered quadri- plegic spinal cord injury and has been wheelchair- bound since. However, she did not lose hope and resumed studies after spending several months in hospital. She cracked the HCS examina- tion after completing her graduation in 2013 and was posted as assistant employ- ment officer in Hisar. Her father, Dr Baljeet Singh Bhyan, a horticultur- ist, stood by Ekta's decision when she decided to turn to sports. A late entrant in the field, Ekta started practis- ing under Amit Saroha, an Arjuna Awardee para ath- lete in Sonepat in 2014. The match is scheduled for Tuesday at Wembley Stadium in London. Italy is Europe's hottest team, extending its un- beaten run to 32 matches and its winning streak to 13 with Friday's result. By con- trast, Spain is on a 12-match unbeaten run and drew its opening two group matches. GOAL THREAT The match will be a face- off between the tourna- ment's top-scoring teams, as it stands. Spain has found the net 12 times after opening with a scoreless draw against Sweden, while Italy has 11 goals. The goals have been shared throughout the teams with neither having a player who has scored more than two. Ciro Immobile, Matteo Pessina, Manuel Lo- catelli and Lorenzo Insigne have two each for Italy, and Pablo Sarabia, Ferran Tor- res and Alvaro Morata have the same amount for Spain. HISTORY Their most recent meet- ings came in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Italy's loss and draw against Spain contributed to the team fail- ing to qualify for the tourna- ment for only the second time. The last time either team reached a major tourna- ment final was in 2012, when Spain beat Italy 4-0 to defend its European title. Only two players from that match are in the line- ups at Euro 2020. Spain still has midfielder Sergio Busquets, while Italy has veteran defenders Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. Italy prevented Spain from winning a third con- secutive European Champi- onship by beating the de- fending champions 2-0 in the round of 16 at Euro 2016. The Spanish beat Italy on penalties in the Euro 2008 quarterfinals before ending their 44-year trophy drought.
