While many items original to this historic funeral home building

were left to rest, such as an embalming table, wooden delivery boxes with unused coffins and death records, they, along with a large collection of historical artifacts and documents, give life to the memories and history of Ryan, a small town two miles north of the Red River in Jefferson County.

The Parlor features a collection of items including Chickasaw Nation court records, exhibits showcasing the boomtown days of Ryan, newspapers dated as far back as 1892, western memorabilia and a variety of photographic memorabilia.

One of the largest exhibits in the museum, the R.B. Elliot exhibit, was donated by a local family and includes a large assortment of Native American artifacts, maps, law books and even swords.

Collections have also been donated by closed museums in the area, like the Chisholm Trail Museum in Waurika. You can even find death and birth record cards from as far

back as 1918, including the birth card of CBS series Walker, Texas Ranger star, Chuck Norris, who was born in Ryan in 1940, or Country Music Hall of Famer Floyd Tillman, born in 1914.

Each year, during the Ryan High School reunions, hundreds gather at The Parlor to reminisce with old friends over the Ryan Cowboys exhibit, which includes a copy of their first yearbook from 1917.The building, constructed in 1914

as a furniture store, became the Grantham Family Funeral Home a

few years after opening its doors. After sitting untouched for years,

the new owner, Laura Thorn Jackson, and a friend, Loretta Corley, began cleaning up the property, adding to the collection of items in preparation to open the museum to the public. For more information or to book

a free tour, contact Laura Thorn Jackson at (580) 313-1281.

Walking into Ragsdale’s Conversation Emporium at 119 North

Broadway, Suite 11, in Ada, one gets the immediate sensation that something exciting and unusual is about to happen. And Rhonda Ragsdale, proprietor of this endeavor, doesn’t disappoint. Ragsdale, along with her sister, wanted a place that would connect local artists and musicians and support a reusing/repurposing/vintage appreciation philosophy while building up a community. “Our objective is to get groups of artists and non-traditional people together to support each other’s art,” Ragsdale says. That includes the Happyland Music Alliance, Writer’s Club, Photographer’s Club, the Ada Shakespeare Group and many more. “I want conversation pieces, that’s where the ‘Conversation’ name comes in. I’m looking for unique items, things that aren’t in other shops,” Ragsdale says. In addition to pieces on consignment and a locally featured artist that rotates out every one to three months, the Emporium also hosts monthly

events. Open Mic Night caters to spoken-word artists and poets, but also features musicians. Other monthly, themed events include a pirate party, a Lego party and a steam punk party. Additional events include fundraisers and workshops, like a PAWS animal shelter furry party or hat-making and sewing classes. “All our events give people an opportunity to step out of their everyday routine and do something different, a little dress-up other than cocktail attire,”

Ragsdale says. Ragsdale's, she says, “is a great place to come and find out what’s happening this week in town, to find local music or other cultural events." Ragsdales Conversation Emporium is open Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to “6ish” and Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. You can find them on Facebook or online at conversationemporium.org.

Tradition Thrives at McSwain Theatre

For over 90 years, the McSwain Theatre has been Ada’s crown

jewel of entertainment with performances from musical all-stars featuring all types of music including country, rock, gospel, oldies and more! Country music star and Ada native, Blake Shelton, first stepped on stage at the McSwain before heading to Nashville. See old-time favorites such as the monthly country music variety show featuring Jae L. Stillwell and the Crossover Band, who also happen to host the Grand Awards Show music competition every year. Muscians from all over compete for awards and prizes during this red carpet event. You can also catch classic movies and recent family friendly favorites on the McSwain’s big screen. The theatre is also equipped to host stage plays, special events and more. The theatre’s unique amenities and second-story gallery will make any gathering grand. Built in 1920 by Ada businessman Foster McSwain, the McSwain went through

extensive renovations in 2002 after the Chickasaw Nation purchased the theatre and began overseeing its operations. The renovations restored the theatre back to a look similar to

its glory days. Visit the McSwain Theatre’s website, mcswaintheatre.com, for more information and a complete list of upcoming shows, movies and events.

DUNCAN

The legendary Chisholm Trail once passed through the mix of rolling prairies, historic

architecture, colorful crape myrtle trees and the southern hospitality-infused town of Duncan. Scotsman William Duncan and his Chickasaw wife, Sally, saw a lucrative opportunity to develop a township when construction of the

Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroads through Duncan was planned. The couple claimed 500 acres of Indian Territory in the path of the railroad and constructed a trading post situated at the intersection of the Chisholm Trail. When the first train arrived in 1892, William and Sally’s aspirations came to life.

For shopping enthusiasts, take a stroll down the historic Main Street and discover vintage trinkets in one

of the many antique shops, such as the Antique Mall of Duncan or Butterfields Antiques. Or shop in style at the Eclectic Echo, Crescent

Moon Clothing or one of Duncan’s southern-chic boutiques. Stop by The Merchant Eatery, Deli and Coffeehouse for unique sandwiches with fresh bread, delicate soups and excellent salads. Many locals frequent the Merchant Eatery for their complete coffee menu to grab an afternoon pick-me-up. Located in Duncan's Fuqua Park, The Rock Island 905 Depot, Museum & Gift Shop features an old Rock Island steam locomotive in addition to an on-site museum and gift shop housed in a replica 1892 train depot. The 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive was originally built by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York, and situated in Fuqua Park in 1954. The old locomotive was coal-fired and could reach top speeds of 100 miles per hour. Come and see this piece of Duncan's proud history and step back to a time when Duncan was the first scheduled stop of the 905 passenger train. Stroll inside the Rock Island 905 Museum and browse fascinating exhibits like dispatcher phones, a dispatcher desk and a variety of communication-themed displays. G-scale model trains run inside the depot and model train exhibits are featured as well.

Waurika, the Jefferson County seat situated on the 98th Meridian which separated the Chickasaw Nation from the Comanche, Kiowa and Apache Reservation, is a Native American name for “clear water.”

LINDSAY

Halfway between Pauls Valley and Chickasha you’ll find Lindsay, an old broomcorn

boomtown, rich in agriculture, tasty opportunities and boutiques. Plan your next historic outing to the Murray-Lindsay Mansion to tour the largest and most ornate house in the western portion of the Chickasaw Nation in the early 1900s featuring fifteen rooms, two baths and four fireplaces. Built in 1882, this historic mansion was the home of Irish immigrant Frank Murray and his Chickasaw wife, Alzira McCaughey.

Stroll the brick Main Street of Lindsay for unique, fashionable finds. Stop in the hip Lime Leopardette for funky blouses, fancy jeans, rocking boots and accessories or The Silver Orchid for Made-In-Oklahoma gifts, home décor, trendy baby clothing and more. For the antique lover, The Antique Collection Lunchroom has antiques, collectibles and vintage furniture. Grab a soup or salad in The Lunchroom if you’re hungry. Top that off with a trip to Heavenly Delights for an old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience. Indulge in many flavors of hand-dipped ice cream cones, floats, malts and shakes. They also offer all-American

favorites like hot dogs, burgers, nachos and more. Grab an afternoon-pick-me-up at Coffee-ville, a retro bistro. Enjoy vintage films and music, antique finds and collectibles or board games while you wait on your coffee order.

Make your way to Legends Vineyard & Winery to indulge in free vineyard tours and wine tastings in a Tuscan-style tasting room, featuring award-winning wines like their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Niagara. Legends is the perfect place to host private events like your next holiday celebration, wedding or murder mystery dinner party. For home-style favorites and a western atmosphere, dine at the Ranch House Restaurant, famous for their country-style cuisine. MARLOW

Only ten miles north of Duncan you’ll find Marlow, a charming community full of wild,

western history and best known for its southern hospitality, unique downtown area and superstar sports. The famous Chisholm Trail once crossed through Marlow, bringing the founding settlers into the area. Stampeding soon became popular here, hence why the town became known as Outlaw Country.

The restaurants in Marlow serve up a flavorful array of multi-cultural cuisine. Guiseppe’s Fine Italian Dining is located in the historic 1911 State National Bank building and offers a rustic atmosphere and candlelit setting. Enjoy authentic Italian bakes and classic dishes like Osso Bucco. Or check out the specialty pizzas, Italian wines and decadent dessert dishes.

Stomp Dances and Stickball Games Historically, stomp dancing has its roots in the Green Corn Ceremony and harvest celebrations. Chickasaws believe that the fire at the center of the dance circle is the embodiment of Aba’ binni’li’ on earth and that the smoke carries prayers to Him. Stickball was originally played as a way to avoid war and settle conflicts. Today, Kapochcha’ to’li’ (or, “Little Brother of War”) is played on a field of roughly about 100 yards with a tall pole in the middle. Points are scored by hitting the pole with the ball. Stickball is and always has been played without protective padding, helmets, and in most cases without shoes. In contemporary stickball games, it is not unusual to see women playing. Stomp dance and stick ball demonstrations can be seen at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, located at 867 Cooper Memorial Dr., Sulphur, Okla. Traditional stomp dances and stickball tournaments also take place at Kullihoma, which is located 10 miles east of Ada, Okla., on Hwy. 1.

Created to celebrate and perpetuate the history, art and culture of the

Chisholm Trail, the American Cowboy and the American West, the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan educates people of all ages on the courage, struggles and successes of settlement in this area. It celebrates the men and women who rode the Trail, settled in the area, were stationed at nearby Ft. Sill and Ft. Arbuckle, started businesses and raised families or were indigenous people forced to drastically change their lifestyles due to encroachment of other travelers and settlers. With smells of the Oklahoma prairie, a windy rainstorm and rumbling hoof beats, the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center’s multi-sensory 4D Experience Theater is a must see. The museum offers an interactive experience for all ages. Throw a rope around a Longhorn steer; ride a bucking bronco or spend some time in the western art gallery. See taxidermied representations of animals the cowboys and settlers would have seen during the

reconstruction and Chisholm Trail periods. Home to one of the finest Western Art collections west of the Mississippi, a surprise awaits when you walk into the Garis Gallery of the American West. The intimate setting opens to an exceptional collection of Western paintings and sculptures. Works by Frederick Remington, George Catlin, Charles Russell, Allan Houser and regional and local artists of note are on display in the permanent collection. Be sure to check out the "On the Chisholm Trail" bronze by

Oklahoma artist Paul Moore. It is the largest bronze dedicated to the Chisholm Trail in the world.
