Musical elements are strong in Lang Toi, with a five-piece band performing on ancient Vietnamese instruments. It is all a unique look at a new form of circus theatre to the rhythms of traditional Vietnamese music. Curtain-up for Lang Toi will be at 8pm on May 12 and 13 at the HKAPA, Lyric Theatre. Tickets are $460, $360, $280 and $180, available at HK Ticketing: 31 288 288. May 13-15 First staged in 1966, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead gets its latest local reincarnation with The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection. The dark existentialist comedy tells the story of two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and their inability to control their destinies, with scenes from the original Hamlet interspersed with the action. This means that some of the major players in Shakespeare’s tragedy take on minor roles here, while two minor fools in Hamlet become the stage’s prime protagonists. It is all part of the upside-down and uncontrollably chaotic world Stoppard creates with this play, in which not only the king, Claudius, has difficulty distinguishing between Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, but they themselves do as well. The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection production is due to travel on a cultural exchange to Shanghai in August this year. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead runs from May 13-15 at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre at 7:30pm, with an additional matinee show on May 15 at 2:30pm. Tickets are $160 and $100 from Urbtix: 2734 9009. May 14-16 The Grimm Brothers’ fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has never before come to life quite like Angelin Preljocaj’s vision of it. This dance master clothes the “innocent” Snow White in something resembling a cross between a robe and a diaper, the wicked queen/witch in a dominatrix outfit and has 26 dancers tell the story through modern dance movement.
