In January 2014, the Provincial Health Services Authority selected Affinity Partnerships – a consortium led by Balfour Beatty and comprising design firms ZGF Architects and CEI Architecture, and construction leads Balfour Beatty and Ledcor – as the team to take on the construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital. Affinity Partnerships has extensive experience in large-scale construction projects, including children’s hospitals, in North America and worldwide.

In May 2014 demolition of the Shaughnessy Building began, clearing the way for construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre, which will begin in the fall of 2014. Services in the current hospital will continue without disruption until 2017, at which time children and families will gain access to the new state-of-the-art hospital, a facility that every British Columbian can feel proud of.

A new era of careConstruction of the existing BC Children’s Hospital began in 1977. Thirty-seven years later, in May 2014, we broke ground for the new Teck Acute Care Centre. Thank you for ensuring children in BC and the Yukon receive the best possible care today, and far into the future.

motivation for volunteering

It’s very important that we give back – the community has been very good to me and my family. It has been a great comfort to know that the support of BC Children’s Hospital is available if needed. I would not have survived were it not for the exceptional care I received in my first six months of life.

In three short years the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital, will open its doors to children and families from across BC and the Yukon. Since 2008 tens of thousands of people – donors and volunteers – have expressed their support for our $200-million Campaign for BC Children, enabling us to meet our commitment to this new building, and to Child Health BC.

Last November we successfully concluded this campaign, the largest health-care- related capital campaign in the province’s history, and today, with the help of over 80,000 people and organizations, we are on track to reach our target – a new hospital in 2017.

This accomplishment is all the more remarkable when we consider that even as we worked to reach our campaign goal, our donors continued to support the ongoing urgent health needs of our patients. Between the campaign launch

in April 2008 and its conclusion in 2013, not only did you, our donors, contribute $200 million to the campaign, you also made it possible for us to provide an additional $270 million to BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the research institute during that period. The impact of your donations is both immediate and far-reaching.

In our fiscal year ended March 31, 2014, 118,833 people made gifts to BC Children’s Hospital. You helped to maintain excellence in care by supporting everything from our capital campaign and research programs, which are focused on better understanding childhood illnesses and developing better treatments and even cures, to the purchase of equipment that enables safer treatments for children, education initiatives for staff and families, and a variety of clinical programs within the hospital. Thanks to you our foundation provided a total of $64.5 million in grants and contributions to the hospital, Sunny Hill and the research

weekday home to 49 infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Their parents – staff at the hospital – can focus on caring for sick and injured children knowing that their own children are being well cared for nearby.

Much of the change your gifts bring about is less obvious than a new building. So we ask, as you flip through the pages of this report, that you keep in mind that, no matter how you choose to support the hospital, you are making a profound difference in the lives of tens of thousands of children in BC and the Yukon every single day.

Thank you for your support.

institute in the fiscal year. As always, we worked hard to ensure your donations are used as intended and maintained a cost of fundraising of just under 19 per cent. Further information on the year’s finances and use of funds is available on pages 46–48.

The impact of your gifts is evident across the three facilities our foundation supports and, most importantly, is reflected in the many stories our patients and their families share throughout the year and during our annual Miracle Weekend celebration. These families are grateful for the foresight you show when you support the hospital, and each of them can see the direct correlation between your generosity and the excellent care they received. With 85,397 children making 230,401 visits in 2013, that’s a lot of gratitude!

As the BC Children’s Hospital site undergoes significant change in the months ahead, the impact of your generosity will be even harder to miss. One early example of that transformation is the Djavad Mowafaghian Child Care Centre, which opened on the site at the end of April and is now the

We launched our $200-million capital campaign, the Campaign for BC Children, in April 2008 and within a year we knew that we had a tough road ahead of us. In our 2008-09 annual report, after an exceptionally challenging first year of the campaign, I wrote: “Even as financial storms raged, we held on to the belief that our goal was attainable, that future generations of BC children would have a state-of-the-art facility ready for them should the need arise… We knew that we had no choice but to continue. This is not a project that can be dismissed. So great is the need.”

Challenging though it was, we were right to persevere. In the fall of 2014, the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital, will begin to rise on the hospital site. And just three years later, in 2017, the doors will open to patients, ushering in a new era in pediatric care in British Columbia. Fortunately we don’t have to wait for the opening of the new building to witness the transformation in care that our campaign has helped to bring about – Child Health BC is already having an impact on the lives of children and families across the province. Thanks to Child Health BC’s lead benefactor Save-On-Foods and other donors, thousands of children are receiving the specialized care they need closer to home, and caregivers across the province are taking advantage of new resources designed to help them treat children.

This was truly a remarkable year. Donors from across the province and the Yukon contributed $24 million, enabling us to declare the $200-million campaign success-ful in November. Among the donors who came forward in the past year were several who made commitments of $1 million or more. These included Syd and Joanne Belzberg, Sylvia Chen and family, Asa and Kashmir Johal and family, Peter Hoy, the McCall MacBain Foundation, the Mining4Life Charity Challenge, John and Dana Montalbano, the Skidmore family, Lili Song, Arran and Ratana Stephens, and Windsor Plywood Foundation. Over the life of the campaign a total of 80,676 individuals and organizations made donations. This widespread generosity reflects public sentiment that children need and deserve our help.

A campaign of this magnitude cannot succeed without the commitment of both donors and volunteers. A great many people helped us reach our goal. My job, as campaign chair, was made easier by

the tremendous commitment of our Campaign Leadership Cabinet: Kevin Bent, Graeme Currie, Douglas Gordon, Lisa Hudson, Graham MacLachlan and David Podmore. I am indebted to them and many other volunteers for their help, and remain immensely grateful to you, our donors, for putting children first.

Thank you for supporting the Campaign for BC Children.

Twice the size of the existing BC Children’s Hospital, the Teck Acute Care Centre will be a remarkable facility in which children will receive the very best in pediatric care.

After going through a rigorous planning exercise, which included the creation of full-size mockups of hospital floors before construction began, the project team is confident that the Teck Acute Care Centre’s design reflects the input of all users of the hospital and, importantly, will meet patients’ and their families’ evolving needs.

When complete in 2017, the Teck Acute Care Centre will not only be revered for its role in facilitating the delivery of top-notch health care, it will also be an architectural marvel and model for other children’s hospitals.

Nature is the main inspiration for the Teck Acute Care Centre. The colours used in the building’s facade reflect those of the forest, and signify rebirth and regeneration. The lower levels – referred to as the “forest floors” – use reds, browns and purples; mid-levels use yellows and greens to represent the canopy of trees; and higher levels use blue to represent the sky and horizon.

Beyond vibrant colours, other features of the new BC Children’s Hospital grounds offer visitors plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air and greenery. There is an outdoor play area for children and an open-air plaza near the lobby. Several gardens – two of which are funded by anonymous donors – can be found around the site and within the Teck Acute Care Centre. In April 2014 we celebrated the opening of The Djavad Mowafaghian Child Care Centre on the hospital site. This is the second new structure to open as part of Phase 1 of site redevelopment, following the September 2012 opening of the Clinical Support Building, which now houses numerous programs relocated from the Shaughnessy Building.

Made possible by a generous $4-million contribution from Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian, the child care centre provides a safe and engaging place for children of hospital staff to learn and play.

A reflection of Dr. Mowafaghian’s love of children, the centre enables medical staff to deliver their best care and attention to hospital patients, knowing that their own children are cared for and close by.

Children in communities across the province have better access than ever to the high-quality, specialized care they need and deserve thanks to Child Health BC. Supported with a $20-million pledge by lead benefactor Save-On-Foods, a part of the Overwaitea Food Group, Child Health BC is dedicated to giving BC’s children better access to health care and, whenever possible, bringing that care closer to their home communities.

In the past few years, Child Health BC has worked with its provincial partners – including representatives from each of the province’s health authorities and several government ministries – to create and implement standards of care provincewide; fund the expansion and/or construction of pediatric health facilities in various BC communities; promote the use of technology, such as video-conferencing, to connect caregivers and patients living in remote communities with specialists at BC Children’s Hospital, and more.

As a result, more and more children and families are getting the ongoing care they need from BC Children’s Hospital staff or their local health specialists – when they need it, where they need it.

Opening of Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency DepartmentIn October 2013 Surrey Memorial Hospital opened a new Pediatric Emergency Department, supported by a $5-million contribution from Child Health BC. Like BC Children’s Emergency, the department is open 24-7 and is completely dedicated to treating children. Of Child Health BC’s contribution, $3 million is designated toward the department’s capital expenses; $1 million is for training and quality initiatives involving BC Children’s and Surrey Memorial’s Emergency staff; and $1 million is used to build pediatric care capacity in the region. Since its opening, the department has seen its daily average visits jump by 43 per cent – from 53 to 76. From October 2013 to February 2014, a total of 11,478 kids visited at the department, giving families living in the Fraser Valley easier access to emergency care.

Making schools a safer place for children with diabetesDiabetes is a chronic and complex disease that affects about 250,000 British Columbi-ans. Since children and youth with diabetes spend an average of seven hours a day at school, it is important to ensure their safety while there. Recognizing the need to address this issue, Child Health BC organized a collaborative provincial process and wrote a report providing the evidence, care elements and competencies required for diabetes care in schools. In response to this report, the ministries of Health, Education, and Children and Family Development determined that students with diabetes should have extra support during school hours. As of January 2014, health authorities began training designat-ed school staff in the administration of glucagon as an emergency response to severe hypoglycemia – for when a child’s blood sugar drops to a dangerously low level. Thanks to Child Health BC, families of children with diabetes across BC have more peace of mind, knowing that critical, timely care is available to their kids in school.

The Excellence in Child Health Fund supports breakthrough research, the purchase of life-saving equipment and technology, and caregiver education at BC Children’s Hospital, the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children.

Miracle Weekend dollars and other undesignated donations support excellence at these three facilities, ensuring that the most urgent health needs of BC’s children are met. Here are a few examples of how your support made a difference last year.

EXCELLENCE IN CHILD HEALTH

Diabetes The immune system affects all aspects of a child’s health. When the system backfires or attacks itself, it can result in a lifelong condition like diabetes that requires daily therapy and monitoring.

Diabetes is an incurable disease that is on the rise in children. About 130 children are diagnosed with this condition in BC every year. Donations help to ensure all British Columbian children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes get the care they need at our hospital. In 2013-14, the Diabetes, Nutrition & Metabolism research program received $1,248,000 in funding from donors.

Researchers and clinicians, like Dr. Bruce Verchere, head of the Diabetes Research Program at BC Children’s, are working to find a cure. Dr. Verchere, together with team members Dr. Francis Lynn and Dr. Megan Levings, are looking at ways to protect islet cells – the cells that produce insulin – from attack by the patient’s immune system, make new insulin-producing cells for transplantation, and manipulate the way cells respond so that children with type 1 diabetes will accept the transplanted cells. The team is hopeful that today’s research will yield a cure in our lifetime.

Equipment Specialized medical equipment serves as an essential extension of our caregivers’ skills in caring for patients. It enables caregivers to have an accurate reading of a child’s vital signs, like blood pressure and amount of oxygen received, and to perform minimally invasive surgeries that require the utmost precision.

In 2013-14, donors to the Excellence in Child Health Fund helped to purchase many pieces of equipment. Among these was a transonic monitor, which helps to reduce complications for kids requiring dialysis. The equipment allows caregivers to track blood flow in the veins and arteries used for dial-ysis, minimizing the risk that these “access sites” are lost due to narrowing or blood clots, which can form suddenly. Preserving vascular access sites is important because each person only has a finite number of these sites. For a child who may need dialy-sis or a kidney transplant more than once to survive, this device is particularly critical to the quality of their lifelong care.

Breaking a bone was almost a daily occurrence for Faris Abdulwahab. When his mother Liza was six months pregnant, doctors diagnosed Faris with a genetic disorder commonly known as brittle bone disease, for which there is currently no cure.

Faris’ first encounter with broken bones was on the day he was born – he suffered several bone fractures and was not expected to live. But two doctors at BC Children’s Hospital believed there was treatment that could save Faris. Their perseverance and Faris’ strong will paid off – today 10-year-old Faris is the light and joy of his family.

Faris was the first child with his condition to have metal rods put in his legs to support his weight and prevent fractures – a treatment traditionally used to treat elderly people with osteoporosis. To grow stronger bones, Faris also takes a medication usually prescribed for menopaus-al women fighting osteoporosis.

Despite all the challenges he faces the chatty youngster has always remained positive. From a young age, he dreamed of being an entertainer – so far, Faris has recorded a few songs in the studio and has done a voice-over for a kids’ TV show under his stage name, Freeze.

Thanks to the care he receives at BC Children’s, Faris’ condition is improving every day. He has had a lot less bone fractures in recent years – a welcome change from when they used to happen, in Faris’ words, “24-7.”

“I want to live my life to the fullest by doing what I like to do and contribute my talents to the world,” Faris says.

“I believe that even with my disabilities, nothing can stop me from achieving my goal. I want to be an inspiration to children with disabilities.”

$625,000 went toward funding clinical fellowships to train the next generation of pediatric subspecialists in more than a dozen areas of care at the hospital. In 2013–14, these included:

Pediatric Radiology Pediatric Neurosurgery Pediatric Palliative Care Orthopedic Surgery Pediatric Dentistry Psychology

After 15 years of research, studies led by Dr. Kirk Schultz have resulted in the international approval of imatinib, a drug that more than doubles survival, from 25 per cent to about 70 per cent, when used with chemotherapy for children with a type of high-risk leukemia. It is one of the biggest improvements in the treatment of a type of childhood cancer in the 21st century.

225 studies conducted over the past quarter century has helped to establish guidelines for influenza, chicken pox, whooping cough, HPV inoculations and more.

Vaccine research shows that two doses of the HPV vaccine in girls can be as effective as three, making it more accessible and affordable.

Cancer Care & Research Last year, 142 children newly diagnosed with cancer sought care at BC Children’s Hospital, the only place in the province where they can have a cancer treatment plan devised. Over 700 cancer patients received active inpatient treatment and made 9,136 outpatient visits to the hospital’s Oncology, Hematology and Hemophilia Clinics in 2013. Your support ensures these children continue to benefit from some of the highest cancer survival rates in Canada. Childhood cancer and blood disorder research received $2,300,000 in donor funding.

Dr. Kirk Schultz is the national leader of the ABLE study, which is looking into biomarkers that could indicate which children may develop graft-versus-host disease after a bone marrow transplant, renal toxicity due to the anti-cancer drug cisplatin, and understanding who may be at risk of blood clots during cancer treatment. Dr. Rod Rassekh is leading the portion of the study that aims to predict which children are at risk of developing hearing loss as a side effect of their cancer treatment. And CFRI researcher Dr. Christopher Maxwell is improving the lives of children by studying how brain cells grow and how healthy cell division can be maintained in children receiving brain tumour treatment.

Cardiac Sciences Last year, over 400 babies were born in BC with heart conditions and BC Children’s Hospital received 9,875 visits from children requiring cardiac care. Our specialists performed 300 cardiac operations, over two-thirds of which were open-heart procedures.

Your donations help to support the stellar cardiothoracic surgery team at BC Children’s, led by Dr. Sanjiv Gandhi, that provided the expertise required to create Western Canada’s second pediatric heart transplant program at BC Children’s Hospital. The fully sanctioned program was announced in October 2013, just one year after Dr. Gandhi performed his second heart transplant in BC.

Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children is responsible for specialized child develop-ment and rehabilitation services in BC. As part of BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill sees children from across the province with conditions that affect their growth and development, including cerebral palsy, brain injuries, autism, hearing impairments and more. In 2013-14, a total of $1,181,000 went to support the needs of children and families at Sunny Hill, including research, education, technology and equipment, and patient comfort. These initiatives ranged from compassion-ate care for children, such as outings and recreational activities for special occasions like birthdays and holidays, to the use of robotics to help children participate in activities and therapy, and virtual reality to motivate children with neuromotor conditions to stay engaged with therapeutic exercise programs.

Emily was not expected to survive past birth. She was born with a major abdominal defect and seven organs outside of her body. She underwent her first surgery when she was just four hours old. Her mother Marie thought she would never see her baby girl again.

During an eight-and-a-half hour operation, surgeons at BC Children’s Hospital successfully put two of Emily’s organs back inside her body. A tremendous challenge lay ahead. Faced with the fragile infant’s high risk of infection, the team of specialists raced against time as they complet-ed several additional surgeries to make room in her abdominal cavity for the remaining organs. By the time Emily was seven days old her doctors had completed their work. At the time, she weighed less than five pounds. After 15 years, Marie still remembers these events as if they happened yesterday. She’s particularly grateful for Emily’s chief surgeon, Dr. Geoff Blair, who continues to go above and beyond for her daughter. “Dr. Blair flew in from San Francisco the day Emily was born so he could be here in time for the surgery,” she says. “We wanted to find a surgeon who believed in Emily and, after talking to Dr. Blair, we knew he was the one.”

While compassionate, Dr. Blair was always upfront with the family about the massive challenges Emily faced. At one point, he told Marie that Emily could have developed any of 5,000 different anomalies because her condition affects so many of her organs. Emily’s recovery is by far the best he’s seen for anyone with her condition. Today Emily must still deal with substantial hearing loss and minor kidney problems, but that she faces only these challenges is a true wonder given her perilous start.

The successful push to conclude our capital campaign and solid annual fundrais-ing programs led to another strong perfor-mance and an increase in total consolidated revenues in the 2013-14 fiscal year, ended March 31, 2014. Total consolidated revenues, including lotteries and investments, were $92.2 million in 2013-14, up slightly from $91.9 million in the year prior.

We achieved this thanks to a consistent performance in fundraising, an increase in investment income of $1.8 million over the prior year to $12.7 million, and an increase in net revenue from our two lotteries – the Choices Lottery and the Dream Lottery. Net lottery revenue increased by $1,232,989 to $6.6 million due to strong sales in both lotteries. Pro-ceeds from the lotteries support research programs at BC Children’s Hospital.

In November 2013 we announced the conclusion of our $200-million capital campaign, the Campaign for BC Children. Between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014, donors contributed $24 million to the campaign, which is supporting the construc-tion of the new BC Children’s Hospital and Child Health BC.

Miracle Weekend revenue, announced in June 2013, increased to $18,353,580 in 2013-14. Foundation events including ChildRun, Jeans Day™ and the Chinese-Canadian Miracle Weekend each raised over $1 million, while the Banks Division and Retail & Wholesale Division raised $2.2 million and $5.7 million, respectively, and Mining for Miracles brought in $1.6 million.

The flow of campaign pledge payments will support major gift revenue to some extent in 2014-15, but we may see a slight drop in major gift revenue and in total consolidated revenue in the first fiscal year beyond the campaign. Even so, we anticipate another strong year and we maintain our focus on ensuring we meet the needs of the children who benefit from services provided by BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill and the research institute.

WAYS OF GIVINGThere are many ways to make a gift to benefit BC’s kids.

Bequest in Your WillA bequest is a direction in your will that a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a portion of the estate is to be given to British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital Foundation (our legal name). A bequest made to the foundation generates a tax credit that offsets the tax otherwise payable on up to 100 per cent of your net income in the year of death. Unused credits can be carried back one year. These credits may result in significant income tax savings and increase your net estate.

Life InsuranceYou can make BC Children’s Hospital Foundation the beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy. Giving life insurance is a way of making a significant gift without depleting your estate. At the end of your lifetime, the policy proceeds will be paid by the insurance company directly to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Depending on how the policy is structured, you may receive a tax benefit during your lifetime or your estate will receive the benefit.

Publicly Traded SecuritiesDonating securities is an effective way to give. If you own publicly traded securities that have increased in value and you decide to sell them, 50 per cent of the capital gain is taxable. However, if you donate these securities “in kind” to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, no tax is payable on the capital gain. The resulting tax credit from the donation of the securities will reduce taxes payable on other income. Making a gift of publicly traded securities is easy to do. Please contact us for a transfer form to facilitate the process.

RRSP/RRIFYou can name BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as the direct beneficiary of the proceeds of your RRSP or RRIF, or you can make a gift of the proceeds from your RRSP or RRIF to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in your will. The resulting tax credit may be used to offset the tax payable on the redemption of the proceeds of the retirement plan.

PledgesOur pledge program offers you a convenient method of making contributions. The program allows you to spread your contribution over three to five years, usually commencing the year the pledge is made. You will receive full recognition for the value of your contribution as soon as the commitment is made.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is a registered Canadian charity and issues tax receipts for all donations. Tax credits generated by donations can offset tax otherwise payable on up to 75 per cent of your net income in the year of the gift. Any unused tax credits may be carried forward and used to offset taxes over the following five years.
