President’s ReportBy Jim Moon, BCAA President

A midsummer hello from the BC Angus Association,

COVID-19 has presented many challenges to our industry, and we have all had to make some adjustments over the past few months. We are pleased to announce that in fact, the doors are still open at our office and we are here to serve you.

As most know, the two BC Angus Gold shows have been cancelled, one at the IPE and the other at the Lakes District Fair. I recommend that you to check their websites for additional information you may require.

Amidst all of the daily, and often repetitive information regarding COVID-19, the farm and our cattle offer a sense of normality. For those who may be somewhat less than thrilled with the spring bull sale results and feeling dismayed, I would like to encourage you that persistence pays off, and cattle ranchers continue to show resilience. People still like to eat beef, so hopefully the beef industry will go on an uptick post-pandemic. Hang in there, we are all in this together.

I would like to take this time thank Joanne Cook for her generous heifer donation this year in loving memory of Royce Cook. Please contact any of the board members for further information.

I would also like to congratulate BC Junior Angus member, Sarah McDonald on being awarded the BC Angus scholarship this year.

I invite you to join us in Kamloops on September 26, 2020 for our AGM, which will be set up to accommodate physical distancing.

Sincerely,Jim Moon, President

B.C. Junior Angus ReportSarah MacDonald, BCJAA President and CJAA Director

Greetings everyone! I hope this finds you in good spirits! This spring has brought much rain to our typically dry area in southern BC, making the Boundary-Okanagan greener than most years. The cows are certainly happy and sassy out on range! I hope the weather has co-operated in your neck of the woods, as well!

As you may be aware, many of our industry events have been cancelled or continued in a different fashion due to Covid-19. Unfortunately, the BC Junior Angus Association has decided to cancel both Northern and Southern Experience Field Days until next year. That being said, the BCJAA Executive strives to provide continuous learning opportunities to Angus Juniors despite the changes. Agriculture industry professionals have created brief videos regarding various topics within agriculture. These videos will be posted to Instagram (@bc_junior_angus) and Facebook in June and August. Each video includes a trivia question and opportunities for Juniors to win prizes while learning! As well, the BCJAA Virtual Steer & Heifer Show will be open from July 1-10, 2020 for Juniors to enter. Further details are available on a BC Junior Angus Association social media page.

The Canadian Junior Angus Association has made the difficult decision to cancel Showdown 2020. On behalf of CJAA, I would like to thank those that had sponsored Showdown prior to the cancellation, and those that may have considered sponsoring. Your continuous support is truly appreciated! Next year’s Showdown location will remain the same as planned for this year, so I hope to see lots of BC Juniors is Brandon, MB next July! In place of Showdown this year the CJAA is offering the Showdown Online Challenge. During the original dates set for Showdown, July 20-25, 2020, competitions will run on Instagram (@canadianjuniorangus) and Facebook. Competition categories include creation of a 2021 GOAL or Showdown Ad, Photography, and CJAA Knowledge Trivia. I encourage Juniors to check in and participate daily as each day offers another opportunity to win gift cards, 2021 GOAL or Showdown registration, or a CAF Heifer Voucher! Check out a Canadian Junior Angus social media page for further details.

I am truly saddened by the cancellation of these events as I, like many other Angus Juniors, look forward to reconnecting and meeting new faces each year. However, I have no doubt that the agriculture industry will persevere and our Junior members will gain much from these adversities. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at 250-444-9317 or [email protected] . Wishing everyone an enjoyable and successful summer of haying, managing cows, and hopefully, few sunburns! See you down the road!

The BC Juniors will be having a

Virtual AGM, Saturday September 19thKeep an eye on Facebook, Instagram, and your email for more information!

Herd Disperal AnnouncementJohnny ApplebyWe are now living in a new reality . Most of our communication is being done via the internet or some other electronic means. Stay in touch, be safe, the world will get better .

After nearly 40 years of raising Angus Cattle, I have decided it’s time to slow down a bit and enjoy life a little more, so I will be selling my herd of registered bred cows. I will be still be involved with the promotion of the breed and the BC Angus Association. I wish everybody success in the cattle business . We hope to spend more time at our second home in Costa Rica .

Johnny

Business Development Report

BC Angus 2020 AGM

Brian G Good, Director of Business Development, British Columbia and Alberta

September 26, 2020

As everyone knows, this spring had more challenges than usual. Bull sales were probably better in most cases than expected although it took some trial and error to get through them. Thank you everyone for your support.

I have talked to a number of producers, both purebred and commercial, and most everyone is looking forward to the fall run and calves arriving this spring from some new genetics used in their breeding programs.

Here is a listing for feeder sale dates in BC for this fall:1. Kamloops: October 13, November 32. Williams Lake: October 143. Vanderhoof: October 16 Presort4. OK Falls: October 19, November 25. Dawson Creek: October 16, October 27

I would highly recommend attending a sale or two if possible, and touch base with your important commercial customers! Better yet, let them know the sale dates to get the calves booked in and Canadian Angus Indicators (Tags) put in before sale time.

If restrictions are lifted and travel resumes, I hope to attend some of the fall sales and visit some ranches.

All the best! Take care and be safe!Brian G Good, Director of Business Development, British Columbia and Alberta

BC Angus Scholarship Award

Donna Mills, BC Angus Director

Recipient, Sarh MacDonald

I am always thrilled to read the applications for the BC Angus Scholarship Award. This year 2020 was no different.  All applicants have come up through the 4H Program and have been volunteers in  BC Junior Angus.  Besides all being dedicated to their family farms and our Angus Breed they all seem like really great people. I believe that in itself is important and will take them very far in life. So congratulations to the all applicants that applied.

In 2016 this years winner attended Beef it up in Barriere BC,  which launched her passion for the Angus Industry. Some of her accolades are: implementing an online herd management program for her family farm, breeding a small herd of Angus  cattle, past Vice President and current President of the BC Junior Angus, current  BC Director for the Canadian Junior Angus Association. She also has received various awards in the industry, as well as having great marks.  It is my pleasure to announce this years 2020 BC Angus Scholarship to applicant-_Sarah MacDonald from Rock Creek BC.

Congratulations Sarah and best wishes in the future.

Greetings! My name is Sarah MacDonald and I am 19 years old. I grew up in Rock Creek, BC, nestled between the Okanagan Valley and Kootenay Mountains, where my family and I raise commercial Angus cattle. Along with my two brothers, I am beginning to grow my purebred herd as well. In the fall I will be entering my second year in the Crop Technology diploma program at Lakeland College, with plans of continuing my education in agriculture after. Eventually, I hope to have a career that combines my loves for cattle, crops and agricultural advocacy! In my spare time I enjoy riding horses, showing cattle, and snowboarding. I am currently in my tenth year with the Boundary “C” 4-H Club. As well, I am the President of the BC Junior Angus Association and the British Columbia Director of the Canadian Junior Angus Association. I love being part of Junior Angus organizations because I get to travel across the country, meet new people and have meaningful conversations about the cattle industry! I am so grateful to be awarded the 2020 BC Angus Association Scholarship. The BC Angus Association has always valued helping Angus juniors succeed and I am incredibly blessed to receive their award this year!
