Executive InstituteLeadership Summit

Special Focus Seminars

Separately Bookable

Tuesday 26th October 2010

Chaired by:George Nazi,President, 21CN, Global Networks& Computing Infrastructure,BT

This private invitation-only gathering of senior-level executives will discuss the keythemes around opportunities and challenges presented by next generation broadbandand content delivery, both fixed and mobile. Held to Chatham House rules, allowingfree and open discussion, the event is a unique opportunity for Executives to debatesome of today’s most critical issue with their international peers.

Key Sub Themes include:

• The increasing availability of ever higher speed broadband services, delivered over both copper and fibre in the fixed linemarket and over 3G mobile networks promises economic and social benefits both nationally and regionally

• However, making these services available requires the industry to make fresh capital investments at a time when theglobal capital markets are difficult and business cases challenging for rollout to less densely populated markets.

• At the same time as next generation broadband becomes more widely available, the consumption of digital content overthese networks increases exponentially, posing a commercial challenge for service providers - Operating costs also rise asbackhaul costs rise. Without the business models changing, eventually the existing business model for the provider will break.

• How can ISP’s need respond to the next generation broadband opportunity and challenge?

• What is the investment case (the public versus private funding debate).

• How can the industry meet the challenges and what new business models can be developed to maximise return on investment?

• How do you maximise the economic benefit?

Service Delivery Platform EvolutionRevolution, Convolution, Amalgamation,Elimination or Virtualization?

Examining the impact the confluence of several criticaltechnologies / developments have on the SDP such as: cloudcomputing / managed services; and open initiatives such asJoint Innovation Labs, GSMA’s OneAPI, OMTP’s BONDI, OpenIPTV Forum, and OSGi (Open Services Gateway initiative).Reviewing key trends in operators’ requirements and theircompetitive environment as web and telco converge. Present aview on the current and likely future evolution of the SDP: will itchange, get more complex, will silos finally consolidate, or will itsimply go away?

14.30 Chairman’s IntroductionAlan Quayle, CEO,Business and Service Development

14.35 Verizon's SDP ExperienceVerizon is the leading converged operator with one of thelargest IPTV deployments in the world of 3M subscribersin Q1 2010, and a mobile customer based of 93Mcustomers. Their Service Delivery Ecosystem (SDE) isfundamental to Verizon’s vision of services availableacross all its networks. Verizon’s service vision results incustomers considering their services as independent of aparticular device and network: whether it be mobile, broadband or legacy networks. Services will be able toaccess common and shared infrastructure such as anidentity management framework; finally removing multiplelogons and conflicting security settings which plaguemost multiplatform services today.Mark Hahn, Principal Member of Technical Staff,Verizon, USA

14.55 KPN's SDP ExperienceKPN vision is to provide services to any device on anynetwork at anytime. Eventually, it moves to “Everything-is-a-Service” model. From a user perspective consistent,on-par (Apple setting the bar) UX is one of the mostimportant buying (and usage) motivation. Customersatisfaction efforts demand co-operation/partnership withothers in the value chain, among which are (independent)developers, VARs, users, verticals, etc. Hence, serviceswill encompass assets and capabilities from manydifferent sources. Critical for this paradigm isfulfillment(including activation, registration, log-on),assurance and billing.Colin Pons, Senior Strategy & Business Analyst,KPN, Netherlands

15.15 Panel Discussion: SDP Evolution• Discussion of issues raised in the the presentations

with the audience.• Are SDPs relevant in a web-centric delivery model?• Will the multiple SDP silos across mobile, IPTV, legacy

and broadband converge?• Are there gaps in the current standards?Mark Hahn, Principal Member of Technical Staff,VerizonColin Pons, Senior Strategy & Business Analyst,KPNLucia Gradinariu, Chief Market Strategist,Consumer Software and Services,Huawei Software CompanyTy Wang, Senior Director, Oracle CommunicationsBusiness Unit, Oracle

On-boarding Developers for AppsandOpen APIs at Scale

Service Providers are rapidly launching new business models andservices for third-party applications and open API services acrosscommunications and cloud computing for mobile, TV, andenterprise IT sectors. For these business models to besuccessful, new service provider capabilities must effectivelyattract many developers, get them on-boarded, support technicalintegration and API usage, and make sense financially to allparties. A competitive developer experience across an operator’splatform, processes, and partners is vital for monetizing thesenew open API services and for attracting a large inventory of appsfor publishing to downstream subscribers.

From the Dusk of IPv4 Towards theDawn of IPv6 – Being Prepared forthe TransitionRecent predictions estimate the IPv4 address exhaustion in lessthan 18 months since now. This situation is aggravated by thelikelihood that there will be no significant adoption of IPv6 untilIPv4 exhaustion occurs.

IPv6 creates a new dimension to the problems and issues whichoperators have to resolve across all layers of the network. If nothandled properly, it could jeopardize their dreams to continuouslyenable more devices to be connected to the network. Networkoperators bear the heaviest burden among all stakeholders totackle the IPv4 address shortage, facilitate the adoption of IPv6,and ensure the co-existence and interworking of IPv4 and IPv6networks.

The transition mechanisms to IPv6 for both fixed and mobilenetworks are recently being studied in both IETF and 3GPPorganizations. However, the lack of mature standards, consensusand well agreed upon transition mechanisms is also a cause ofconcern among the operator community.

In this panel, we invite the experts and key technical decisionmakers from operators to highlight the pressing technical issues, share their insights and considerations surrounding this topic.

SESSION THREE:

Mobile Broadband is RealityWhat are the Impacts to Mobile Backhaul?

Mobile broadband is reality – present networks enable substantialincrease of the end user bandwidth and the first LTE deploymentshave started. The average bandwidth to be transported from thebase station is increasing substantially. LTE will also offer the lowestlatency compared to all technologies. Bandwidth and lowestlatency together will make the difference in end user perceivedperformance. For these evolutions in the radio interface to bear fruit, the mobile backhaul transport infrastructure has to evolve.
