The  American  School  of  Tangier      “I laid down the staff of travel in his glorious land, having assured myself after unbiased [sic] consideration that it is the best of countries, for in it fruits are plentiful, and running water and nourishing food are never exhausted. Few indeed are the lands, which unite all these advantages, and well spoken are the poet's words:

"Of all the lands the West by this token's the best: Here the full moon is spied and the sun speeds to rest."

(Ibn Battuta, on his return to Morocco in 1349)

The above passage was written after Ibn Battuta’s legendary trip throughout the then-known Islamic world, and even today these words reflect the richness and potential of Morocco. For centuries Tangier has served as the gateway to Morocco and North Africa, as its position on the Straits of Gibraltar makes it a border town, an outpost, and a very special mix of culture and character unlike any other place.

The American School of Tangier, opening in 1950 when Tangier was internationally administered, reflects a diversity of spirit consistent with that of its location. Founded on principles of excellence, inclusion, and curiosity, AST has attracted families who appreciate this spirit and who wish to have their children exposed to an approach, which will foster and develop it. The curriculum is American in character and is designed to promote independent thinking, creativity, and a sense of responsibility that extends beyond the student to the school and to Tangier. At the heart of it all is a multi-national faculty who are committed to doing the very best for the children in their charge.
