This month at the
Balmoral Early
Learning Centre
For the month of February at the Balmoral Early Learning Centre,
the children have been busily making new friends and happily
engaging in social interactions as we have now welcomed three
new families to our humble centre. The children have been
learning all about frogs; what they eat, where they live and other
interesting facts after opening up the centre one morning to find
a few frogs hiding around the room! The children were very
interested in the frogs and spent quite awhile watching them
jump around in the bucket. Dress-ups have been another interest
of the children’s this month, so we decided to bring out a clothes
stand to hang all the dress ups on. That way the children can
choose what they want to wear at anytime of the day. By being
able to choose what dress-ups to wear and what they want to
play, the children are able to build a strong identity giving them
independence, self-confidence and a sense of agency.
On Monday the 20th of February, the centre had its first off-site
evacuation drill for the year. Firstly, I spoke to the children in a
group time to refresh their memories about what happens during
an evacuation drill. The children all listened intently and when it
came time to complete the drill the children all evacuated the
building in a calm and orderly fashion not letting go of the red
rope that we all must hold onto. All staff were very proud of the
children as they did an excellent job completing the drill safely.
For the next few weeks, The Balmoral Early Learning Centre will be
learning about all the colours. If any families have any donations
they would like to contribute to the centre regarding our
“colours” theme please let us know!

important to us. If you have
a complaint, compliment,

urge you to let us know.

Our new strategic plan is the result of consultation and team work by the Board
and staff. It is based on grass roots community knowledge and a realistic vision
of what is ahead in health care.
Our focus is on continued and measurable clinical governance and safety.
Other key priorities are linking with and knowing our local community and
strategic sourcing of funding.
The first steps are for us to define what quality and safety looks like at our service
and client feedback will be key in this process. Please join us as we adopt and
pursue this plan so we can continue to deliver the services you know and
expect from your local health care facility.
Our new plan can be found on our website, we will circulate it via social media
or pop in and pick one up from the front desk. We will be at the Balmoral Show
on the 18th of March with our men’s
shed stall and our nurses will be there
undertaking health assessments. Pop
in and say “hello”. We would love to
discuss the new plan with you then.

The National Shingles
Vaccination Program
A vaccine to prevent the shingles infection will be available to
70-year-olds free of charge.
A single catch up dose will be funded for 71-79 year olds
until 2021.
Shingles is a painful blistering rash caused by the same virus
that causes chickenpox.
As a person gets older the risk of developing shingles and
complications increase.
One in three people will develop shingles in their lifetime.
Vaccination is still recommended for those who have had shingles in
the past, however you should wait at least a year between an
episode of shingles and the vaccine.
Please contact the BBNC on 5570 1304 if you would like more
information regarding this vaccination.

Planned Activity Group We had a Movie afternoon and
watched “Brooklyn” Two countries,
two loves, one heart.
In late 1951, Eilis Lacey, a young Irish
girl, emigrates to Brooklyn. Sponsored
by Father Flood, she is assured to find
a full-time job there. She
nevertheless manages to find her
footing by adapting to her job as a
salesgirl, by studying bookkeeping at
Brooklyn College. Not only does
graduation follow but love shows its
face in Tony, an Italian-American
plumber, full of adoration and
respect for her. They end up
marrying, although keeping the thing
secret. It is at that point that tragedy
strikes inciting Eilis to return to
Enniscorthy to support her mother.
Morally, she must choose between
two countries and the lives that exist
within.
Quiz’s, Crossword’s & word searches
filled in another afternoon. There
were lots of talking and large
discussions about the old man emu,
the World’s second-largest living bird.
The emu can sprint up to 70Km per
hour and can swim across
fast-flowing rivers. Emus can survive
above the snowline and out in the
desert.
Guest speaker Louise Le Nay spoke
about the importance of Bushfire
Safety. We were asked to consider
who we think would benefit from fire
safety information. To help support
the community we will be
conducting a pass the parcel which
will conatin more information within.
Parcels will be tracked as they move
around.
Craft under the guidance of Betty
was Decoupage—from the French
word découper, meaning to cut
out—is a craft or art form that entails
pasting cut-outs (typically
paper) to an object and then
covering them with several coats of
varnish or lacquer.
To complete the month we have our
special guest Heather Napier to talk
about her world travels.
Men’s Shed members have been
very busy getting ready for the show
again this year. Lots of work goes into
getting the show project ready for
the children on show day.

Swimming with the Stars With the days getting shorter and the start of Autumn upon us it is the end of another
wonderful aquatic exercise program. Over the 7 weeks we’ve had many laughs,
met new friends and enjoyed one another’s company all at the same time exercising.
The weather has been extremely kind, very rarely not giving us the motivation
to get in and have a paddle.
This year we welcomed our awesome lifeguard, Sheree McPhee who kept a very
watchful eye on all of us making sure we didn't get too carried away in the water.
Lifeguard, DJ (music coordinator), move demonstrator are just a few of the roles that
this woman took on so a huge thanks must go to Sheree for volunteering her time
to help make this year another successful season.
Thanks to the Balmoral and District Swimming Pool
Committee for overseeing this fantastic facility
which allows the people of our region the opportunity
to utilise a swimming pool for so many
varying reasons.
And finally a big thank you to everyone
that came along and supported the
program, our weekly fun and laughs
will be sadly missed!
