1 Entering Data There are some special formats used for entering data other than numbers and text or selecting from pre defined Drop Down controls. If you enter invalid data, the Edit Box will be displayed with a Red background. In this example a Race Time is required.

Driver Names and Addresses To save you the trouble of typing capitals at the beginning of words in Names and Addresses there is a Checkbox provided. When checked each word automatically starts with a capital letter. If you need to enter a word that does not require this rule, un check the check box.

Race Times When entering times, if you enter a number it is interpreted as seconds. To enter a time in hours or minutes, append h or m to the number. For example: 12m3s 5m If you require a number of laps the format is: 17/303.453 or 17/5m3.453 17 Laps in 303.453 seconds

Time of Day Enter time of day in hours and minutes with a separator. Separators can be . : / or space. For example: 12:25 13.45 Time of day is displayed using the Short Time Format setting in your PC.

Dates You can enter dates in any format you like. The date is displayed in your PC Short Date Format. When entering dates you can enter numbers separated by – or . or /. The order of day, month and year is taken from the order in the PCs Short Date format (Windows Control Panel, Regional Settings, Date). For the UK this is usually day, month, year and in the USA it is month, day, year. If you enter a 1 or 2-digit year, the date is interpreted according to the PCs Calendar Rule (Windows Control Panel, Regional Settings, Date). If this is set to 2029, 2 digit years are interpreted as follows:

bbkRC Reference Manual Rev 0.3 October 2003

- 9 -

Entered Data Interpreted as 0-29 2000 – 2029 30-99 1930 - 1999 Examples of Date Entry with Date as Day Month Year 12 6 34 12th June 1934 7/5/3 7th May 2003 with Date as Month Day Year 12 6 34 December 6th June 1934 7/5/3 July 5th May 2003 Note that dates prior to 1st January 1900 cannot be entered. If you have a Driver with a birth date before this date, we will supply a special version of bbkRC.

Safety Nets If you select an action that will alter data that cannot be “undone” you will see a Safety Net Dialog that will allow you to Cancel this action. In most cases the default response will be No, so that if your fingers are moving faster than your brain, you will not loose data.

Selecting Groups of Items

When you view a collection of items, such as Drivers or Competitors it is often useful to be able to group them, sort them and filter them. The Driver & Cars, Competitors and Transponders collections all have this facility.

Filter The Filter control will restrict the Items displayed to those that in some way match the contents of the Filter box. This is a very quick way of finding a particular item. When the filter is in effect, the Filter control has a red background. To remove the filter, delete the characters in the Filter control or press the Delete key while the cursor is active in the Filter control. The filter below is causing only Drivers with “joh” as part of their name to be displayed. You can also filter on the identification number, which can be Club, National or BRCA Number.

Group By

When you select a Group By, the items are divided into groups by those criteria. You can view the while collection and also the collections with the different settings for that criteria by selecting the appropriate tab.

Sort By You can sort the displayed order of items by selecting an entry in the Sort By Dropdown.

Display You can select the Display type by selecting an entry in the Display Dropdown.

Number of Items in a collection The number of items in a collection, together with the number selected is displayed in the bottom left of the collection screen.

Selecting Columns for Display

When information is displayed in columns, not all the columns need to be displayed. You can turn columns on and off. To select a Column for viewing right mouse click on the column headers and a Pop Up menu will appear with ticks against the columns that are displayed. To view a Hidden column, click next it in this menu and to hide a column click it in the menu. You can also hide a column by double left clicking its column header. There are some columns that should always be viewed and these columns cannot be hidden.

3 Making a New Meeting You can choose to make a new meeting for each meeting you run, or you can “re use” the same meeting over again. You might choose to use the same meeting for your regular club meetings and make a New Meeting for Special meetings. If you are going to publish HTML for a meeting, it is advisable to make a new meeting for each of your meetings, so bbkRC can maintain an HTML index to your meetings.

Make New Meeting From the Main Screen Select Meeting|Make New Meeting.

A New Meeting Template will be displayed. The following settings are available:

Meeting Name This will be used to identify the meeting in the Title of bbkRC and will be printed on every printout.

Meeting Venue This will appear on prints.

Meeting Date This will appear on prints. The button next to this control can be used to set today’s date according to the Short Date Format set in your PC. When making a new meeting this is set to the current date.

Track This can only be changed if you have the Multiple Tracks option. It determines the Lap Parameters used for Race Timing so you can have different minimum, maximum and last lap settings for different tracks.

bbkRC Reference Manual Rev 0.3 October 2003

Race Time Format Controls the formatting of Race Results Times. You can either set it to Seconds or Hours, Minutes and Seconds.

Race Clock Format Controls the formatting of the Race Clock in Races and Open Practice. You can either set it to Seconds or Hours, Minutes and Seconds.

Count Down Race Clock When a race is running you can see either the elapsed time (Count Up) of the race or the time left (Count Down) in the race.

Autocount If you have Autocount Support you can set the type of Autocount equipment, either AMB20 or AMBrc. If you have AMBrc connected to a USB 2.0 port you should set this to AMBrcUSB. When making a new meeting, this is always set to the Autocount Device from the previous meeting.

Settings for Practice, Heats, Points Races and Finals In this version of bbkRC, Points Races are not available.

Number of Rounds This controls the number of rounds that are scheduled. You can change this setting during a meeting. For example, if you decide to run 4 rounds of heats and start the heats, then decide to only run 3 rounds, you can set this back to 3.

Start Time This is not used in this version of bbkRC. In the future it will be used for Meeting Timetable planning.

Interval Between Rounds Set this to a number of hours, minutes and seconds to add to the normal Inter race delay to set a delay between rounds. This is useful at smaller meetings to allow drivers to prepare cars but leave bbkRC in automatic mode. During the inter round interval, bbkRC will give periodic countdown announcements if Speech Output is selected.

First Heat Advance If you want to vary the first Heat or Practice race in successive rounds set this to the number of Heats or Practice races you want to advance by each round. This option is usually only used at International Meetings.

Results Prints Set for the number of Race Results to be automatically printed at the end of each race.

List Prints Set to the number of copies of List Prints required

Grid List Prints Set to the number of Grid summaries required at end of round.

October 2003 bbkRC Reference Manual Rev 0.3

- 16 -

EOR List Prints Set to the number of End of Round qualifying prints required.

This can be used to set all the number of prints to the value in the dropdown control to the left of this button. If you do not have a printer available, you can set the number of prints to zero.

Printer Selection The default printer used is the Windows Default Printer. You can reset this within bbkRC by clicking the left mouse button over the Green Printer Status information at the bottom of the Main Screen. Next time you start bbkRC the printer will revert to the current Windows Default Printer.

You make changes to the Meeting Settings, use either button to Save the changes. You can use the F10 key to save changes.

If you want to cancel any changes you make, press either button. You can use the Esc key to cancel changes.

If you do not make any changes to the Meeting you can press the OK button to return to the main screen. You can use the Enter key to do this.

Making changes to a Meeting You can make changes to the meeting settings during a meeting. You can’t do this while the Race Screen or Open Practice Screens are active. You can close either of these screens by pressing the

button in the Toolbar. Managing Meetings

If you make a new meeting for each meeting you run, you may experience a gradual slowing down of your computer as the data tables start to grow. If this happens you can move the meeting data out of the “live” tables into an archive area. When a meeting is archived, you can still view the meeting data but you cannot run any more races in that meeting until the meeting is moved back to the “live” area.

When you press this button, the meeting is archived. The Meeting Summary in the main Screen is displayed in yellow and [Archived] is appended to the Meeting name. You can make the meeting live again by pressing.

The only reason to make a meeting live would be if you wanted to run more races in that meeting.

Prepare for New Meeting If you want to re-use a meeting then you need to prepare for new meeting. You can selectively remove sections of the meeting. If you remove Competitors, then all races are also removed. Use this option with care as once you commit by pressing OK the removed data cannot be recovered.

Delete this meeting

You can delete a meeting, but first you must remove all competitors using the Prepare for New Meeting Button.

4 Entering Driver & Car Details You can enter new Driver & Car details via the Main Screen or while creating a Competitor. In addition to the mandatory information that must be saved there are a number of optional items of Driver and Car Data.

Required Driver Information Driver Name

This can be up to 60 characters long. While entering the driver name you can set Auto Capitals (the tick box to the right of the Driver name) so there is no need to press the Shift key for capitals. These will be automatically set for you at the start of each name. For names where capitals appear within a name, such as MacMillan or O’Shea, you can turn off the Auto Capitals and enter the name as required. You can turn on Auto Capitals when you enter the next Driver name.

Club ID You can enter any number you like, provided no other Driver has that number allocated. Think of Club ID as the Driver’s Club Number. There are 2 buttons to automatically generate numbers:

Selects the lowest unused Number. Shortcut F6

Selects the lowest unused T Number. Shortcut F7 T Numbers can be used a Temporary numbers. You will be able to separate Drivers for Series points based on whether they have Number IDs or T Number Ids

Driver Name and Club ID are the only mandatory items of data that are needed to make a New Driver.

Required Car Information Car Name

A Driver can have more than one car. To select a Driver’s car, we use the Car Name. This can be anything that you like, like Buggy, Touring Car, Nitro TC etc. The name does not have to unique. It is just a way of identifying a car. To add a Car to a Driver press the

button or use Shortcut Ctrl-C. You can overtype the default car name “New Car” of leave it. If a driver only has one car you don’t need a name to select it. Don’t assign the car make as the name, there is a place for that in the Car data. You don’t need any more data for a car, but it makes sense to at least assign crystals to the car, so when the car is put into races, a suitable crystal can be selected.

bbkRC Reference Manual Rev 0.3 October 2003

- 19 -

If you are using bbkRC to keep a record of your Club members, there may be some members who don’t have cars, such as the Timekeeper. There is no need for a Driver to have a Car.

Car Crystals The car’s crystals are shown in a box. To allocate new crystals check “Show All Available Crystals” and select the Tab for the Crystal band required. The available crystals are shown in yellow and the Car’s Crystals are shown in Green. To select a crystal

double click with the mouse over the crystal. To remove an assigned (green) crystal, double click it.

One of the assigned crystals can be the preferred crystal, shown underlined. To select an assigned crystal as preferred, select it and

right mouse click. Click on the Popup menu and the selected crystal will be the preferred crystal. In the above example T685 is the driver’s preferred crystal. You can select which crystal bands you want to make available. For details see the Chapter on RC Crystals.

Notes You can add Notes to a particular car. Press the Notes Tab below the Crystals Tab to select the Car Notes area.

Additional Driver Data You can keep more information about each Driver and their Cars. This might be useful for providing more information during racing and also to maintain club membership data.

National # This is for a Driver’s National Number. If you want to store BRCA Number, don’t use National Number. There is a special section for BRCA membership information.

Club Member You can use this to keep track of members, particularly at the end of the Club Year, when membership needs to be renewed. You can use this tag to select who is eligible for series points.

5 Setting Up Race Classes There are 10 predefined Race Classes set up when bbkRC is installed. You can alter any of the settings within a Race Class to suit the type of racing you require.

Race Class descriptor settings Name

The Race Class name will be used to identify the Race Class. It will be announced if you enable the Speech Option.

Track Name This indicates the Track that is currently selected for the Meeting.

Warmup Laps This entry is not used in the current version of bbkRC.

Scale This indicates the scale of cars that use this Race Class.

Race Type Specific settings There are 4 types of races available in bbkRC. Practice, Heats, Points Races and Finals. Points Races are not available in this version of bbkRC. You can control settings individually for each type of Race but to save you time, you can change settings for all Race Types at once. If you want to set the Minimum Lap for all type of racing, select the All tab and then change the Minimum Lap. The Minimum Lap will be set for all Race Types. While the All tab is selected, entries that are the same for all types of Races are shown in Black and those that have different values for different Race Types are shown in Grey.

Settings for Practice, Heats and Points Races Race Length

You can specify a Race Length as a Time or as a Time and a Number of Laps. If you specify a Time, the race will run for the Time you have specified. If you specify a number of laps and a time, the race duration will depend on the start type. With Line or Rolling Starts the Race will run until the Race Leader completes the specified number of laps, then all other drivers will finish as they cross the line. The time specified is the maximum time for a race. If the time expires before the Cars finish, the race will be finished automatically. With Staggered Starts the Race Finishes when ALL drivers complete the specified number of laps, or the Time expires.

bbkRC Reference Manual Rev 0.3 October 2003

- 23 -

Maximum Cars This limits the number of cars per race when races are generated automatically.

Start Type There are 5 Start Types Available. Line (First Pass Lap) Cars start together. The first time the cars pass the Autocount Loop they record a lap (Subject to Minimum lap Time setting). Line (First Pass Ignore) Cars start together. The second time the cars pass the Autocount Loop they record a lap (Subject to Minimum lap Time setting). The Line Start sequence is 10 pips at 1 second intervals, followed by a random delay followed by a warble. The Cars should start on the warble. If you are manually counting no manual counts are ever ignored, so you can set either of the above Line Starts and the press the keyboard when you want a car to record a lap. Staggered Start Practice and Heat Races Only. Cars start at regular intervals, typically 1 second. Their individual Race Clocks are started as they cross the Autocount Loop. If a car fails to start at its allotted time, you can force its Race Clock to start in either of 2 ways.

Auto Start Cars After You can Start its Clock a set time after it should have started (determined by its Grid Position and the Time from Start to Loop setting in the Track Dependant settings).

Or First Car Laps When checked, all cars that have not started have their Race Clocks started when the first of the started cars crosses the Autocount Loop. Rolling (First Pass Ignore) & Rolling (First Pass Lap) These are similar to Line Starts except there are no pips or random delay. The Race Starts instantly. Rolling Starts are suitable for IC Racing where the Starter decides when to start the race and the computer must be exactly synchronised. They are also suitable for starting races where the cars are rolling and ensure that any random delay does not allow cars to cross the line too early.

Qualify You can set the Qualifying Rules for different types of Races. If you run Timed Practice you can create Heats based on Competitors Practice Times. There are several Qualifying types available. To get more information on particular qualifying rules available, select a rule and move the mouse over the Drop Down Control. An explanation of the Rule will be displayed for 20 seconds or until you move the mouse of the control. If the Hint disappears before you have finished reading it, just move the mouse off the control and back on again for another 20 seconds. For details of Qualifying formats that are available in bbkRC see Appendix A, Race Formats Supported.

Automatically sorting Competitors into Races

Make Races You can sort the Competitors into Races using the Make Races button. You can choose to assign them to Races based on Ability, Formula and Roof Colour or you can assign them based on their qualifying order in previous races. For Instance you can sort Competitors into Practice Races based on ability, run one or more rounds of Practice then sort them into

heats based on their Practice results. When assigning Competitors into races by ability you can set the crystal allocation to avoid the same crystal being used in consecutive Races. Note that there is no check between the first and last Race. You may also find that there are Competitors in the last Race that have no available crystal. When using ability based sorting, if Ability and Formula are chosen, Formula takes precedence over Ability. An F2 Competitor of Ability 5 is considered higher ability than an F3 Competitor of Ability 9. If you just want Ability based sorting, don’t check Formula. Copy Exactly from…….. If you run a meeting with Timed Practice you may decide to run the Heats with the same drivers as Practice. During Practice you may well make changes to Competitor details. Once Practice is over you can make the Heats from the Practice races. It may also be the case that you have prepared Heats before a meeting and decide on the day to run some Timed Practice. You can make the Practice Races from the Heats you have set up. When you make the Races, if there are already Races of that type you will be warned that you are about to overwrite them and you will have the opportunity to cancel if you have made a mistake.

8 Running Races

To run races, press and you will see a pop-up window listing all race types with the race types that are available in bold. Select the race type required and the left hand pane of the main window will be loaded with the Race Screen. While the Race Screen is active, you can not change any meeting details or change meetings. If you need to do this you can close the races by pressing

the button on the Race Toolbar. The Race Screen is divided into 4 Sections.

Race Header

This shows the current Race details. You can hide this section by

pressing on the Toolbar. If hidden you can restore this section

by pressing . The Hidden state is stored separately between and while races are running. You might choose to see this section between races and hide it during races.

Race Information

This shows the currently selected race. The competitors are listed in their grid order. There are multiple information columns associated

with the Competitors. You can show and hide them as described in Chapter 2. The first 4 columns are protected from being hidden. During the period before a race starts, if you have an auto count system cars crossing the line will record “Warmup” laps. This indicates that their auto count device is working. During the race, the competitors are shown in Race Order at all times. Right Mouse clicking a Competitor allows

penalties and corrections, best results display and the Font and Size for this section to be set. Left Mouse Clicking a competitor’s crystal displays all other

competitors using that crystal. This is useful when interference is called.

Race Progress Race Progress is shown as a time, either increments or decrementing and also a “progress bar”. The time is shown in white during the countdown to a race, in Green during a race, in Yellow after race time has expired (Staggered Starts Only) and in Red when the competitors are finishing their final lap.

Secondary Race Information

The secondary Race Information section can display the lap table during a race, a viewer for any race other than the current race and the “live qualifying” based on current, or during a race, estimated results. The lap table builds up as the race progresses, with the fastest lap shown with a yellow background. Left mouse clicking a lap time shows the details of the signal qualify and clock time that the lap was recorded.

The Race Results viewer is loaded with the results of the race that has just finished. If the recorded time is the Competitor’s best, it is displayed with a silver background. A right mouse click on a Competitor allows penalties and corrections to be applied or removed and also allows the Font style and size for this View to be set. As each race finishes it is automatically displayed in this section. You can select any race from the Race Schedule

screen for display. Live Qualifying is based on the qualifying format set in the Race Class profile. The Race Information and Secondary Race Information views can

be shown side by side or one above the other by using the or

buttons. Race Schedule

October 2003 bbkRC Reference Manual Rev 0.3

- 34 -

The Race Schedule shows the Races that have been run and that are still to be run. indicates that a race has been run and indicates that the race is the next selected to run. When running in Auto

Mode all races not yet run have the scheduled start time listed. As soon as you start Heats in Auto Mode you know what time the last Heat will start. When trying to fit in a lot of racing this is useful. Right Mouse Clicking a Race

allows various operations to be performed on the Race. Transponder Signal Information Controlling Races

Races can be manually started and abandoned if necessary. Races can be run in automatic mode, with an inter race gap specified in the Race Class profile. The starting Heat number in each Round can be specified (in the Meeting) so the last heat in each round varies. This is sometimes required in Round By Round qualifying. Pressing

activates Auto Mode. The countdown to the start of the first race can be set using the drop down control to the right.

Race Toolbar Controls

Mode Selector The mode selector can be used to change from Auto Mode to Manual Mode. If a race is running, the race will complete. If you switch from Manual Mode to Auto Mode the Race Schedule will be resumed. If the race start is less than 30 seconds away, the countdown clock will be reset to 30 seconds. This is to ensure the start does not take everyone by surprise (if it was only a few seconds away.

Unknown Transponder Action This controls the action to be taken when an unexpected transponder is detected. This is most useful when AMBrc Personal Transponders are in use. If an unknown Transponder is detected, a New Competitor entry is created in the Race. Any existing competitor can be assigned to this Transponder, and if it is a Personal Transponder, it can be permanently assigned to that car in the Driver & Car Database and the other races in the current Race Type. It the Transponder is a Group Transponder, the Transponder assignments for other races in the current group are not changed. The reason for this is that if a particular number transponder is not available at the start of the race, the time keeper can advise the competitor to use an available number for that race, but revert to the correct transponder for subsequent races, when it is located. Any times recorded by an unknown transponder that has not been allocated to a Driver by the end of the race are discarded. Note that

at the end of a race, if competitors continue to cross the Autocount detection loop, they will record Warm-up laps for the next race.

Frequency Scanner A Frequency Scanner is available to identify competitors on any

frequency. Click on the area to the right of . A Frequency Selection dialog appears. Select the frequency to scan and then

press and all Competitors on the selected Frequency will

be shown. Clear Unknown Transponders This clears all competitor entries for unknown transponders. Clear Warm-up Laps This clears warm-up laps. Warm up laps are for information only.

Edit/Explore Transponders with AMB20 Run Equipment | Edit View/View Transponders. An entry is made for each transponder number and the number of passing is recorded against each number, along with other information. As the AMB20 Decoder cannot distinguish between transponders with the same number this information is not particularly useful. It is primarily intended for AMBrc Decoders.

Setting up AMBrc You can connect an AMBrc Decoder to a Serial port of a USB 2.0 port. The decoder can be powered from the USB 2.0, 1.1 or 1.0 Port. If you have a USB 1.0 or 1.1 Port you will need to use a Serial port for data transfer. If you intend to use the USB Port for Power or Data you will need to install the USB Driver supplied by AMB IT. For your convenience it is included with the bbkRC CD in directory: USB It is also available as a Download from the AMB IT website, www.amb-it.com.When you first connect the AMBrc Decoder to you PC USB Port, Windows will ask for the location of this Driver. Date Last Used The date the Transponder was last used is recorded. This helps keep track of the usage of transponders owned by the Club

Last Bad Battery pressing the button to the right of this control clears this date.

Assigned To: This control will list the Driver and Cars that a Personal Transponder is assigned to. You can assign the following items of information to selections of Transponders: Group, Ownership, Colour and Last Bad Battery.

AMBrc Transponder Management If you have Rechargeable Transponders, you use this utility to assign them to groups. You can assign a number of Transponders to a group and when a Competitor’s Car is assigned a transponder in a Group, any Transponder that is part of that Group can be used. If you have 2 x 10 Rechargeable Transponders you would normally assign 2 to each of groups T1 – T10. You could equally well assign 1 transponder to groups T1 – T20, so you could run 20 car races.

Assigning Groups & Colours to Transponders If you have Rechargeable Transponders the easiest way to set them up is as follows: Set up the AMBrc Decoder and start Open Practice. Pass a complete set of 1 colour transponder over the loop so they are detected. Start Edit/View Transponders. You will see the Transponder numbers on the screen. Select all Transponders (Left mouse click one transponder then press Ctrl-A). Right Mouse click over the selected area and you will see the Popup menu. Select the first item “Auto Assign to Group”. Each of the selected Transponders will be set to the group from its last digit. Now select all the Transponders again and this time select “Set Colour Group”. Repeat this for any others sets you have, but only select the “new” transponders. The easiest way to do this is to segregate the Transponders using Group by: “Owned by” and select the Driver Tab. This will show all the new transponders

Assigning Ownership to Transponders If you have Personal Transponders that belong to the Club by setting the Owned By Club checkbox you can keep track of them. Club Owned PTS are shown in Green and Driver owned PTs are shown in Yellow.
