ON THE COVER

Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Dayspring’ Jemison Lily Garden

Amy Nabors lives in Alexander City and is a part time photographer and blogger at www.ordinarilyextraordinary.com. She enjoys visiting The Gardens with her son when they are in Birmingham to see family or shop. Amy first started bringing her son to The Gardens to allow him to release some of his energy after the hour drive into Birmingham.

Amy and her son both love walking through The Gardens, each with camera in hand, to photograph the ever changing beauty. Since beginning their visits to The Gardens her son has become such a lover of flowers and plants.

Amy captured her son jumping over a rock in the Japanese Gardens on a beautiful Spring day in early April. This photo is one of her favorites from her visits to The Gardens because it captures her son’s energetic personality.

It isn’t too late to submit your own photograph to be considered for an upcoming issue.

Dear Friends:

Our mission of educating people about plants, gardens and the environment lies at the core of the 2010 Master Plan for Birmingham Botanical Gardens, which was unveiled on 25 March, and can be viewed at www.bbgardens.org/masterplan. The plan is visitor-oriented, providing greater accessibility and increasing our capacity for events, activities and teaching. It solves stormwater problems with ecological restoration, making more places to conserve, display and teach about Alabama’s remarkable native plant diversity. It also emphasizes “the global garden” by adding an important chapter in garden design history and expanding food crop production. Finally, it points the way to greater sustainability as green technologies replace an aging and inefficient infrastructure.

The plan’s completion signifies “the end of the beginning” of the process and will soon be followed by cost estimations and strategic planning to prioritize what elements of the plan will be tackled in what order and when. In a broad sense, The Gardens’ current form has taken nearly 50 years and three master plans to evolve. Just as trees take time to mature, the 2010 master plan—which builds on the past—will take some time to realize. We believe that this measured approach is to our benefit.

I’ll close by thanking all of our generous volunteers, partnering organizations and skilled staff for their efforts in helping stage the Spencer Lecture, Spring Plant Sale and Earth Day at The Gardens. We owe our success to all of you, as well as the thousands of patrons, customers and visitors who partake of our numerous program offerings.

See you in The Gardens,

Fred Spicer

After highlighting Susan Colvin and the Fay B. Ireland Perennial Group (2009 Plantsperson and Plant Partner of the Year, respectively) in the March/April issue, we now tip our hats to the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year and the Educator of the Year as they lead us through a busy summer season of youth programs and vacationing visitors.

Since February 1976, Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year Thelma Stichweh has dedicated every Friday morning to the Library cataloging, shelving, reading and assisting patrons with books. Her own story began 33 years ago when a friend coerced her to attend a seminar on orchids and ferns led by Ida C. Burns. She describes herself as asking the silliest question, “Why do my ferns come up

To the army of volunteers who make the Spring Plant Sale happen, to Colonial Brookwood, Inc. for providing the site for four years and to the tireless Friends and City staff members who work around the clock before, during, and after this gargantuan fundraising event, we express our gratitude and our admiration. We appreciate our sponsors: Johnson Sterling, Brio, Birmingham Home & Garden, Leaf & Petal, InBham.com, and Buffalo Rock. Now if we can just all get those plants in the ground…

out of the ground all curled up?” Ida C Burns responded with an invitation to help type letters in the Library. Like Ida before her, Thelma is the Library’s matriarch – recruiting and coordinating volunteers to keep its doors open seven days a week. As to her unwavering dedication, Thelma responds “Ida said it takes special people to work in a library and for me this has meant hundreds of friends.”

Bitsy Williams has been leading children as an education docent since the inception of the Discovery Field Trip curriculum. Our Educator of the Year draws on her background as a play therapist at Children’s Hospital to make each child’s experience unforgettable. In her words, “For each child this may be their only chance to visit The Gardens.” Bitsy uses nature’s spontaneous tools to enhance each field trip. Of her dedication, Bitsy humbly replies, “They’ll have to fire me!” Sorry Bitsy, we were thinking more like a raise.

To join Thelma in the Library or Bitsy as an education docent, contact Mary-Bestor Tickle at 205.414.3962 or [email protected].

BOOK REVIEWHope Long, Director of Library

Succulent Container Gardens: Design Eye-catching Displays with 350 Easy-care Plants, by Debra Lee Baldwin

Ok, so if you know me, you know that I go through phases where I am obsessed with a particular group of plants. My obsession for the past two years has

been sedums and succulents. I have been waiting—very impatiently—for Debra Baldwin’s newest book to finally be published, and I was not disappointed. This book is full of fantastic pictures that will have you chomping at the bit to create your own cool and funky succulent container. There are five parts to the book: Paring Plants with Pots, Plant Palette, Creative Designs and Displays, Planting, Care and Propagation and then a section on Design-Oriented Plant Lists which has lists with pictures of categories such as textural features, cold-hardy cacti and succulents, colorful leaves, fillers and cascaders. If you are a lover of succulents and sedums this book is a must for your collection. Stop by The Library and check it out! You can also stop by Leaf ‘n Petal at the Gardens and purchase it.

Sweetbay magnolia, Magnolia virginiana, (below left) is a beautiful small tree with many subtle qualities. It’s a shame that this well-adapted and pest-free native is often overlooked when small trees are needed. It has an upright and multi-trunked habit, on which the leaves are borne towards the ends of the branches like loose, soft clouds. The leaves are matte-smooth, oblong like rhododendron, medium green on top and silvery beneath (below, top right). The latter quality is much-discussed in the literature, deservedly so, as breezes create a nice, understated shimmering effect. The flowers (right) are creamy-white, and lemony-sweet, occurring in moderation throughout May and June, and sporadically into September on mature plants.

Primarily a Coastal Plain species occurring from MA and NY (Long Island) south through Florida, and west to eastern TX, sweetbay is also found in the Piedmont from NJ south through the Carolinas and GA and west, sporadically into MS and AR. It rarely occurs

in low elevation southern mountain bogs. Some taxonomists treat the smaller, more deciduous, northern populations as var. virginiana, northern sweetbay, and the larger, evergreen southern populations as var. australis, southern sweetbay. Between native stands in NJ and AL, the variation is quite pronounced; in NJ 15-20’ in height is the norm. In AL, I’ve seen plants in the wild over 60’ tall, although 30-40’ is more likely in cultivation, after many years.

Sweetbay prefers moist, acid habitats in the wild, like swamps, stream edges, and other drainage ways. In Alabama, it is relatively

common in such habitats in the southeastern two-thirds of the state. Here, it competes favorably under and alongside its close relative southern magnolia, M. grandiflora, and other large wetland trees. In cultivation, however, sweetbay shows excellent drought tolerance and also thrives in open, sunny locations. It makes an ideal lawn, edge-of-the-woods, courtyard or patio specimen and is beautiful in formal and informal groupings alike. See sweetbay at The Gardens near Sonat Lake and in the Kaul Wildflower Garden.

For more information on Magnolia virginiana, please go to www.bbgardens.org.

MAYFRUITS AND NUTS – Continue spray program. Keep grass from around trees and strawberries. Peaches and apples can still be budded.

SHRUBS – Newly planted shrubs need extra care now and in coming weeks. Don’t spray with oil emulsions when temperature is above 85 °F.

LAWNS – Now is the best time to start lawns from seed. Water new lawns as needed to prevent drying. Keep established lawns actively growing by watering, fertilizing and mowing. Spray weeds in lawns with proper herbicide.

ROSES – Spray or dust for insects and diseases. Fertilize monthly with complete fertilizer or rose special. Container-grown plants in flower may be planted. Prune climbing roses after the first big flush offlowering.

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Late plantings of bedding plants still have time to produce. Watch for insects on day lilies.

BULBS – Summer bulbs started in containers may still be planted. Do not remove foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Do not let seedheads form on tulips and other spring flowering bulbs.

MISCELLANEOUS – Mulch new shrub plantings if not already done. Avoid drying out new shrub, tree and lawn plantings.

VEGETABLE SEED – Plant heat-loving and tender vegetables. Start cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and celery in coldframe for fall garden.

VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and sweet potatoes.

JUNEFRUITS AND NUTS – Layer grapes and continue spray pro-grams. Thin apples and peaches if too thick.

SHRUBS – Lace bugs may be a problem on azaleas, pyracan-thas, dogwoods, cherry laurels, and other shrubs. Water as needed. Fertilize now. Keep long shoots from developing by pinching out tips. Good time to take cuttings from semi-mature wood for rooting.

LAWNS – Follow a schedule of fertilization and watering. Lawns should be mowed weekly Planting may continue if soil is moist. Continue weed spraying if necessary.

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Keep old flower heads removed to promote continued flowering. Plant garden mums if not already in. For compact mums, keep tips pinched out. Watch for insects and diseases.

BULBS – Foliage may be removed from spring bulbs if it has yellowed and is becoming dry. Watch for aphids and thrips on summer bulbs.

MISCELLANEOUS – If scale insects continue on shrubs, use materials other than oils. Set houseplants on porch or outdoors in shade and pay close attention to the need for water. If desired, air layer houseplants.

VEGETABLE SEED – Plant beans, field peas, pumpkins, squash, corn, cantaloupes and watermelons.

VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant to-matoes, peppers, eggplants and sweet potato vine cuttings.
