BBFC Certification

BBFC was first formed in 1912and since then the BBFC has developed from putting certification on books and novels to films and games. After 1985 the BBFC was then known from The British Board of Film Censors to for The British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC is more or less a team run by a non-governmental organization originated by the film industry. The BBFC one main role which has been the same since 1985 was to classify cinema films under rating certifications. This had helped tackle issues happening in the film industry as anybody under the age of the rating certification was not allowed to watch the content. There are seven different classifications to class films which have been released and these are: U (Unrated, PG (Parental Guidance), 12, 12A, 15, 18, R18.

Our production certification is aimed members of the public aged 12 and above, however our film is specifically targeted to those aged 12 to 30. This due to the fact that our short film would be able to relate to audiences who tend to be aged 12 and above. As having a physical disability could occur at any time however, it would affect a person mentally the most whilst in their teenage years. Furthermore, I personally think that the targeted audience would be connected with the protagonist well, as I had planned the narrative in a way where the audience would pity and feel sorry for the character.

The genre in which I had chosen for our productions short film is the drama. All crew members within the group had decided that we wanted to move our audience emotionally therefore drama was the best way to categories our film. The sub-genres in which our film would fall under would be melodrama as the emotions in which the protagonist feels are demonstrated throughout the film. With so much emotion being shown to the audience in a certain way, we as a group had concluded that this film would not be appropriate for anyone under the age of 12.

Lastly, when finally deciding the appropriate age certification for our short film, I had taken note of the amount of emotion and sensitivity from the feedback taken from the questionnaire. With all feedback we had come to a conclusion that our five minute short film, Broken would be given a 12+ rating. The reason for this is because, our film doesnt contain any nature of violence or any sex/nudity or drug related scenes. However, we had decided if we should have our short film for 12A but as this is one of our products we would like to maximize our audience in order to obtain success.
