PLC Communication Integration
Monitoring in real time and managing your control system using your PLC is afive-step procedure:
Step Description
1
Define your network and PLC settings - SETUP TOOLS | SYSTEM SETTINGS /NETWORKING
Virtually all melter data is available through one of the many network protocols, such as Profinetand Ethernet IP to allow the parent machine to control most or all aspects of control systemoperation.
2
Download the appropriate PLC Starter Kit for your control system and PLCmanufacturer from the MEDIA CENTER.
To speed development for the PLC engineer, Nordson has developed Starter Kits for mostcontrol systems. These Starter Kits contain useful data and tools to facilitate control systemintegration into the parent machine as quickly as possible.Parent Machine integration (PMI) Starter Kits contain the following tools:
Add-On Instructions (AOI) for Allen Bradley or function blocks for Siemens
Supports only the pre-configured cyclic map. You must use the Nordson-supplied custom
cyclic map. Otherwise, the Add-On Instructions (AOI) will not work.
 Quick start guide and video
Programmer manual and all applicable GSD/GSDML files, sample code, and sample HMI
screen.
3
Use BBconn Cloud to create a .PLC file containing the ADI map.
Refer to:
The next section, Creating and Customizing the ADI Map File
The section, Understanding Nordson's Data Mapping System
4Export the .PLC file from BBconn Cloud to your control system.
Refer to Exporting a .PLC File from BBconn Cloud later in this manual.
5Program the .PLC to communicate with the control system.
Refer to the PLC starter kit for your control system and PLC manufacturer.
The following sections detail steps 3 and 4.
NOTES:
You must use BBconn Cloud to view, create, and modify .PLC files.
Your control system comes with a default cyclic map, referred to as
an ADI map. The map is designed with a pre-configured section thatis Nordson’s best estimation of what most customers will select fortheir HMI, and a free section for custom data.
When used in a network system, Nordson melters always act as
slaves.

Status cannot occur twice in the READ area. BBconn Cloud ignoresunallowable actions.
BBconn Cloud automatically places ADI mapping requests in
sequential order. For example, if nothing is entered in the READ areaand you attempt to drag and drop Fill Status (13000) into thenumber9 slot, BBconn Cloud automatically places the entry intoslot0, or the first available slot.
To delete an ADI entry, left-click inside the field you want to delete
and use the backspace key to delete all the numbers; left-clickanywhere on the screen to exit the field. The ADI entry is cleared.

Understanding Nordson's Data Mapping System
The data mapping system for the all Nordson control systems was designedto be simple, efficient, and highly customizable. Each piece of data in themap has a number associated with it called an Application Data Identifier(ADI). This unique identifier makes it simple to configure the data mapneeded for your specific application.
The major advantages of the mapping system are:
Efficient and customizable mapping system that uses both acyclic
(slow) and cyclic (fast) messages
Pre-configured cyclic map can be customized by the PLC engineer
through BBconn Cloud.
Acyclic map is composed of a series of ADI/Value pairs that are easily
parsed by the Flex system.
Possible to control and monitor the melter through cyclic messages,
acyclic messages, or a combination of both
See Figure 3.

BBconn Cloud for the Cyclic Message
The cyclic message is typically used for data that is required in real time. Thisdata can include motor speed (if used), alarms, basic status, etc. Becausethis message is sent at a high repeat rate, it is usually kept very small tominimize bus traffic. It is possible for some systems to forego the cyclicmessage and to use only acyclic messages.
See Figure 4. Setting up the map of the cyclic message can be done throughNordson's BBconn Cloud web application. Use the drop-down menus tochoose the data elements to add to the map, and their respective ADIsappear in the list on the right of the screen. Once this map is complete, themap data can be downloaded from BBconn Cloud and then uploaded to yourcontrol system, at which time it is ready for use by the PLC.
NOTE: Most control systems include a default cyclic map with apre-configured section that is Nordson’s best estimation of what mostcustomers will select for their HMI, and a free section for custom data. Thismap can be used as supplied, without editing it through BBconn Cloud. Forthe complete ADI map, refer to Application Data Identifier (ADI) Map(P/N1128648).

Acyclic Messages
Acyclic messages are not predefined in BBconn Cloud. They are built andsent by the PLC “on-the-fly.”
The acyclic message is created from the same complete ADI list as the cyclicmessage, making the acyclic data channel very full-featured and greatlyreduces the amount of data required in the limited cyclic space.
All acyclic data blocks are transmitted/received as an ADI/Data pair. TheADI, chosen from the ADI list in BBconn Cloud or from this manual, isfollowed by the data. One ADI/Data pair is allowed per acyclic message. Thefrequency and content of the messages can vary according to the needs ofthe system.
