Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Poised on the crest of the mid-Atlantic ridge, Iceland is literally a land of fire and ice–a pure landscape of volcanoes, glaciers, and spectacular waterfalls that is also home to a dynamic culture of contemporary art, music, and literature. On this six-night tour in September, when temperatures are mild and the aurora borealis is at its most active, join me to explore Iceland’s unparalleled natural splendors and its exciting contemporary art scene.

As an art historian specializing in Icelandic art, I am thrilled and honored to make my second Met trip to this island nation as a Met lecturer. On our tour, I will share with you some of the most spectacular natural and cultural treasures in and around Reykjavík, the northernmost capital in the world.

We will explore sites from the medieval sagas and follow in the footsteps of the country’s Viking Age settlers. We will also explore Iceland’s innovative approaches to renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Among the highlights of the trip will be a walking tour of the capital city, with visits to notable architectural sites, museums, galleries, and restaurants, including a visit to see Richard Serra’s outdoor installation on Viðey Island.

I hope you will join me on this exhilarating journey through Iceland’s lava fields, glacial moraines, black-sand beaches, geothermal pools, majestic waterfalls, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Sincerely,Pari StaveSenior AdministratorDepartment of Modern and Contemporary ArtThe Metropolitan Museum of Art

— Explore a vast array of Iceland’s dreamlike landscapes and geological wonders, from the immense cascades of the Gullfoss waterfall; to the moss-covered mountains and blue glaciers of the Thórsmörk valley; to the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, whose caves, ravines, and water-filled rifts were showcased on Game of Thrones

— Wander through a 100-meter-long, man-made ice cave in Reykjavík’s Perlan science museum, and marvel at Áróra, the very first 8K planetarium show about the Northern Lights

— Encounter Jules Verne’s fantasy world at the magical Snæfellsjökull volcano, which served as the portal to a dramatically different realm in his novel A Journey to the Center of the Earth

— Sail to the tiny pristine island of Viðey to experience Richard Serra’s arresting site-specific installation Afangar (“Standing Stones”), in which he placed towering basalt monoliths around the island’s perimeter

Departure Tuesday, September 8 Depart on an overnight flight to Reykjavík.

Reykjavík, IcelandWednesday, September 9 Upon arrival this morning at Reykjavík’s Keflavík Airport, meet our Icelandic guide. After breakfast, stop at Viking World, a museum housing a meticulously constructed replica of a 9th-century Viking ship. Venture to the hauntingly beautiful Kleifarvatn Lake, a body of water enclosed by stark hills and black-sand beaches, located on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Proceed to Krýsuvíkurbjarg cliffs, home to a small colony of puffins and thousands of birds that migrate here during summer to lay eggs. Later, check in to the Landhotel, where we will have our welcome dinner. B, L, D

South Shore Thursday, September 10 Explore the black-sand beaches at the base of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which last erupted in 2010, and walk behind the waterfalls of the Sólheimajökull glacier. Enjoy lunch at a family farm restaurant, with views of the mountain Steinafjall and Eyjafjallajökull. Continue to Skogar Folk Museum, where we will visit the volcano exhibition. Return to the hotel for an evening at leisure. B, L

ThórsmörkFriday, September 11Board a four-wheel-drive vehicle and head to Thórsmörk, named the “Valley of Thor” after the hammer-wielding Norse god. Absorb the region’s surreal yet captivating ambiance, with its mossy mountain peaks, black plains, and blue glaciers. Following lunch, return to the Landhotel for an afternoon and evening at leisure. Tonight is open for sky watching. B, L

Thingvellir National Park Saturday, September 12 Stand in awe before the vast and spectacular Gullfoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Depart for Fridheimar, a famous tomato farm with four brightly illuminated greenhouses heated by geothermal energy. At the Fridheimer horse farm, enjoy a lecture explaining the history and origins of the unique Icelandic horse, followed by lunch in the greenhouses amid tomato plants. Visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This volcanic valley is where the Althing, an open-air assembly representing all of Iceland and the world’s oldest parliament still in existence, was established in 930 A.D. Discover some of the remains of the Althing as well as dramatic ravines and water-filled rifts, which made it a prime filming location for Game of Thrones. In the evening, check into Hotel Hamar for a group dinner. B, L, D

Snæfellsnes Peninsula Sunday, September 13 Begin the day with a visit to Gerðuberg on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, which is listed as a natural heritage site. In Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, the crater of Snæfellsjökull volcano served as the

portal to fantastical subterranean realms. In the eyes of both “traditional” believers in the supernatural and new agers, Snæfellsjökull holds a rare mystique and power. Enjoy lunch in these otherworldly landscapes of lava fields and both gold- and pink-sand beaches. On our way back to Reykjavík, we will visit a local family-run farm in Hvalfjörður, a beautiful fjord in West Iceland. Check in to Hotel Borg for two nights. B, L

Reykjavík Monday, September 14On an architectural driving tour of Reykjavík, see the 244-foot-tall Hallgrímskirkja (Hallgrims Church), which architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed to mimic Iceland’s rocky mountain landscapes. View the sculpture garden of the Einar Jónsson Museum, featuring works from the famed Icelandic artist. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of Harpa, Reykjavík’s concert hall and cultural center, which has a gleaming, glass honeycomb façade. Experience how Icelandic nature inspired its vibrant design as you explore areas not open to the public. At Perlan, an innovative science museum, wander through a manmade ice cave built from 350 tons of snow from Iceland’s mountains. Learn about the history and future of the earth’s glaciers, and marvel at Áróra, the first-ever 8K planetarium show about the Northern Lights, blending science and art to create a dazzling experience. After lunch at leisure, take a short boat trip to Viðey Island to view Afangar (“Standing Stones”), Richard Serra’s site-specific installation of nine pairs of basalt columns ranging from nine to 13 feet tall, named for a celebrated Icelandic poem. Next tour the modern and contemporary collections of the Reykjavík Art
