Super Squirrel ChallengeBirds love birdseed. But guess who else loves it? Squirrels!

Squirrels are clever and determined. If they want birdseed, they will do anything to get it.

Can you design a birdfeeder that lets the birds get the seeds while keeping out the squirrels?

Create a Pencil Picker-Upper!

Help! My pencil is on the floor and I cannot bend

down to pick it up!

Draw a picture of a tool I can use to pick up my pencil.

Your picture must include labels for the supplies you would

use and a description of how your Pencil Picker-Upper

would work.

Giraffes What’s heavier than a piano, taller than a double-decker bus

and slower than a car? A giraffe! Giraffes are known for their long necks, skinny legs and spotted patterns. A newborn

giraffe is about 6 feet tall, that’s about as tall as a basketball player! Young giraffes are called calves and they will grow to be 16-19 feet tall and weigh between 1,600 and

3,000 pounds. Giraffes are mammals just like humans. They are herbivores which means they only eat plants. Their long tongues are helpful in eating because they help pull leaves

from the trees. A full grown giraffe can consume over 100 pounds of leaves and twigs a day! Giraffes live primarily in savanna areas in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. They

travel in large packs or herds and help each other out like a community. Even though they are tall and skinny giraffes are

not easy prey. Animals like lions, leopards and hyenas often try to hunt giraffes but they do not have much success

since giraffes are strong and powerful. One kick from an adult giraffe could knock a lion out! Giraffes also have

excellent vision that makes it easy for them to spot predators from miles away and run to avoid them. Some scientists believe that other animals- such as

zebras, antelope and wildebeests- often travel with giraffes to take advantage of their ability

to see danger approaching.

Fun Fact: Did you know giraffes have horns? They have two distinct, hair- covered horns called ossicones which

help protect their heads from injury. © Ainsley Karl
