For the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Romeo & Juliet, our village held our very own masquerade ball. It was a fantastic night, with brightly coloured masks, great music and fantastic company. The food was incredible with platters of cheese, crackers, fruit and savouries. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and we cannot wait for the next one!

Romeo & Juliet Ball

Greetings from Marika...Bonjour et bienvenue to our Christmas edition of Bert’s Innings. A warm welcome to all new residents, families and friends of Bert Sutcliffe.

This edition is very special as the village is now a year old and what a year it’s been. We hold so many fond memories for our fi rst year.

The last block of independent apartments is well under way and we are looking forward to completing construction in 2018. Our residents can't wait to get on our bowling green!

Our care centre is now fully operational and we are so proud to have achieved a perfect audit from the Ministry of Health, giving us a four-year certifi cation. This was yet to be achieved for a brand new

Ryman village. We certainly made history!

We have a wonderful range of activities coming up on our calendar, including celebrations for Christmas and our annual children’s party in January. Don’t forget to check out your calendar for all upcoming events!

I will be heading back to Quebec over Christmas, I am very much looking forward to spending time with my family. I wish you a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Kind regards,

Marika Lafl ammeVillage ManagerM ik L fl

Charity partner announced

In June, Alzheimer’s NZ was announced as Ryman’s charity partner for the year. Ngaire Dixon, chair of Alzheimer’s New Zealand, was delighted with the announcement as dementia and Alzheimers will become more of an issue in the future. There were more than 62,000 New Zealanders with dementia

in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.

The King and Queen of the ball: John Baxter and Jean Raw

Our staff joined the festivities as well

Dapper lads: John Baxter, Desmond Raw, Brian Harkins and Ken Mason

Recently the village celebrated its one year anniversary! We welcomed new residents and new staff, we formed new relationships and we grew closer as a community.

For our celebrations, the independent and serviced apartment residents got together and held a Great Gatsby-themed ball.

Our residents went all out with some fantastic era-inspired costumes, while everyone danced to the wonderful music of Craig Hallen. It was a magical night spent in the company of wonderful people.

One year anniversary

Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the fi rst Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life.

Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle.

Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there.

“I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’

In 2011, she applied for the fi rst Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time.

Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.

Cashin Scholarship open for entries

The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply.

Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous.

Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refi ning the menus for this edition.

“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refi ning the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.”

Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations.

And the best new dish on the menu?

“Defi nitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused.

The summer menus were rolled out in October.

Summ er menu launched ! Wellness ExpoThe Wellness Expo is an event to encourage and help residents to live their best lives through physical and mental health. The expo was a huge hit with our residents and we had some wonderful stalls including a denture clinic, Dilworth Hearing audiologists, independent living solutions and many more! For afternoon tea we were treated to some healthy snacks. Herbalife came along to the expo and residents could sample their delicious treats and bodycare products. What a wonderful afternoon!

Celebrating art

During September, our residents displayed some amazing talents at our art exhibition. The lounge was fi lled to the brim with artwork of all shapes and sizes.

The residents proudly displayed their artworks. From paintings, drawings, needle work, quilting, model building, to wood work. We had all types of arts and crafts.

The residents loved seeing all the work displayed and it was so interesting learning about how everyone came to love their hobbies. We also managed to get some fantastic tips on how to start our own projects!

The day was very successful and we are certainly going to hold another exhibition next year!

Hello, my name is Ashika Prasad and I am the serviced apartment coordinator at Bert Sutcliffe Retirement Village. I moved to Auckland more than a year ago, but I was born in Fiji and grew up in Tasmania.

I have 10 years of experience as a medical, rehab and surgical nurse. Prior to my career in nursing, I worked as a cleaner, a carer and I also worked on numerous fruit farms.

I came to Auckland for a holiday and decided to stay here because I loved it so much. I started looking for a job and then brought my two daughters over and we started our new life here. I was blessed to get a position as a unit coordinator in a brand-new retirement village, which I was very excited about and I really enjoy working with the residents.

My favourite part of my role is to ensure that appropriate service is delivered with compassion and expertise to every resident and to coordinate and oversee the performance of all the staff members involved in providing the services.

In my spare time, I love exploring Auckland and spending time with my family. I really enjoy working for Ryman Healthcare and adore the team I work with.

Hello! My name is Sandra-Leigh Johnson and what a great honour it is to share a small portion of my life with you.

I hail from Winnipeg, Canada, and met my Kiwi husband while working at my fi rst job as a telephone operator for Bell Canada. We married and welcomed two daughters to the world before moving to New Zealand. I have been in this beautiful country for the past 46 years.

We spent 21 years in Whangarei and that is where my career as a proof-reader

began and fl ourished throughout my time working for The Northern Advocate and various other projects.

Technology and computers have been an essential part of my life since 1985 and I have been fascinated with how technology has changed. I pride myself on keeping my brain active with learning all about the new technology available to us.

Exercise is a priority in my life and as a result I am in great health. Besides using computers, I enjoy travelling, dancing, singing, embroidery, sewing, reading, and I am a staunch member of Bert’s Ramblers, the village walking group!

My out-of-village activities include Tripe 'n' Onions Club, 60's Up and Grey Power.

For the past six years I was looking into moving to a retirement village. Ryman Healthcare came on top of the list and suffi ce it to say, Bert Sutcliffe Retirement Village has not disappointed.

I love that the village is halfway between my daughters’ homes and am absolutely blown away by how welcoming the staff and residents are.

I love my family, especially my seven grandchildren, and can happily say that each day is a gift for which I am grateful!

g

Diwali celebrations Our residents celebrated Diwali with a

selection of delicious Indian delicacies.

Residents, their families and staff enjoyed

Spring OlympicsThe care centre decided to have its very own Olympics. Our fi rst event was bowling, it was very popular, followed by balloon tennis and fi nally quoits. Everyone got a bit competitive at this stage but we managed to keep our sportsmanship! The residents received chocolate medals for participating and we all had a great afternoon! Our Olympic games were so much fun!

Fashion parade

The residents participated in a fashion show thrown by Victoria J’s Fashions, it was a great turnout with the whole village coming to view the beautiful garments and the gorgeous models. The models couldn’t stop smiling and the crowd couldn’t get enough of the wonderful clothes. It was such a successful event that Victoria said she would be back next year to show off the new season’s fashions!
