2018 BMDCA National News

The progress toward the 2018 National continued at Fall Fun Day. Thanks to those in attendance, we sold

$548 of 2018 Ways and Means merchandise. The new embroidered fleece vests were a crowd favorite. Don’t forget to order yours at the BMDCA online store before they run out! http://www.bmdca-store.com/2018-WM_c_61.html

Soon the National Specialty planning book will be ready to go describing everything you need to know to prepare to enjoy the event. Many volunteers are working diligently to coordinate every aspect that goes into a National Specialty. But, there are still many more volunteers needed.

Stewards are needed for both conformation and all performance events. Don’t worry if you don’t have experience. There’ll be experienced people to show you the ropes. No matter which event interests you, stewarding is a great way to learn more about what goes on in the show ring.

If you think you’ll have an odd bit of time to help out here and there – or more – the raffle or ways & means could be a great fit for you. Both of these areas need people to fill in for short shifts during the week.

Whatever you’re able to contribute will be greatly valued. A national breed show is a unique event, and our BMDCA National stands out as a special time for everyone who plays a role. Our BMDCNV Club always hosts a wonderful event full of fun and lasting memories. Be a part of team Nashoba and volunteer. To volunteer, you can either contact a committee chair directly (the list of chairs is at http://bmdca.org/specialty/2018/committee.php), or send an email to [email protected] and mention how you’d like to get involved. We’ll connect you with the right person.

Together, Nashobans have always made the National a memorable event. Let’s make 2018 another Nashoba National to remember.

National Specialty Updateby Jim Todhunter, Show Chair - [email protected]

HOLIDAY PARTY VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for several volunteers to join the Holiday Party Committee. Looking for Santa helpers who can plan holiday party activities, raffles, and registration. For more information contact: Marguerite Massey, Holiday Party Chair at [email protected]

DRAFT TEST STEWARDS: Please let me know if you are willing to steward at our fall tests October 28 and 29. No experience is necessary and it’s a great way to learn about drafting. If you can’t commit to the whole weekend, that is fine. I will fill you in when you are available. Barb Gibson; Chief Steward at [email protected] or by phone (207) 882-9180

SEEKING BERNER TROPHY SPONSORS FOR 2018: The Berner Regional Specialty will be here before we know it! Welcome Bags for Nationals 2018

The National Specialty is right around the corner and the Welcome Bags are an important part. The attendees are always excited about receiving them and what is inside

them. We are reaching out to members/members friends who may own a business that has a product/service that they would like to promote. We are asking for promotional type items that would be a gift for the attendees. Some of the items we are thinking about: pens, spiral notebooks, rain ponchos, poop bags and poop bag holders, water bottles, coupons etc… We anticipate 700+ attendees that may seem like a lot for one business to provide. My thought is if we can get 14 business to provide 50 items a piece or 28 business to provide 25 items a piece we can cover those numbers and spread out the promotions. So I am asking if you own a business or know someone who does, that would like the opportunity to promote their business at the National in 2018 please email Stephanie Freeman at [email protected].

Fall Day!FU NSeptember 30th Westford, MA

On Saturday, September 30, 2017, a large crowd enjoyed one of the popular Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Nashoba Valley Fun Days. There is such a celebration in the Spring and, then, yesterday’s, in Autumn. Included with me and my nearly six years old Berner, Muesli, excited and full of the spirit of adventure and my nearly sixteen years old Appenzeller, Piber, who also enjoyed herself, albeit at a slower pace. Indeed, Piber demonstrated the usual Appenzeller penchant for rule setting when SHE determined in what positions she would tolerate being placed during her session with the professional pet photographer. A delicious breakfast which included coffee, hot apple cider, hot chocolate, muffins and sweet rolls kept the chilly air at bay. Paws & Shop Merchandise included sale items and shirts, vests, sweatshirts, hats, and more with the insignia for the 2018 National Specialty on them. I bought stationery, clothing, a necklace, Swiss canton bumper stickers and a calendar. The calendars were sold to raise money for the Bernese Mountain Dog rescue organization, Berner Inc. From the Raffle table, l took home three plaques and one framed picture of Swiss farm scenes. Two of them contain Appenzellers! A Canine Good Citizen test attracted Bernese

and other breeds of dogs. The Freestyle dance demonstration by Michelle Larson and trick dog demonstration by the Bates were appreciated by many spectators. Older pups and dogs played merrily in the corral securely fenced for this activity while their people eagerly watched and took pictures. The weather cooperated as the day became cool and cloudy and, of course, the Westford, Massachusetts 4-H Fairgrounds are very dog friendly. The puppy parade was masterfully handled with a short biography being read about each of the adorable youngsters. Joanne Brown of Big Bernese Photography was kept VERY busy by Berner and other dog owners as she took pictures of dogs placed against a lovely Autumn backdrop. A lunch of pizza, salad, and desserts satisfied many a hearty appetite. Fun Days are my favorite Club activities as they are educational events which are as welcome to the novice dog owner as to the decades long Bernese Mountain Dog fancier. You can be certain that as the day’s activities ended, happy families and their tired dogs traveled home to all of New England and New York long to remember the fun!

Fun Day is one of the best events we do because it brings together people who exhibit in conformation, do tracking, herding, carting, rally, dancing, draft and (to my mind the most important), people who want

to help their dogs live better lives. The Board cannot give enough thanks to the volunteers who put a huge effort into making this day a success for all who attend. At this event I think that we had a record number of new families who have Berners or want Berners. I hope that we made them

feel welcome and eager to participate in more activities.— Pat Buickerood; Pepperell, MA

Online sales of Berner puppies have landed them in the hands of casual buyers unprepared to raise them properly. These puppies grow into out-of-control young adults due to no training or socialization. Rather than going to classes or working with trainers to correct the problems they’ve created, the owners of these dogs give them up.

Online outlets allow bad breeders to deceive uninformed buyers about the puppies they’re purchasing sight-unseen. Obviously, these breeders have not factored temperament into their breeding “practices.” Some buyers unwittingly get a puppy that is inherently shy, unsocial or over-reactive. With immediate help from puppy classes and in-home sessions with a trainer, these puppies can adapt and become functioning adult Berners. Sadly, many of them do not get this early intervention and their behavior deteriorates.

Berners with behavior issues are listed and sold on craigslist (intact dogs are bought and bred indiscriminately); given away via Facebook and other social media to unsuitable homes; finally abandoned at shelters.

Some owners of Berners with behavior problems find rescues like Berner Inc. online and on our social media and ask us to rehome their dogs.

Some Berners have been passed around among several owners via social media; nothing was done to resolve behavior problems and they became entrenched. There are Berners we cannot save. Owners will hang on to Berners with behavior issues too long for them to be changed. Common are dogs with serious bite histories.

There are many Berners who are euthanized for behaviors that could have been changed: like the lack of basic manners and social skills; shyness and fear-based reactivity; dog-to-dog issues. These are the Berners we see more and more in rescue due to on-line puppy sales and social media give-aways and exchanges of young adult Berners. Berner Inc. believes that Berners with behavior problems deserve a chance to be evaluated for rehabilitation and placed in a loving, permanent home. These are among the Berners we are dedicated to save, if we can.

URGENT: SPECIAL FOSTERS NEEDEDBerner, Inc. needs fosters with experience handling and treating behavior problems. More and more Berners are coming into rescue with behavior issues. Some examples: a body-slamming, hard-mouthing, clothing-grabbing one-year-old; a food-guarding two-year old; a dog-reactive three-year-old; a morbidly shy, unsocialized four-year-old.

You don’t need to be professional trainers to foster special Berners--although we would welcome them! But you need to have the skills and experience to manage dogs with serious behavior problems, and to solve their problems to get them ready for adoption. You don’t need to have Berners yourselves to foster special needs Berners for us. But we require that our special fosters have experience working with the behavior issues of large-breed dogs. Berner Inc. will arrange sessions with trainers and behaviorists if needed. We will also pay the fees for training classes (including special ones like “growly dog” classes).

If we don’t have enough fosters to help us rescue and rehabilitate special needs Berners, we will have to turn some of them away.

If you can help Berner Inc. foster our special rescues, or if you can notify people who could help, please contact: Linda DeCelles, Rescue Chair, [email protected]. We’ll follow our usual foster application process: on-line application form, interview and home visit.

Thank you from every Berner who has been given an unfair start in life and deserves a chance to become a happy, lifelong Berner companion!
