2018 BMDCA National News

We’ve all heard the BMDCNV is hosting the 2018 BMDCA National Specialty Show. Many of our

members have never been to a National, and they ask “What is a National Specialty?”

Imagine a week long festival devoted to celebrating our beloved Berner breed. Up to one thousand people and as many Berners will attend the National. You can watch or compete in all sorts of activities: conformation events leading to the Best of Breed competition, obedience and rally trials, CGC tests, agility, draft tests, a draft workshop, tracking and herding. You can attend dozens of fascinating educational seminars at Berner-U. You can meet with friends old and new at the International Reception, Welcome Party, Awards Dinner, and Judges’ Dinner. You can attend and bid at the always exciting Health Fund Auction where you will be amazed by the array of Berner themed items. These events only begin to describe the fun you can have at the National, but the National Specialty is more than just events.

The National Specialty brings together our national Berner community. Fellow travelers come together from all over the country and the world with one common bond – the love of the Bernese Mountain Dog – and with one common goal – to revel in the Bernergeist. Be a part of this unique community of Berner enthusiasts. Meet up with old friends, make new friends, and make great National memories. I have many special memories from the Nationals I’ve attended. One of my favorites is bumping into Adam and Amy Conn at the 1998 National in Warwick and trying to control the enthusiasm of our dogs, good buddies Reuben and Panda. To this day, Adam and I still laugh about it.

Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Our Club hosts the National once every ten years, and the BMDCA will celebrate its 50th Anniversary at the 2018 National. Make your own memories at the 2018 National Specialty. Better yet, be a part of it all. BMDCNV and BMDCA volunteers help in ways big and small to make the National an event to remember. Find the role that fits you. Support our Berner community and become a part of the fabric of the 2018 National Specialty. Come to the Holiday Gathering and talk with 2018 Show Committee members to learn how you can become involved in National Specialty.

National Specialty Updateby Jim Todhunter, Show Chair - [email protected]

LAST CALL TO ALL CRAFTERS & ARTISANS: This year’s BMDCNV holiday gathering will be on December 11, 2016 at the Host Hotel in Sturbridge. For this year’s event, we are inviting all of you to share your special talents by creating unique handmade items for our Craft and Artisan Table. All of the proceeds will support the the BMDCA National Specialty in 2018. You set the value based on your time, talents, and materials. We will display your creations. Please consider “your specialty” (i.e., creating something with love that is uniquely you) and sharing the product of your talent and passion with your fellow BMDCNV members. To donate your items or get more information, please contact: Nancy and Linda Bates at [email protected] or (508) 415-2535.

SEEKING BERNER TROPHY SPONSORS FOR 2017: The Berner Regional Specialty will be here before we know it! If you would like to sponsor a trophy, please contact Donna Bennett, Trophy Chair at [email protected] or 860-235-5669. Please send your name and kennel name if you would like that included in the catalog with the trophy you wish to sponsor. All monies should be sent to Donna Bennett, 16 Mile Creek Rd, Old Lyme CT 06371. Please make the check out to BMDCNV.

SOCIAL MEDIA CHAIR: After two years, Karlo Laforteza will be stepping down as social media chair. He is looking for volunteers to train and take his place. Responsibilities include promoting BMDCNV events on the Facebook page, Facebook groups and Yahoo groups to increase awareness and membership. Lead other admins for other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. Coordinate with the Board, Berner Blatt editor and webmaster. Volunteers must be members of the BMDCNV or other Regional club for at least 1 year. All inquiries and applications can be sent to: [email protected]

2017 BMDCNV Elections

Nominating Slate

Name: Carolyn MasseyDate: September 20, 2016 Q: How long have you been a member of the BMDCNV? A: I have been a Member of BMDCNV since 2013.

Q: Are you a member of the BMDCA? A: Not currently, but I am planning on it.

Q: If elected, will you attend a majority of the scheduled board meetings? A: Yes, I will.

Q: What do you feel are the immediate concerns of the BMDCNV?

A: I would like to see new people attending events and in volunteer roles. I think it would be great if we had a mentor program in our club. Q: What do you feel should be the long term goals of the

BMDCNV? A: I think the long term goal of our club is to make sure people in New England are getting their dogs from reputable breeders, educating people on the health testing of our breed and why it is important. I also would like to see the size of our club grow and have more diverse membership. It’s been wonderful to belong to a club celebrating our 35th anniversary and I hope we can continue to promote the club/breed through events, webinars, newsletter and social media for many years to come.

Fall Day!FU NOctober 16th Westford, MA

A HUGE thanks to all our volunteers and helping hands for such a successful day! Thank you to Joanne Brown from Big Bernese Photography and Andrea Aldrich from Big Gentle Dogs for the photos!

Muesli, Piber and I thoroughly enjoyed the BMDCNV Annual Fall Fun Day. Though the temperature climbed in the afternoon, the morning's promise of cool seasonal weather was indeed fulfilled, especially ideal for the dogs participating in the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America Draft Test. We like to stroll around this large piece of property where many dog shows and livestock events are regularly held. Shopping was fruitful and fun with several vendors and a professional photographer present and the BMDCNV Ways and Means offered big savings on much of its fine merchandise. As always, the Club makes certain all who attend Fun Day are well fed! The fresh fruit salad served in the morning was delicious. Lunch consisted of pizza, salad, and sandwiches which were quite tasty! Though not searching for a Bernese, I listened to Martha Phelps talk to an attentive audience about how best to acquire a Bernese Mountain Dog for one's family. Martha is enthusiastic and her excellent presentation was well received, leaving a large audience mesmerized! Not to be missed were the Raffle, the chance to play in the ever popular Puppy Corral, and the Beginner Novice Obedience Workshop. Perhaps those who participated in these activities would like to offer comments about them.Muesli, Piber, and I are looking forward to the Club's Christmas party in December in Sturbridge, Massachusetts!

Thank you to everyone that helped make the fall draft test weekend a success! We lucked out

with the amazing weather and had fabulous entrants and volunteers. I really appreciate everyone that pitched in throughout the weekend and would especially like to thank:

• Our two judges, Julie Bacon and Jennifer Brightbill, who ran a fun, inviting test. • Linda and Nancy Bates who did a super job with the decorations for our theme “We Dig Carting”. • Sue Mahan, Stephanie Freeman, and Bill Freeman for all their hard work keeping us well fed and caffeinated (Thanks to Bill bringing over his Keurig!).• The Stewards, many of whom gave up the entire weekend to help us so we could put on this test: Lynn Jones, Lloyd Jones, Phil Atkinson, Cheryl Brickach, Jon Cons, Jeff Nowak, Jean Michael, Nancy Patterson, Laurie McDonough, Dawn Flaherty, Bill Freeman, and Steve Diers.• Barbie Wilzcek for helping with judge transport.• Marjorie Cottle for the amazing handmade trophies and ribbons, and Joe Bumen for making the trophy cut outs.• And especially especially Beth Atkinson who was our amazing test secretary, judge host, and transported (and helped set up) the draft equipment to and from the storage locker.

We would sincerely like to thank Valerie Chase for her very generous donation to be used for draft. She gave it in honor of Jon Cons, Margot Burwood, Bill Wilczek and Barbie Beck-Wilczek for all that they have done to promote draft and support draft tests in the Northeast. Thank You All!

Adoption News!BEAR IS ADOPTED!Bear is seven years

old. He has Wobblers Syndrome, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement. His original family asked Berner Inc. to rehome Bear because with two full-time jobs and two young children they felt they could not give Bear the attention a Wobblers dog needs.

Bear went to the home of Amy and Mark Matthieu, Berner, Inc. fosters. Amy is a veterinary technician and has the expertise and resources to care for Bear. The original owners generously offered to continue paying the premium on Bear’s pet insurance for the rest of his life.

Bear fit right into his foster home, which includes two other Berners. Before long, Amy and Mark decided to make Bear a permanent family member. Older Berners, especially those with medical issues, are often hard to place, so we’re grateful to Amy and Mark for giving Bear a happy home for the rest of his life.

MEET OUR NEWEST FOSTERS

BAERAt only 8 months old,

Baer needed corrective surgery on his shoulders and elbow. His former family had bought him from a backyard breeder. They could not afford the surgery. And there here are several young children in the home, with little time for training Baer. Despite his rocky start in life, Baer is a sweet and playful young Berner. And though he has lived his first months in constant pain, he has a bright spirit. His foster family will take him through the surgery and recovery. He enjoys hanging out with “Alicia,” his fosters’ adopted sheltie.

MAXMax came into rescue

without a name. Only about a year old, he had been a stray. After an unsuccessful search for an

owner by Animal Control, he was declared an abandoned dog. He was taken in by a Berner Inc. foster family, who named him Max. He’s a friendly and affectionate young Berner and enjoys his foster home. Max was diagnosed with Lyme disease and giardia, not surprising since he had been a stray for some time. He is recovering and growing. Max loves playing with Murphy, his foster brother.

KEELEYKeeley came to Berner Inc. when her family

moved and could not take her. An ear infection that had gone untreated by her former owners had generated painful blockages and embedded bacteria in both of Keeley’s ears. Surgery was the only way to repair them. Her surgeon said that her ear damage was among the worst he had ever seen. Her foster family is taking her through the surgery and recovery. Despite the pain she has endured, Keeley is a loving and happy four-year-old who wants to enjoy life.
