THINK SOLD, THINK EDRINA and the LADYBUG REALTORS!

Our family had the fortunate experience of having Edrina Fitting with Ladybug Realty help us find our new home. We had a hard deadline to find the perfect home for us. Despite the impending deadline and shortage of homes in the area, Edrina helped us hurdle the usual and unusual obstacles of to find and close on a home that was exactly what we were looking for.

Buying a home can be a stressful encounter, but with Edina’s knowledge, experience and client courtesy, she turned a stressful situation into a pleasant occurrence. Edrina was always there when we needed her and she was always more than happy to meet with us to view, inspect, or anything else we needed. Edrina helped us meet our deadline and walked us through each step of the process while always being friendly and compassionate.

I sincerely recommend Edrina Fitting and Ladybug Realty to anyone who needs to buy or sell a home. Not only did we find the perfect home for our family, we came out with a great new friend. – Charles R. Kyle Vance, Attorney at Law

for sharing you with us all these years. Now, we encourage you to kick back and enjoy that new grandbaby and the neighborhood you’ve helped build.

Community Watch Committee During the 2013 annual homeowner meeting, neighborhood security was a big topic. Board members and association members alike had a lot to share and learn. While the total number of recorded crimes in Bay Forest has only exceeded the historical high by one event, there has certainly been heightened attention and concern this year. Your responses to our annual survey have borne this out. Consequently, our Crime Watch committee will be focused during the next several months on what the facts are about crime in Clear Lake and in our neighborhood, what we are already doing, what other communities are doing, what Houston Police Department can tell us, what other security specialist offers, and what Bay Forest will do about community security in 2014. If you would like to take part in and contribute to this effort, please contact Gene Fisseler at [email protected].

Homeowners Top Issues• CRIME• Maintaining Homes• Maintaining Common Open Areas• Maintaining Property Values• Replace Perimeter Wall• Street Parking

Homeowner Property MaintenanceWhat has been done?• Re-launched deed enforcement (CCRs) program.

What else can we do?• Even more diligent deed enforcement ▪ Strategic deed enforcement ▪ Identify top offenders and focus on remediation and

sustainability ▪ Engage other entities: City of Houston, HPD, HFD, insurance companies

We want to be fair, but we must be firm – this affects all of us.

Common Area MaintenanceWhat has been done?• Regular Inspections and maintenance activities – thanks to

new manager.• Bay Forest Days – have held a few in 2013 – very well

attended. ▪ Saves Money – gets the jobs done – and builds community

Perimeter Fence• Still acceptable condition today ▪ Will eventually reach end of life ▪ Competition pressures may prevail• Replacement cost ~$1.1 million ($1,000+ per home)• Avoid funding with special assessment or with debt• Setting aside $100K per year ▪ 10 year plan – build reserve by 2020• Evaluate reserve fund, fence condition, etc. annually ▪ Chances are we’ll have to do something before 2020… but when/if we do, we’ll have some of the $$ in the bank and can determine then how best to cover the rest of the cost.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month This month the Bay Forest Yard of the Month club has some tips for you on things you can do in your garden now to prepare for winter frost and spring blooms. Next month we will be driving around again looking for amazing Holiday Decorations. If you think your neighbor has a beautiful “holiday” yard, please send their address to [email protected]. We LOVE to get your nominations. If you are interested in joining our committee we'd love to have you. Please send your name and contact information to [email protected].

If you haven't already, this is a good time to prune Azaleas. Azaleas bud where they are cut, so go ahead and trim. You'll be rewarded with lots of blooms in the spring.

There is still time, if you hurry, to plant Strawberries. They like slightly acid, rich loose soil with good drainage. Set the crown even with the soil level, then mulch with straw to keep the fruit clean.

Now is an excellent time to divide and re-plant (maybe share with a neighbor?) your garlic and chives.

Iris does well when planted in early November.

Pansies are very popular in Bay Forest. They will do very well when planted after the weather has cooled, so any time now should be fine.

Roses should be fed lightly, but do not use nitrogen. Resist the urge to prune them now. The plant will be stronger if you wait until February. Continue to water.

Prepare now for frosty weather later. Mulch your beds to help keep the soil at an even temperature. Have sheets ready to cover delicate shrubs and plants in case of a freeze warning. Plastic should never rest directly on a plant, so if you choose to cover in plastic, be sure to first use an old bed sheet or layers of newspaper to protect the plant. Plastic should be removed daily during a cold snap so the plants don't overheat when the sun comes out. Watering plants deeply right before a frost will help to insulate the roots.

Perennials in general will benefit from being cut back after blooming is finished. This allows the plant to put all its energy toward its root structure. If you are thinking of transplanting any perennials, fall or winter in general is a good time to move them, but moving now, rather than in February, gives the plants a chance to settle in and gives you beautiful blooms in the spring or summer.

Tulip bulbs need to have a long, cold, dry, rest before they will bloom. So, if you have any, now is the time to dig them up, brush them off (do not clean with water!), and put them in a paper bag in your refrigerator for at least 6 weeks. This seasonal nap will allow the bulbs to form strong root systems which will lead to fabulous flowers in the Spring. Plant in late December through mid-January.

The Bay Forest Oktoberfest was held on Saturday, October 26, at the pool park. This was a joint event sponsored by the Bay Forest Mommies Club and the Bay Forest Community Association, along with Edrina Fitting.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect! There were delicious bratwurst sausages along with hot dogs, plus lots of soft-baked pretzels dusted with either cinnamon-sugar or salt. Kids played in the park, decorated pumpkins, and munched on various Halloween treats. The adults got a chance to welcome new people to the neighborhood and visit with old friends. Every once in a while, we would get the chance to observe one or more of the planes that flew overhead from the Wings over Houston Air Show at Ellington Field. All-in-all it was a great afternoon.

If you have never taken the time to come to one of these neighborhood-sponsored events in our neighborhood, please do so at the next opportunity. Just walk up with a smile on your face, and someone will usually come over to say ‘hello.’ If no one does, then you are welcome to walk up to them, and introduce yourself. This is a wonderfully friendly neighborhood. Every chance that we get to make new connections with other families in our neighborhood adds to that core friendliness and to the strength of our neighborhood!

Many thanks to the three sponsors of Bay Forest Oktoberfest 2013!

COMMUNITY WATCH ALERTOn Sunday evening, October 13, before 10 pm, multiple vehicles in the 2000 block of Park Grand were burglarized. The vehicles were parked outdoors (on driveways) and left unlocked. Small amounts of money (change) and other items were reported taken. Video surveillance showed a white young male adult opening a pickup truck passenger door and removing items. There were no images recorded of the vehicle being used or others who might have been involved.

Reports were filed with Houston Police Department and HPD officers reminded our neighbors to park their vehicles in secure or well-lighted areas and to always lock them.

REMEMBER - IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING! If you see any suspicious activity in Bay Forest, contact HPD

(call 911) or 713-884-3131 (Non-emergency)

REMEMBER: If you have a home alarm system, don't forget to activate the alarm when you leave the house. This will usually deter a home burglary.

Come meet Santa Claus at the Bay Forest Family Holiday Party!Sunday, December 15, 2013

2:00 - 4:00 pmWillow Shores Park

Everyone is welcome! Of course, Santa Claus is the main attraction, but we'll have crafts and games for the kids to play too. Each family is asked to bring a snack to share. Additional important information on how to ensure that

Santa has a gift for your child will be distributed through the Mommies Group e-mail. If you are not in this e-mail group it is very important that you contact Anita Burns (even last minute) for specific information on party activities. We do not want any children to be disappointed because Santa didn't know they were coming. This is very important! Santa never wants to miss a child, and the elves don't pack spare gifts!

Meanwhile, to help get into the Christmas Spirit, here are some pictures from last year's party for you to enjoy.

Clear Creek ISD launches Latitude 2 Learnhttp://www.yourhoustonnews.com/bay_area/news/clear-creek-isd-launches-latitude-learn/article_c278d9cf-54bc-569d-9c8f-6fa720781ad8.html

In the Clear Creek Independent School District, education is a joint partnership between school and home. This partnership is paramount to the success of the District’s new one computer per student initiative known as Latitude 2 Learn, Personalized Learning in CCISD.

The District will begin a three-year implementation plan to provide students in grades 4 and up a Dell Latitude 10 tablet computer to complement and enhance teacher developed lessons. In grades 6 through 12, students will be allowed to bring their computers home. This summer the District initiated a parent advisory group to help guide the decision-making on internet filters at home, a “worry-free” optional insurance program, and parent orientations.

“This group of parents was committed to the charge before them and provided the District invaluable input on how a teaching tool in the classroom can positively impact parent involvement,” said Dr. Steven Ebell, Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. “The group addressed concerns and unknowns that had been brought forward from parents. We are grateful for their input and their recommendations have been fully implemented.”With students bringing the tablets home, some parents were concerned about whether they would be financially liable if the device was accidently lost, stolen, broken or damaged in any way. While Dell Computers provides a robust warranty on the device for two years and a theft prevention program has been implemented, the parent advisory group felt parents should be offered the ability to participate in an optional insurance program to protect the public’s investment as well as provide a worry free guarantee for parents.

This fall, parents may opt into this program through a $25.00 annual, non-refundable, payment per device. This insurance program is offered to parents with students in grades 6 through 12 as the District-owned devices will be brought home. The $25.00 annual, non-refundable, insurance payment is per device. If a parent/guardian purchases insurance for their student(s) Dell Latitude tablet computer, the parent/guardian would not be liable for the replacement and repair costs associated with accidental damage.

The parent advisory group recommended the same internet filter used in schools should be installed on all student issued devices. For example, if a student accesses the internet from home or in a public place, the District’s filter will block the same websites and content parents would expect at school. The internet filter is compliant with the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act.

The parent advisory council also recommended orientations be held both online and at the campus level to ensure families understand the goals of the initiative as well as their responsibilities at home. Parents will be required to sign an acknowledgement form before a student is issued a Dell Latitude 10 tablet computer.

Parent Orientation meetings will take place at every comprehensive high school in CCISD. The Parent Orientation meeting for parents of 9th and 10th graders at Clear Lake HS will take place on Monday, November 11th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the MB Commons. Parents are welcome to attend any of the orientation meetings scheduled at the other CCISD high schools in order to meet schedules and time constraints.

Online:The parent informational meetings are highly encouraged, but not required. If you cannot attend one of the parent meetings, an online orientation is currently available for parents.

Click to view Online Orientation Video and Responsible Use Guidelines

Live Web Stream:A live web stream will be held on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:30 pm via www.ccisd.net.

Required Forms Before a student receives a Dell Latitude 10 tablet computer, a parent/guardian is required to complete the following forms and make a payment if they elect the Optional Insurance for the tablet computer. This entire process can be completed through CCISD4Me for Parents. Click here if you do not have an account. If you cannot access the internet you may download the following forms, signandreturntothefrontofficeofyourchild'sschool.Itisimportant this process is completed before January 6, 2014.

Vote in the November ElectionOn November 5, 2013 the regular polling place just inside the door of the Clear Lake High School 9th Grade Center located on Falcon Pass will be open at 7 am. As usual, I would recommend you vote early, if possible. Starting this year the law requires presentation of a picture ID to vote. There are several valid options with the most common being: a Texas driver's license, Texas ID card, any military ID, Naturalization Papers (with photo), or your US Passport For your convenience, click here to a sample ballot specific to our precinct. There are several sites which offer pro and con assessments of the various propositions. I would encourage you to take the time to visit one of them and become informed. Finally, history shows that many of us will not exercise our franchise because this is a local election. It takes time to look at the propositions and investigate the background of those running for office let alone going to the poll. However, you might want to think about the following. If only fifteen percent of the voters turn out, you can safely bet they are the ones with an agenda they are trying to push. If you don't become informed and vote, the 15% with an itch will determine factors that will determine your future life and lifestyle. If we allow the minority to determine how the majority will live we are negating the principles inherent in our system. Our system is designed to protect the rights of the minority from the will of the majority, not the other way around. Thanks in advance for your participation! Robert D. Jones, ChairmanPrecinct 0306 (Bay Forest)

Some of you may not be aware that my husband Mike was diagnosed last year with stage 4 cancer. However, many of you are probably aware that the key to beating cancer is early detection. That's why I volunteered to help lead the effort to create the Pinknic fundraising event to benefit The Rose, the leading nonprofit breast health care organization in southeast Texas, providing mammograms and other services to more than 30,000 people each year. Please join me in helping to support early cancer detection!

Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to seeing you there! Sincerely,Beth DennardBright Futures Consulting, LLC
