• Leverkusen have played 17 games against Spanish teams, winning six, drawing three, and losing eight.

• The German club's first trip to Spain witnessed one of their most memorable results, a 1-0 triumph at FC Barcelonawhich secured an aggregate success by the same scoreline in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup quarter-finals. Erich Ribbeck'smen overcame another Catalan side in the final, RCD Espanyol, to collect their first continental trophy, but were denieda second by Primera División opponents when losing the 2002 UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid CF.That game was played at Hampden Park, the venue for this season's UEFA Cup final.

• Leverkusen's last appearance in a European quarter-final was in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League as theybeat Liverpool FC 4-3 on aggregate en route to a final appearance - and a 2-1 defeat - against Real Madrid CF. Thisis their third appearance in a UEFA Cup quarter-final.

• This is Osasuna's first appearance in a European quarter-final.

• Leverkusen have won their last three European home games since the club's former striker Dimitar Berbatov scoredthe winner in a 1-0 victory for Tottenham Hotspur FC in the UEFA Cup group stage on 23 November.

• Osasuna are unbeaten in their last three European away games since losing 3-1 at RC Lens in the UEFA Cup groupstage on 2 November.

• Leverkusen have not won a European away fixture since a 2-0 victory at Maccabi Haifa FC in the 2002/03 UEFAChampions League first group stage. Their subsequent 15 away games have failed to yield a victory.

• Osasuna have won their last three European home games since being held to a 0-0 draw at home by SC Heerenveenin the UEFA Cup group stage. They have not lost a home game in Europe since a 1-0 defeat against eventual winnersAFC Ajax in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup third round, seven games ago.

• Argentinian-born striker Bernardo Romeo could prove a useful asset for Osasuna. The 29-year-old, who holds anItalian passport, played in the Bundesliga with Hamburger SV between 2002 and 2005 before joining Osasuna. Duringthose years, he played alongside Leverkusen's veteran Bosnia-Herzegovnian midfielder Sergej Barbarez.

• Karim Haggui is available again for Leverkusen after serving a one-match suspension, but a booking at the BayArenawould mean team-mates Sergej Barbarez, Tranquillo Barnetta, Gonzalo Castro and Andriy Voronin missing the secondleg.

• Yellow cards could easily prove costly for Osasuna with eight players within a caution of a one-match ban. EnriqueCorrales, Javier Flaño, Raúl García, David López, Valdo, Josetxo Romero, Roberto Soldado and Pierre Webó mustbe on their best behaviour.

• England, still represented in this season's competition by Tottenham Hotspur FC, and Germany, with Leverkusenand Werder Bremen flying the flag, have each won the UEFA Cup on six occasions. Italy are out in front as the mostsuccessful nation with nine triumphs, although they can no longer add to that haul this season.

• The second leg will be played on 12 April. The aggregate winners will face Sevilla FC or Tottenham Hotspur FC inthe semi-finals, staging the home leg on 26 April before playing the return away on 3 May. The UEFA Cup final willbe held at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on 16 May.

Trophy handoverExcitement in Glasgow is mounting as the UEFA Cup was handed over to the city and the countdown to the final atHampden Park began in earnest. UEFA's ad interim Chief Executive Gianni Infantino received the trophy from holdersSevilla FC on 16 March ahead of the draw for the quarter-finals and beyond. The silverware was handed back to MrInfantino who subsequently passed it on to Glasgow's Lord Provost Liz Cameron to display in the city until the day ofthe final. "I would like to take the opportunity to thank the local organising committee, the city of Glasgow and allScottish football fans for the way they have prepared for this final," said Mr Infantino. "We are all looking forward toanother unforgettable night of football at Hampden Park on 16 May."

It is the first time that Glasgow has hosted a UEFA Cup final although the city has already staged five European finals, most famously the 1960 European Champion Clubs' Cup final when Real Madrid CF defeated FC Eintracht Frankfurt7-3 in front of a record 121,261 crowd at Hampden. Welcoming the trophy to Glasgow, Cameron highlighted theimportance of attracting events of this calibre to the city.

Mr Infantino also made a statement on behalf of UEFA, saying: "So far this season we have seen many thrillingmatches which have been followed by increasing levels of television viewers and spectators across Europe. Paramountto maintaining such levels of interest is preserving and promoting the values of sport. Unfortunately we have latelywitnessed unacceptable scenes both inside and around the stadiums. We would like to make a plea to all of you –clubs, players, officials and fans - to promote the core values of our game in the spirit of fair play, loyalty and respect, thus setting the right example for future generations."

UEFA Cup ballNike has announced a partnership with UEFA whereby the sportswear manufacturer will provide the official matchball for the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup competitions for the next three seasons. The Mercurial Veloci UEFACup will be used for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the competition, starting this season. The visual designof the Mercurial Veloci UEFA Cup ball has been created to closely replicate the overall visual identity of the 2007UEFA Cup, with purple and green colour bands on the white ball combined with the Nike swoosh and UEFA Cuplogo. The ball is being supplied as part of the three-year agreement between Nike and UEFA.

Team facts

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

UEFA club competition milestones• Leverkusen's most memorable season to date in the UEFA Cup came in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup and a final whichthey ultimately won on penalties following one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the competition. The Germanside had defeated FK Austria Wien, Toulouse FC, Feyenoord, FC Barcelona and SV Werder Bremen to set up a finalengagement against RCD Espanyol. The Spanish side raced to a three-goal success in the opening leg in Barcelonawith Sebastián Losada (44, 56) and Miguel Soler (48) on target. Victory looked assured, especially as the return legremained scoreless until the interval, but Leverkusen hit back with a three-goal salvo of their own from Milton Tita(56), Falko Götz (63) and Bum-Kun Cha (81). No further goals came from open play during extra time before Leverkusenprevailed 3-2 after penalties, leaving Espanyol to ponder what might have been.

The visitors would end the game with nine men while Leverkusensealed the win thanks to Bernd Schneider's successful spot-kick four minutes from time.

CA Osasuna

UEFA club competition milestones• Prior to the current season, Osasuna's best European season saw them advance to the third round of the 1991/92UEFA Cup following defeats of FC Slavia Sofia and VfB Stuttgart only to lose 2-0 on aggregate against AFC Ajax.

UEFA club competition honours• None

Ten-year record (including current season)• Osasuna are involved in UEFA club competitions for the second time in the past decade and for their fourth seasonoverall. They debuted in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup and appeared in the same competition again in both the 1991/92and 2005/06 seasons. This term, Osasuna started their season in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, but followingan away goals defeat against German side Hamburger SV who advanced to the UEFA Champions League, thePamplona-based side had to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup.

• UEFA Champions League hopes were dashed earlier this season by Hamburg who advanced from the EuropeanChampion Clubs' Cup third qualifying round on away goals at Osasuna's expense. The Spanish side looked to havegained a slender advantage by first holding their hosts to a scoreless draw in the opening leg and by then taking thelead after six minutes in the return through Javier Cuéllar only for Nigel de Jong to equalise for Hamburg 15 minutesfrom time. Osasuna thus moved to the UEFA Cup first round where they earned a 2-2 draw away against Trabzonsporin the opening leg with Valdo and Juanlu providing the Spanish side with a two-goal lead only for Gökdeniz Karadenizand substitute Umut Bulut to hit back to salvage a draw. There were no goals in the return as Osasuna advanced tothe group stage for the first time.

• Osasuna recovered from taking one point from their first two UEFA Cup group stage matches at home to SCHeerenveen (0-0) and away to RC Lens (1-3) to finish with two victories at the expense of Odense BK (3-1) and ParmaFC (3-0). The first victory came at the Reyno de Navarra stadium in Pamplona with Patxi Puñal (29 and 67 minutes)opening the scoring before he reduced the deficit thanks to an own goal 15 minutes from time. Any hopes of an OBfightback were extinguished three minutes from time when Bernardo Romeo added Osasuna's third. Their final outingprovided a comfortable three-goal win against the already-qualified Parma with David López (33 and 44) netting twicebefore Juanfran got on the scoresheet eight minutes from time. Nevertheless, Parma advanced as group winners onnine points, two points clear of Osasuna with Lens a further three points adrift in third.

2005/06 seasonDomestic record: The Pamplona-based side edged out Sevilla FC for fourth place in the Spanish Primera Divisióndue to their superior head-to-head record. FC Barcelona won the league with 82 points from 38 outings with RealMadrid CF (70 points), Valencia CF (69) and Osasuna (68) trailing in their wake.

European record: Osasuna featured in the first round of the UEFA Cup, but following a 3-1 away defeat againstFrench side Stade Rennais FC and a subsequent scoreless draw in Pamplona, they failed to advance to the groupstage of the competition.

Competition information

The UEFA Cup grew out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and was first held in 1971/72. The UEFA Cup is open to theholders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners ofnational cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matchesin the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League and 16 clubs eliminated from the third qualifyinground of the UEFA Champions League. The eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League groupstage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase.

• Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregateof goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number ofgoals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure doesnot produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periodsof 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same numberof goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks fromthe penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditionaltwo-match knockout format resumes, until the final. The 2006/07 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, semi-finals and final drawwas held in Glasgow on 16 March. The Scottish city will stage this year's final at Hampden Park on 16 May. Beforethen, the quarter-finals will be held on 5 and 12 April, with the semi-finals taking place on 26 April and 3 May.
