OVERVIEW Specialisations
SME’s custom manufacturing capabilities have evolved to being a high-level product supplier to reputable clients in various sectors.
Parts and assemblies are mostly custom designed with very specific process requirements and manufactured to client drawings, with high quality requirements. SME is also a turnkey high-level system supplier from inception to commissioning. Our production facility in Koedoespoort is well equipped with various welding bays (MIG & TIG) to cater for most ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as structural steels, cast iron, stainless, aluminium, armour plate etc.
Other key facilities are robot welding, press brakes, laser cutting, guillotines, paint facility, product/system assembly, climate chamber and QC area.
CUSTOM DESIGN & MANUFACTURING
SME specialises in custom high-efficiency industrial, rail and military heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for use in adverse environmental conditions. Designs include stand-alone/ bolt-on modular or integrated HVAC systems for rail locomotives and coaches, cash in transit vehicles, military armoured personnel carriers as well as mobile and stationary support systems. Applications are extended to environmental control systems (ECS) for plant equipment, ground control shelters and also panel mount coolers for sensitive electronic racks and power panels.

SME has the multi-discipline engineering capability in design, development, manufacturing, commissioning and long-term support. This great offering provides sound turnkey solutions in the integrated environment of mechanical, electrical and control system engineering. Our products and services meet only the highest standards as we seek greater achievements in quality, innovation and progress.
EPCM & TURNKEY SOLUTIONS
Development of product and application specific control systems. These include our own Multi-Application Controller (SmartMAC), aircon controller (PLC); CAN Bus & RS485 communications; LAN & Bluetooth communication interfaces. We also manufacture system related distribution boards (DB); PLC & control panels; customised man machine interface (MMI) consoles; custom gensets and auxiliary power units (APUs). Extensive factory acceptance and testing form an integral part of our ability to warrant a high-level of reliability.
All products are subjected to various simulated harsh environments in our climate control centre. Shock, vibration and EMI/EMC qualification are also done as dictated by the client or application.

ACU (Air-Conditioning Unit) System Assembly
The two ACU System Assemblies are integrated in cavities in the roof on the outside of the coach. Both units deliver cooled or heated air into the central ducting and gives the advantage of redundancy in case of one system failure.
The Coach Ducting Assembly
The ducting is mounted in the ceiling void of the coach and distributes ventilation of cool/heated air evenly throughout the coach. For the sleeper coaches the vents are adjustable to regulate flow from 15% - 100%.
Adjustable Cowl With Heater Elements
The Adjustable Cowl with Heater Elements is situated in the roof panels on the inside of the sleeper compartments of the coach. Its purpose is to act as the exit point of the ducting that supplies heating and ventilation to the inside of the coach.
Ceiling Integrated Air Handling Unit
The Air Handling Unit supplies 5-9kW cooling or heating by means of a water/glycol medium liquid supplied from a chiller/heated reservoir. The configuration can be either a single or dual pipe circuit to allow for separate or combined heating/cooling.

ITEM DESCRIPTION
Modular Drinking Water Cooler Integrated in Coach HVACThe Water Cooler is a low temperature evaporator coil/tank assembly which is connected to the Coach Air Conditioning refrigerant circuit. This fresh water tank could typically hold 20-80 litres of fresh clean water. 2-4kW is needed to cool water from 30°C to 10°C in less than 30 minutes.
