In the summer of 1932, on the banks of Minnesota’s Gilead River, Odie O’Banion is an orphan confined tothe Lincoln Indian Training School, a pitiless place where his lively nature earns him the superintendent’swrath. Forced to flee after committing a terrible crime, he and his brother, Albert, their best friend, Mose, and a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippiand a place to call their own. Over the course of one summer, these four orphans journey into the unknown and cross paths withothers who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lostsouls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic, This Tender Land is an enthralling, big-hearted epicthat shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes uswhole.

JULY 15

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to beginan enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order ofbusiness is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as asurprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assuredMaeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings arethrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on isone another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts theirfutures. Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people whocannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only trulycomfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of whatthey’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left thembehind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

Out of 24 Limoges' Purple Martin gourds, there appear tobe 19 active nests with NO eggs. Interesting since lastyear at this time, there were 18 nests in which 4 hadeggs for a total of 14 eggs. Perhaps the cooler springweather has played a role in this. Stay tuned!

Tips for Attracting HummingbirdsAdapted from Birds and Blooms

Try thinking like a hummingbird to attract these tiny gems toyour garden.

Plant Red FlowersIn North America, the flowers best adapted for hummingbirdpollination are bright red blooms with a tubular shape.Hummingbirds instinctively watch for red things andinvestigate them. (They've been known to make detours tocheck out the taillights of parked cars, and even someone’ssunburned nose!) There’s no question that planting redflowers will attract hummingbirds.

Offer Sugar WaterYou can buy hummingbird nectar, but you can easily makeyour own. Measure out 1 part white sugar to 4 parts waterand mix thoroughly. If you boil the mixture to removeimpurities, it may keep longer before it starts to spoil. Anddon’t mix in any honey, red dye or other additives whenfeeding hummingbirds. Simple sugar and water work justfine.Make Feeders Easy to FindHummingbirds are always looking around for food sources, and they’re good at finding them, but you’ll have more luckattracting hummingbirds if you put feeders in a place whereit’s easy to spot. Use a hummingbird feeder with some brightred on it, and position it where it can be seen by birds flyingpast at a distance.

Bombay Hook And Prime HookNational Wildlife Refugesrepresent the very best of Delaware. If you haven’t been to either, now is thebest time to go. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge protects 16,000 acres of tidal saltmarsh on the Delaware Bay and was established in 1937. It is now animportant link in a chain of East Coast refuges that follow the Atlantic Flyway(established based on routes to facilitate management of migratory birds andtheir habitats). Bombay Hook owes its existence to an African Americancompany of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Corps-built refuge causewaysand dikes, cleared undergrowth and planted more than 50,000 seedling trees.Besides that, they built a 90-foot observation tower and Roosevelt’s ArmyCorps erected a boathouse, two houses and a headquarters building. Each Spring and fall seasons, resident birds are joined by thousands ofmigratory birds. January brings Red-tailed, marsh and rough-legged hawks, bald eagles and whitetail deer herds. February and March herald the arrival oflarge flocks of Pintail ducks, snow geese and Canada geese. With the first mildweather Woodchucks and turtles emerge from hibernation. One can see Aldersand red Maples flowers and the Deer ticks emerge. April is when the bald eagleeggs hatch, and spring songbird migration begins. Purple Martins return. May,June and July display peak concentrations of shore birds; horseshoe crabs moveonto the bay and begin laying eggs and the first whitetail deer fawns are seen.Diamondback Terrapins lay eggs, water lilies bloom and many duck broods arepresent in Bear Swamp Pool. August heralds the arrival of green-winged andblue-winged teals and a significant increase of shorebirds. Cardinal flowers.Rose mallow and meadow beauties are in full bloom. September paves the wayfor late migrating birds and the first Canada geese arrive. October is the bestmonth to see Avocets and large numbers of Canada and Snow geese.November is the peak month for fall waterfowl migration. Besides the usualgeese, mallards, black duck, pintail, buffleheads and the hooded merganser areseen. December showcases eagles perched on leafless branches. Bombay Hook was once called “Boompies Hoeck” (Little Tree Point) by Dutchsettlers.

Prime Hook is not as large and expansive as Bombay Hook but equals it inshowcasing wildlife and migratory and shore birds. It is an inviolate sanctuaryexpressly for migratory birds, located east of Milton, DE. It was established in1963 on 10,000 acres along the western shore of Delaware Bay. Prime Hook contains a variety of habitats, including freshwater and salt watermarshes, woodlands, grasslands, ponds and forested areas and supports 267species of birds, a variety of reptiles, amphibians and 36 different mammals. The intensively managed freshwater impoundments have become an importantstop-over sites for spring and fall migrating shorebirds and wading birds.Winter is a great time to see waterfowl, winter finches, sparrows and HermitThrush. Harbingers of Spring are the Ospreys and Laughing Gulls. The first twoweeks of May are the real migration peaks for over 100 species of birds in aday. In summer Shorebirds leave, some return and some breed at Prime Hook.Willets breed on the Refuge. Fall heralds the long migration season. Woodlandmigrants begin arriving in August along with shorebirds. Waterfowl and raptorsarrive from September through November. From a bird perspective at Prime Hook, birds that feed on fish, such as theForster’s Tern have expanded dramatically, since the breaches have allowedmany small fish from Delaware Bay to enter the impoundments and reproduce.Bird species seen in much higher numbers includes herons, egrets, terns andgulls. Why is it called “Prime Hook”? When Dutch settlers arrived at Prime Hook, theydiscovered an abundance of purple beach plums. So, they called the area“Prime Hoek”, meaning Plum Point.

This series of articles over the next year is intended to provide you with basic lawn care information. The majority of your lawncare program is covered by the HOA contract with SHORE Property Maintenance. Services included in the HOA contract willbe in GREEN text for your reference. Optional Services will be in RED text. There are additional treatment programs that should be done to keep your lawn healthy and looking its best. These "OptionalServices" will also be covered in the articles. Each article will be broken down into sections, e.g. lawn care, irrigation, weedcontrol, optional treatments. The article for the 'Lawn Care Corner' will deal with each activity broken down by a three-month period. That way you will beinformed about what is being done under the HOA Board-approved landscape contract and will be able to consider optionalservices ahead of time, weighing the cost vs benefit and make the necessary arrangements with your selected lawn carecompany if you choose to have them done.

LAWN

CARE

CORNER

THE

Introduction

This is the perfect time to consider the overall health of your lawn and what it looked liked over the past season, especiallyduring the summer, a period of stress due to higher temperatures and limited natural rainfall. Was your lawn thick andbasically free of weeds or were there bare spots and more than 25% weeds. If the latter was the case, it is recommended thatyou take some action during the upcoming year to improve the appearance and overall health of your lawn.

April - June

Grass begins to grow during this period due to rising soil temperatures and increased sunlight. As your lawn 'wakes up' itgrows vigorously. During this period slow release granular fertilizer that was applied in late-fall provides good root growthand some green up in the spring. This is the ideal time to develop deeper roots for your lawn. Watering frequency should bereduced to two times/week, which forces the grass to search deeper for water during the moderate temperatures of April thrumid-May. The best time to water is before dawn, no later than mid-morning, to maximize absorption by the lawn. Regularwatering late in the day or early evening often leads to the development of fungus and should not be done.

Lawn Care

The pattern(s) used to mow your lawn should be varied regularly to minimize soil compression. Mower blade height duringthis period should be approximately three inches. Collecting grass clippings minimizes the development of thatch in thelawn.

Mowing

by Kim McKee

Page 11: Bay Front › sites › bayfront › file › ...Association, Bay Front HOA. We currently accept dues payments on behalf of the Association in the form of cash, check, money order,

System startup and initial adjustments of programs and head adjustmentsare performed. Sandy soil requires more frequent watering, about ½ inchof water every third day, this is about 25 minutes/zone. As summerapproaches, temperatures increase, watering frequencyrecommendation: three times a week in full sun locations, less in shadedareas. No irrigation should be done the day before and the day thatyour lawn is mowed to minimize soil compression or turf damage by theweight of the commercial mowers.

Irrigation

Cool season grasses grow most vigorously during the spring and fall, it's best to provide an even source of nitrogen [N] duringthese periods. Slow release/granular N helps grass recover from winter dormancy. Application of granular fertilizer with pre-emergent weed control is applied in early spring before seeds from the previous season germinate [crabgrass & other annualweeds]. This weed control agent creates a barrier of protection, if the barrier is broken [e.g., trimming/edging along drives andwalks] weed seeds can germinate.

Fertilization

LAWN

CARE

CORNER

Post-emergent & broadleaf liquid weed control are applied prior to mowing to provide time for the product to be absorbed bythe weeds. Liquid is the best method to coat the surface of the leaves - the lawn should not be irrigated immediately followingthis application. These products should not be applied during temperatures in excess of 85° - which could potentially damagegrass as well. Wilting/discolored leaves on weeds is normally seen within 2-3 days of application.

Weeds

Perennial weeds, e.g., Dallis grass, wire grass, etc. that are present could treated to prevent spreading during the summermonths. Core Aeration only could be done at this time - but over-seeding is not recommended in the spring.

Optional Treatments

Page 12: Bay Front › sites › bayfront › file › ...Association, Bay Front HOA. We currently accept dues payments on behalf of the Association in the form of cash, check, money order,

The pattern(s) used to mow your lawn should be varied regularly to minimize soil compression. Mower blade height duringthis period should be approximately four inches. About 1/3 of the grass blade height should be cut at each mowing - onecutting/week accomplishes proper mowing during this period. If more than this amount of growth is removed it should becollected to minimize the development of thatch in the lawn.

Lawn Care

LAWN

CARE

CORNER

Sandy soil requires more frequent watering, about ½ inch of water every third day, about 25 minutes/zone. During the heat ofthe summer watering frequency recommendation: three times a week in full sun locations, less in shaded areas. No irrigationshould be done the day before and the day that your lawn is mowed to minimize soil compression or turf damage by the weightof the commercial mowers.

Irrigation

Liquid fertilization with broadleaf weeds control agent(s) should be applied every 6-8 weeks in areas with sandy soil. Irrigationshould not be done within 24 hours of application.

Fertilization

During this period your lawn can be stressed by the higher temperatures andreduction in natural rainfall. The development of deeper root growth[undertaken in the spring and fall] will help your lawn weather these conditionsand remain green without more frequent watering. Daily watering, whichleads to the development of shallow roots in your lawn, is NOTrecommended. During extended periods of high temperatures, with no or littlenatural rainfall, an additional irrigation day may be required [if the lawn isobserved to begin browning from these summer conditions].

July - September

Broadleaf liquid weed control agent(s) are applied prior to mowing to provide time for the product to be absorbed by theweeds. Liquid is the best method to coat the surface of the leaves - irrigation should not be done within 24 hours of applicationto allow weeds to absorb the weed control. These products should not be applied during temperatures in excess of 85° - whichcould potentially damage grass as well. Wilting/discoloration of leaves on weeds is normally seen within 2-3 days ofapplication.

Weeds

Any perennial weeds, e.g., Dallis grass, wire grass, etc. that are present should be treated to prevent spreading during thesummer months. A lawn rejuvenation program could be undertaken in September if there are large areas of weeds or barespots.

Optional Treatments

Page 13: Bay Front › sites › bayfront › file › ...Association, Bay Front HOA. We currently accept dues payments on behalf of the Association in the form of cash, check, money order,

LAWN

CARE

CORNER

While both slit seeding and aeration can help rejuvenate your lawn, they each serve a different purpose. Slit seeding is allabout planting grass seed for the fastest, most thorough growth of new grass. Aeration addresses a deeper issue, literally, byreducing soil compaction, increasing activity of soil microorganisms and increasing fertilization uptake, creating healthier lawn.

September-November is a great time to overseed your lawn. The soil is stillwarm and the air is cool. There’s moisture in the air. It’s the end of thegrowing season, so weeds are weakening. It’s the perfect combination forgrass seeds to germinate and turf to take root quickly.

September - November: Lawn Rejunvenation

Slit Seeding v. Aeration and Overseeding: Which is best for your lawn?

A slit seeder slices into the soil with steel blades creating furrows. Then it drops the grass seed into the furrows. This methodputs the seed directly in contact with the soil. As the machine lays down the seed, teeth work it into the soil which providesbetter seed/soil contact which yields a better seed germination rate.

Silt Seeding

If your lawn is patchy, with areas of thin or no grass, slit seeding is the best option. The slit seeder offers the best seed-to-soil contact for faster results and improvement of those bare spots. If you have a pretty good crop of turf already growing, consider aeration as part of your regular lawn maintenance to keepthe soil healthy. Most lawns can use the accompanying broadcast spreading of grass seed to maintain a lush green turf. As your lawn continues to thrive, aerate every year or two. Aeration also improves your lawn’s ability to absorb rainfall, reducing storm water runoff.

As soil becomes compacted, it can’t breathe, beneficial microbes die off, and the roots of your grass can't absorb nutrients orwater from the soil optimally. That makes the turf weak and susceptible to weeds, disease, and limits your lawn's ability tothrive. Lawn aeration is the process of removing cores of soil from the lawn using an aerator. Plugs of soil/grass are pulledfrom the ground leaving 1/4” holes in the lawn. This encourages grass to grow deeper roots and produce a stronger, morevigorous lawn that is tougher - more able to last through the winter and/or summer droughts. Aeration is most often followed by'broadcast' spreading of grass seed over the lawn, which falls into the newly created holes. This process creates a denser turfwhich makes weed seed germination much more difficult. Aerate every year or two to provide the best environment for yourlawn to thrive.
