Dear Friends in Christ,

The gathering of the churches here in Western Nigeria was held March 31-April 2. Don, Walter Smith and Jeff Robbie each had a part along with several otherevangelists. It was necessary for us to leave on April l4th for Eastern Nigerian, near the Cameroun border, in order to attend the Conference of the Churches of Christin the Cross River State April 15-17. All of the sessions at the Easter Fellowshipand Conference were well attended and an inspiration to us.

On April 20th we returned to our home in Sango-Otta in the west because itwas necessary for Edna Anne Smith (Don's sister; to see the gynecologist at Abeokuta.V/alter took Eddie up there on the 21st. The doctor found a tumor on the cervix and saidshe must return immediately to the States. Phone calls were placed to USA and an appointment was made with Dr. Richard Zollinger in Columbus, Ohio for April 29th, The Smithsreported out at the Aliens Office in abeokuta, our state capitol. They also acquiredre-entry permits to be able to return to Nigeria.

Yesterday we learned the result of tests made at Mt. Carmel hospital. Eddiehas adeno carcinoma in the first stage. The tumor is large and inoperable, so she willreceive external radiation thereapy for 4 to 6 weeks. She will also enter the hospitalfor internal radiation treatment, "Chances of recovery are very good," Dr. Zollingersays. We ask you to pray for complete recovery for Eddie Smith. She is convinced thatthe Lord will bring her back to Nigeria. We are trusting the Lord to work His good willin her life.

Jeff and Lori Robbie will end their internship in Nigeria on May llth. Theirthree month visitors visa ran out in April and we were unable to get them the full threemonths extension. They first arrived in Nigeria on January 6, I988 with us when wereturned for our seventh term. They have been a blessing and encouragement to us. Theyare interested in linguistics and will return to the States for further study as theyprepare to be missionaries.

Our helper here at the mission, Bro. Eman Aborishade, is now out of the hospital. He is still on medication and too weak to resume work. Please keep Bro. Eman in yourprayers. His son, Soji, a recent high school graduate, was baptized last Sunday. Fivemore adults from the Sango Church of Christ were baptized also. We praise the Lord foradvancing His kingdom in this place.

Present plans are that Don and Marianne will travel to the Cross River on Way19th for a Leadership Meeting. Please pray for us as we travel. We will return home byMay 3Cth to meet Walter Smith. Walter will be in the country briefly to renew theirResidence Permits. Pray that Smiths Residence Permits will be renewed.

Thank you for loving us and supporting us so faithfully. We could not do thiswork without you. May the Lord grant you grace and peace, and souls for His kingdom.

In all the promises of Cod,

The Baughmans

Beloved Co-Workers in the Gospel,

August ^th we travelled to the Cross River State© We made it safely to theConference of the churches even though the battery of our Peugeot 50^ would only chajrgeat high speeds. Once we had to be lifted out of a watery ditch on the road through thedelta. After the three day conference of the eleven churches we drove to Calabar, thestate capital, and found out the car needed a new alternator. We were then able to runthe air-conditioner at low speeds as well as high. We headed home to Sango-Otta onAugust 18th, We had a safe and convenient journey until we were within an hour of ourhouse. The brakes failed at a round-about, ^''ortunately this road was not busy, weslowly inched our way to the very busy Abeokuta Road, Bon crept down this road veryslowly and made it home without mishap. Since that day the car has spent many days inthe garage.

All of the churches were represented at the Conference held at Ntan church inEkori. Fuel^was in short supply in the area so motorbikes and vehicles had long waitsat the petrol station. All of the messages were preached in English eind translated twice —into Loko and Legbo. These are both unwritten languages. This means that a half-hourmessage took at least one and a half hours for each one to hear in his own language©

Messages were excellent. There were talks on "The Foundation of Christian Marriage,""Your Attitude About Marriage," "The Responsibility of a Christian Wife," "Your AttitudeAbout Sex," "The Responsibility of a Christian Husband," and "The Responsibility ofChildren to Parents©"
