• Stalingrad is a major industrial city on the banks of the Volga River, and to take over this area would allow Germany to cut off the Russian army’s major supply lines.

• Stalingrad was a vital trade route between the Caspian sea and the northern part of Russia.

•Hitler wanted to expand so they went after Stalingrad.
