Hydropanel fibre cement boards from Marley Eternit have helped to avoid the issues associated with tiling andpainting a swimming pool, say Project 5 Architects. The moisture resistant properties of the board allowed claytiles, chlorine resistant paint and an intricate mosaic frieze to be applied directly to the fibre cement boards on thecompany’s latest domestic swimming pool project. The Hydropanel boards were screwed directly to timbergrounds on the walls of the new pool pavilion and will allow for any small movement. Marley Eternit supplies a fullrange of fixing screws and nails. Tiling was able to start as soon as the boards had been fixed as there was no needto seal them – as is the case with gypsum based boards. Hydropanel is available in 6mm, 9mm and 12mmthicknesses. The 900 by 1200mm one man lift board is ideal for domestic applications and new build.01283 722588www.hydropanel.co.uk

THE DARK ARTEXPLAINED
Despite modern advances such as pressure castingand robot spraying, sanitaryware manufacture isstill one of the dark arts – all the more reason whycontrols to guarantee best practice is strictlyenforced, says Gary Hawkins.
There’s a boom in ownbrands – but how do you
know you are buying goodquality, trouble free
products? Gary Hawkins,General Manager ofImpulse Bathrooms
explains how to keepcontrol.
We are seeing a boom in own brands typically, but not exclusively, manufactured in
the Far East plus the relocation of production for many famous name UK brands to
parts of the world where manufacturing costs can be reduced.
Here lies a problem, says Gary Hawkins, General Manager of Impulse Bathrooms, a China
based manufacturer of ceramic suites, baths and brassware. It is difficult to ensure consistent
quality and compliance with standards from thousands of miles away. Retaining diligent
supervision of production quality and technology is essential and technically knowledgeable
people must be on site at all times.
Vitrification, says Gary, is one area where it can all go horribly wrong. Vitrification will only
occur when the clay body is fired at a temperature of over 1200oC. With fuel costs rising rapidly,
an unscrupulous or uncontrolled supplier may be tempted to save money by turning the kiln
temperature down by a few degrees. While there may be no visible evidence of a sub standard
product after firing when exposed to water it may well absorb liquid, which will cause crazing.
This allows germs and bacteria to gain a hold and can also result in swelling and cracking – with
potentially catastrophic results.
There are other possible problems if the own brand does not own and control the
manufacturing process. Parts of the Far East have been notorious for infringing copyright with
impunity – even using one customer’s moulds to make for another. There are those here in the
UK who have purchased ranges under an exclusive agreement only to find another company
selling the same thing either under a different brand or un-named. Some countries have a
reputation for simply selling to the highest bidder – so if a big retail chain comes along with a
large order the smaller customer may be cut off from supplies.
Other things to think about when using a remote supplier are: Will quality be maintained as
per the sample? What about spares or replacements for breakages in transit? What if additional
product is needed to complete a contract for which insufficient quantities have been ordered –
can the customer stand the likely delay? Is there sufficient stockholding in this country to cover
these situations? Are you sure the company you are dealing with is the actual manufacturer? Are
their accreditations (ISO 9000 etc) valid or did they buy them for a tenner on the Internet? Do
you have to pay in full up front? What if the supplier goes out of business? Do you have the
facilities and personnel to unload containers safely and before demurrage charges come in?
These and many other questions give rise to concern for the importer. Own brands may seem a
good bet – but remember what might seem to be a good buy can turn out badly at any part of
the supply chain from manufacturer to consumer.

Correct firing of the clayware is also critical. If apeak temperature in excess of 1200°C is notachieved full vitrification to British Standard maynot occur and ware may then absorb moisture. The correct firing cycle time and control curve inconjunction with the glaze and body materials areessential to avoid finish and shape problems andachieve good yields.
Battery casting is an efficient method of volumeproduction with reasonable flexibility. In batterycasting a clay slurry is pumped into a line of plastermoulds. The moulds absorb the water from theclay slurry and a layer of clay casts up on theinternal surfaces of the mould. After around 60-75minutes the required clay thickness has built upand the remaining clay slurry is then drained offfrom the mould either by gravity or usingcompressed air depending on the type of product. The green pieces in the mould are then allowed tofirm up prior to demoulding commencing. Duringdemoulding, any holes are punched and mouldseams are tidied. The clay pieces are still veryfragile at this time and after demoulding they areallowed to harden up before further clay finishingand transport to a temperature and humiditycontrolled dryer. Over about 8-12 hours the piecesare completely dried. The dry clayware is nowabout 20% smaller than the original pieceremoved from the mould. It will shrink a further10% during firing.

There are an awful lot of ways to take a shower
from diverters and digital to eco and thermostatic
so buying from a one stop supplier who can deal
with everything can make life much easier.
Mira Showers offers the UK’s most comprehensive
selection of showering products and is backed up by the
industry’s best technical and sales support.
Buying everything from one place is always simpler, especially if you choose a supplier who can meet allyour product, technical and service needs.
Water savingMira's Eco showerhead can reduce the amount of water used by up to 75 percent (compared to astandard Logic showerhead at 0.5 bar) without compromising the shower experience. The ecoefficienttechnology uses the Venturi principle by which air is introduced into the flow without using a pump.Mixing air with the water spray creates larger droplets filled with air bubbles. The droplets explode onimpact to give a refreshing shower that uses less water and energy. The showerhead has Start, Soothe andForce modes so users can choose their favourite.
Temperature controlWith the amendments to Part G of the Building Regulations now well upon us, Mira has improved its Verve bath
shower mixer, which has now been certified to BuildCert TMV2. This ensures that it meets the amendments that setmaximum temperature limits for water delivered to baths. There are two versions – one for wall mount installations
and a second with deck mount connectors so the filler can be mounted on the bath.
Dead simpledivertingMira’s latest diverter offer is the Discovery &Diverter. Consisting of the Discovery thermostaticin wall mixer shower with new divertertechnology, the shower allows the user to switchbetween outlets. It is compatible with a range ofMira shower and bath fittings, which allows thecustomer to customise the shower room by usingthe valve with a combination of different styleand performance elements. For example, theDiscovery & Diverter valve can be combined witha prestige deluge head and hand shower or candivert between shower and bath fill using one ofa selection of matching bath spouts developed tocomplement the new product.
ThinkingdigitalMira Platinum can be programmedto allow many different functions tobe set, including shower duration, maximum and minimumtemperatures and flow rates as wellas warm up mode and eco mode. There is even a clock display. Thenew control valve uses RFcommunication between theinterface and the valve. This makesinstallation simpler, provides thefreedom to locate the interfacealmost anywhere and permits theuse of additional interfaces that canbe mounted outside the enclosureso the shower can be set to therequired temperature before theuser steps under the water.

To complete the look, Matki has a variety of bath, basin and bidet fillers. Although these were designed specifically for theBlade range, there is now a wide choice of style. The EXD20/185 basin filler shown here is minimalist in style with handlesthat mirror the design of the Blade shower mixer.
New Blade brasswareMatki has also introduced the new Blade shower
control and tap range. This range has user friendly leverhandles and clear markings for temperature and flow
rate. The Matki Click Control temperature regulatormakes the shower control simple and safe to use for the
whole family. The Blade Duo hand shower has beendesigned with the environment in mind as a simple
turn of the hand shower rose reduces the flow rate to11 litres per minute, delivering a satisfying shower
while saving on water and energy. A 220mm easy cleanDeluge showerhead is the perfect addition to the Blade
design and works well combined with the ultra slimslide rail. This gives the user the choice of an overhead
or soft spray hand shower with eco setting.
The Elixir Classic concealed
thermostatic shower mixer is a popular
choice thanks to its timeless clean
design and easy to operate controls. It
is shown here with the EX009 wall
mounted shower combination. The all
brass body has been designed to fit into
a space of just 48mm, making it
suitable for modern, shallow walls.
Manufactured in the UK by Swadling
Brassware, a Matki company, the Elixir
mixer has been designed to suit all UK
plumbing systems and will deliver an
efficient shower at 0.1 bar with safe
temperature control up to 5 bar. To
answer the need for energy and water
conservation, all Matki and Swadling
hand showers and overhead deluge
showerheads are fitted with a free
optional flow reducer, which limits the
flow to a water saving 11 litres per
minute. These products are just part of
a wide range of showering products
manufactured by Matki varying from
luxury enclosures made using 10mm

Bigger and busier than ever, ISH amply demonstrated that
Germany is back on top of its game, ruling Europe in the
bathroom and beyond. Polls conducted by Messe Frankfurt said
that German exhibitors and visitors were satisfied with the current
economic situation, According to the organisers, around 204,000
people attended the show. Certainly there were times when you stood
a good chance of being trampled underfoot going into hall 3.1 where
most of the big name sanitaryware manufacturers had their stands.
With 2,355 exhibitors in total (not all of them bathrooms as the show
is also for heating, air conditioning, pools etc), there was a lot to see.
Green issues – or Blue Responsibility as the Germans were calling
it – was a big thing – so much so that the famous foot ache saving
ISH travo-lators between the halls were switched off – presumably to
save energy.
The economic position of the bathroom industry in Germany is
certainly a contrast to the way things are here in the UK – as Andreas
Dornbracht, Chairman of the Association of the German Sanitation
Industry explains. “From the point of view of the German sanitation
industry, ISH 2011 reflected the positive economic climate prevailing
in the sector. Business is booming. The exhibition halls were full,
especially on the Thursday, which is traditionally the busiest day of all.
Against the background of a stable number of visitors from Germany,
we are particularly pleased about the significant increase in the
number of international visitors. All those visitors who did not come to
ISH 2009 because of the financial and business crisis were back this
year. We were especially struck by the remarkable proportion of
foreign visitors from markets that are set to become expanding export
markets for the German sanitation industry. Additionally, we once
again set new accents in an emotional form of communication with
our ‘Pop-up-my-Bathroom’ trend forum, which was given a very
warm reception by bathroom builders. In other words, the ISH
represents an excellent start to the bathroom business for 2011.”
After Germany the top visitor nations were Italy, France,
Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and the UK.
In a clear sign that recession is over in Germany, Villeroy & Boch
went for decoration both on its fabulous new My Nature luxury
collection with the option of a subtle self pattern of leaves on the
basin and on O.novo Style, a young, fun and funky collection. My
Nature takes V&B back to that lovely natural, clean look last seen with
New Haven and should be just as successful.
For sheer, cool, laid back style the Armani/ Roca collaboration
takes the prize. It is quite simply beautiful just like the great man’s
clothes and should effectively move the perception of Roca up a notch
in the market. Just as in the kitchen sector, furniture colours were
subtle. The burgundy we saw everywhere last ISH has vanished
without trace, replaced by natural taupe, grey and white gloss.
Grohe says that Ondus Veris is rootedin the philosophy of sensual
minimalism. This sleek, slimline designis available in white, black and chrome
finishes and, according to Grohe, blends sobriety with emotion. Theline’s innovative design is perfectly
suited to the clean, restrained look ofcosmopolitan style bathrooms. It
includes a choice of single-lever faucetsfor the basin and bath, all featuring
Grohe SilkMove for smooth andprecise handling. Wall-mounted fillers
designed to complement largecounter-mounted basins are available

Armani/Roca is a complete –and totally fabulous concept
that includes wall and floorcoverings, lighting,
sanitaryware, furniture, bathsand accessories. The elements
of the bathroom are dividedinto wellness, beauty, showerand basic needs areas. It was
quite stunning and should be ahuge success for Roca.

Also new from Roca at ISH was the In-Flow bath created by the Roca Innovation Lab thatcombines sustainability, design, technology and well being. The ergonomic base adapts tothe shape of the user and the bath has a comprehensive hydro massage system. It takes lesswater than a conventional bath of similar dimensions because of its shape.01530 830080www.roca.com
Warren Ginsberg of HiB is a man who makes the most of exhibitions – and ISH was noexception. “I have only been here a few hours and already I have spoken to potentialcustomers from ten different countries,” he commented. The 112 sq.m stand showed a widerange of mirrors and mirror cabinets including the all new rechargeable LED mirror. Demosfrom HiB staff attracted a lot of attention and translators were available where needed. Therewere several new designs specifically for the European market where larger mirrors arepreferred. Major interest centred on the new range of illuminated aluminium cabinets. “Thiswas an entirely new experience for us,” said Warren. “We eventually came face to face withcustomers from 57 countries and were overwhelmed by the level of interest in the productsand appreciation of the design and quality.” 020 8441 0352www.hib.co.uk
Rounded corners and aluminium trim were a distinct theme. Also gone
is the gold brassware seen last ISH. Chrome rules again – although
Hansgrohe’s Ian McKinley reports great success for chrome and white.
Just about everybody who was anybody showed some sort of iphone
style app. Interactive controls were big too – Jado’s sleek shower was
just like a big ipod with water.
Most of the exhibitors were mainland European though it was
nice to see some home faces in the shape of Phil, Mike and Ellie from
Pegler on their Dutch parent company’s stand (rather curiously
designed as a series of airline cabins complete with jet take off noises
and female cabin crew in eye poppingly short outfits). Other familiar
names and faces included Methven, Vado and a few representatives
from Hull on Ideal Standard. A big well done to Ideal Standard for
some really nice, sellable furniture (see picture) and for an excellent
selection of showers and shower kits. Also on show were some of the
items launched in the UK a couple of months ago and the very clever
Ceramix Blue water and energy saving brassware range.
We really, really loved Duravit – a fabulous effort as always with
Esplanade by Sergio Tchoban as the showpiece (read more about it on
page 29). The designer says he was inspired by the elegance of the
great boulevards of Paris and though not strictly period in style,
Esplanade does have an appealing turn of the century gracious living
look that adds a lot to Duravit’s portfolio.
With its square-edged look and high-fashion feel, Ideal Standard Strada is an attractivemodern bathroom collection. This complete range of slick ceramics and stylish furniturebrings a contemporary edge to the entire bathroom. Furniture and ceramics work inharmony, giving a high-fashion feel with a directional but classic look that won’t date. Awide range of sizes and installation options are available. The collection is available in stylishwhite or dark grey finishes and features smooth, sophisticated handles. 01482 346461www.ideal-standard.co.uk

The Kermi heating programme was boosted by the addition of extended colour

area. Four major colour groupings – Soft, Nature, Ethno and Retro – provide a vast
range of choice for colour afficionados, covering soft pastels, natural tones, earthy,
vivid ethnic statements and retro metallics. Shown here are a few of the colour

Dansani always has a really attractive stand for ISH. This year one of the highlights wasthe Cadenza washbasin, which is compatible with Luna and Zaro furniture ranges. The
basin is made from solid marble and is available with taps positioned on the right orleft. The asymmetrical shape is a good contrast to the angular, linear look of Zaro and

VitrA’s skill at designing truly complete
collections that cover all the bases was
emphasised at ISH with the inspiring new
T4, additions to S-Line and the
comprehensive and affordably priced S20.
There was some inspiring new brassware
too, all displayed on a clean, spacious open
stand that showed products to good
advantage.
Total Inspiration with T4Sanitaryware, furniture, baths and brassware - T4 created for VitrA by the Noa Design Group
really does have it all. The key theme is restrained, classic elegance with rounded corners and
subtle furniture finishes that create a comfortable, relaxing look.
Basin units are trimmed with smart aluminium profile bands and have generous storage
space. Basins and furniture come in a good selection of sizes and can be used with wall or
counter top mounted mixers. The bath is big enough for two to bathe in comfort. In line with
VitrA’s aim to be all things to all bathrooms, T4 includes a guest collection with a 50 by 30cm
basin and smaller size mixer. VitrA’s furniture offer has improved immensely since the company
made acquisitions, so T4 furniture is both well designed and beautifully made. As well as the
basin units, the furniture collection also includes tall units, all with soft close. Mirror cabinets are
available in six sizes from 60 to 130cm and feature a halogen downlight on the underside to
illuminate the basin area.

Vado took the opportunity to preview the
advanced Touch Multi-Media Shower
(MMS) at ISH – and attracted a lot of attention
from visitors fascinated by the technology.
Vado’s Touch MMS is the shower with everything.
Features include a stunning overhead flat panel
showerhead with chromotherapy lighting, waterfall
and intense rain options, six body jets that can be
operated as one unit or in pairs, a wall mounted
hand shower and a bath filler/foot spout.
Everything is operated by a digital, fully waterproof
touch control unit, which features internal MP4
video and MP3 music storage with a separate USB
and Aux-In input box. Music is played through four
showerproof speakers and video is played on the
digital control unit's screen. The digital control unit
has clear symbols for the different functions and has
a dial that instantly controls water temperature so
that users do not have to scroll through the various
screens to make adjustments. The digital control
unit is available in black or white.
Vado’s Sales Director Jim Williams was
delighted with visitor response at the show. “Our
constantly busy stand coupled with numerous
enquiries bore testament to the industry leading
products we displayed at ISH. Following our best
ever trading year in 2010, the response by visitors
to our stand indicates that we are continuing to
provide precisely what customers demand in terms

In touch with tapsA selection of Vado’s Identity digital touch sensitive taps
were also on show at ISH. Identity’s touch sensitive controls
change from blue through purple to red, depending on the
water temperature – a very useful visual safety feature,
especially on thermostatic shower valves. Available in
square, scroll and open channel waterfall spout styles, there
is an Identity mixer to suit most contemporary bathroom
settings – one of the reasons why this range has been such
a hit with customers.
While the main focus at ISH was on digital taps and
showers, a selection of non digital brassware was also on
display including shower valves, wall and deck mounted
basin mixers and bathroom accessories from ranges such as
Life, Soho and Synergie giving visitors the chance to
experience the style and quality on offer first hand.
VADO AROUND THE WORLDVisitors to the stand could also view a presentation featuring some of Vado’s

villeroy & bochISH is V&B’s show and as always the stand was packed with new ideas.
My Nature marked V&B back to its very best - a collection reminiscent of
the iconic and very successful New Haven range launched some years
ago. Other highlights included a new look for the Memento collection,
Futurion Flat shower trays, stunning use of colour on La Belle baths and
the birth of the 360 project for architects and planners that divides
products into four distinct groups to suit different projects. Orange is the
entry level and to mark this ISH saw the launch of the O.novo ceramic
and bath collection, O.novo Style featuring decorated sanitaryware and
the Frame to Frame furniture and shower enclosure range.

Natural BeautyThe central element of My Nature is asweeping wash stand in chestnut which isavailable in various forms. The basin is ashapely shallow oval either in white or innew Castanea décor which is a soft leafpattern, deep textured but with filigreeelements. The furnishings are solid and atthe same time airy in design and practicaldown to the tiniest detail. The wash standvanity unit has a space-saving built-in towelholder and the console drawer has aremovable tray.
The eye-catcher in the collection is thegenerously proportioned bathtub (picturedleft). It is available in three variations andrests on a plinth which can be chestnut orwhite matt. Alternatively, it can be fittedwith a smaller wooden platform, alsoavailable in white matt.
The L’Aura brassware collection isdesigned to complement My Nature.
The contemporary, linear Memento range has a brand new look for 2011. Shown here (right)is the Memento basin with Shape furniture. Memento now includes Bright Oak, the new,
exclusive furniture finish – a genuine oak veneer with a textured grain to create exciting tactileand visual contrasts to ceramic and glass elements. Also new is matt ceramic in Edelweiss and
the Squaro Superflat shower tray, also in fine white or Edelweiss. The Memento guestbathroom extends the range to smaller areas with vanities and side cupboards that make the
most of limited space and offer valuable storage.
Making a splash with colourColour was in short supply at ISH, but V&B opted for some bright
splashes on its La Belle bath which featured an apron in either
Raspberry Red Framboise or Graphite Noire (shown left). The Loop
basin also appeared in rich Cassis, a juicy blackberry shade. Elegant
earth tones are a fashionable choice in interior design. Villeroy & Boch
interpreted this trend with Terra matt on the Sentique and Shape
furniture collections.
Fun, young at heart O.novo Style is partof the new entry level O.novo rangethat gives buyers a chance to create areally individual statement. “Wedeveloped O.novo Style for people whowant to bring more design, more colourand more joie de vivre to their everydaylives,” explains Vessela Carrillo, productmanager for O.novo Style. An oval basinand a double door vanity are the centralpieces in O.novo Style. Thecontemporary décor and colour variantsprovide the individuality: there are threefloral-abstract décors to choose from forthe basins - Playground, PrettySilhouette and Cherry Blossom – allavailable in the colour schemes of blue, orange and violet. The Desire range is a collection ofenclosures that turns the conceptthat 'the sliding mechanism on anenclosure with a sliding door mustbe at the top of the enclosure' onits head by incorporating it into thebase of the enclosure, for theultimate in minimalist styling. Thisunique concept is an internationallypatented design. The rangeincludes the Desire Sliding Doorand the Desire Quadrants, availablein three different styling options.
New to the Embrace range is the Folding Bath Screen (above)which is approved for use with power showers and neatly foldsaway when not in use. Everybody’s DarlingThe Darling bathroom range, created by
Duravit in collaboration with designerDieter Sieger, was unveiled in 1994.
Duravit has now returned its attention tothis affordable range together with Dieter
Sieger's sons, Michael and ChristianSieger, developing it into Darling New.
From the large choice of basins andfurniture washbasin through to the Senso-
Wash shower shower-toilet seat the newprogramme upholds the original idea of
"plenty of design for little money".
Duravit always has a showpiece collection
for ISH. This year star billing went to
Esplanade designed by Sergei Tschoban - but
that wasn’t all. Darling has been a hit since
launch in the 1990s. Darling New is a rework
that is as good as the original. Philippe Starck
has been busy too with new furniture, basins
and iconic sanitaryware and the St. Trop steam
shower. Nahho from EOOS is a flotation bath,
complete with underwater music and there
were also three geometric Paiova Monolith
baths. Onto is a new basin and bath collection
from Matteo Thun where the basin and console
are one smooth, seamless piece. The range also
includes furniture and baths that include a deep
Japanese style immersion tub.

duravitThe NewNostalgia
Best described as tasteful opulence,Esplanade by Sergio Tchoban is aclever combination of grand 19th
century design and unclutteredmodern styling. The historical
reference is clear to see in the bathwhich has a raised shoulder area,
rather like a chaise longue and in thebasins where the tap platform is
rather higher than the front, giving ashapely line at the sides. The furniture
is available in oak (dark) and silk(white) and has leather loop handles.
The base vanity unit which PhilippeStarck designed for his Starck 1bathroom range back in 1994 isone of the best-known items ofbathroom furniture. Starck has nowintroduced geometric variations tothis conical form. The "barrel" as it isaffectionately known, is now alsoavailable as a cylinder and a cuboid. At the same time, the designer hascreated new rectangular lowcabinets which also take up thegeometric variations with a varietyof console washbasins ranging fromcircular to tri-oval, plus new mirrorsand mirror cabinets.
The Nahho flotation bath from EOOS is the ultimate inbathroom indulgence with options that include lighting, aspa system and music. The sound module uses Bluetooth toestablish a connection with an MP3 player or mobile phoneand the bathtub itself serves as a sounding body. The soundis transmitted via structure-borne sound converters and canbe enjoyed above and under water. Technical elements suchas tap fitting or spotlights are concealed behind a furnitureflap in white or matt graphite finish.
Designed by Philippe Starck, the St. Trop steam showertakes up no more than one square metre of floor space.Features include Starck tap fittings with a luxury overheadshower and a control panel that activates a powerful steambath for maximum relaxation. At the touch of a button, thetemperature climbs to between 42 and 50oC at a humidityof 100 percent for a set 20 minutes. The frame of thecubicle, designed by Starck to emulate a picture frame, isavailable in all Duravit furniture colours.

Based in the Dartmoor area just a few miles from
the raw materials needed for manufacturing,
British Ceramic Tile produces wall and floor tiles
under several different brands including British
Ceramic Tile, Laura Ashley, Wet by Hemingway
Design and Studio Conran. The company is proud
of its association with the Dartmoor area where
the proximity of the raw materials mean that
fewer miles are covered, keeping prices down and
reducing the impact on the environment.
The various tile ranges are sold through
independent retailers and a network of distributors
as well as being specified through national
contracts and by housebuilders. The distribution
network gives a good geographical spread across
the country and allows the company to keep in
touch with the needs of its customers across
different market sectors. Own brand designs are
produced exclusively for a number of DIY
multiples including Homebase, Focus, Wickes, Tile
Giant and Topps Tiles. The in-house design team
works hard to ensure that all ranges offer choice,
flexibility and the ability to co-ordinate with
kitchen and bathroom products.
In 2010 British Ceramic Tile began exporting

You will probably associate the RAK name with bathroomfittings but the company is also one of the world’s largestmanufacturers of ceramic and porcelain tiles, usinginnovative technology to produce stunning, on trendranges at competitive prices.
Based in Ras al Khaimah, Rak has advanced capabilities that allow it to respond
competitively with new products that meet market trends and demand. Examples of this
are Nanoprint and Digital print processes that use high density printing technology to
create marble and natural stone finishes on porcelain. The technique achieves a natural variance
of shade and surface texture that is barely discernible from the real thing. Large formats of up to
100 by 30cm allow a natural stone surface to be almost uninterrupted by joints, giving a
professional finish at an affordable price.
Porcelain as a material is undergoing a huge expansion. It has unrivalled durability and can
be made in very large formats and in a range of finishes. RAK manufactures the largest slabs in
the industry at 180 by 120cm.
New porcelain products from RAK include Dolomite in 50 by 20cm and 60 by 30cm sizes,
The surface has a unique clouded finish and the tiles are rectified to give thinner grout lines for
continuity of surface. In kitchens, the Rainbow and Lotus ranges are back in vogue with the
resurgence of interest in 10 by 10cm format tiles.

Surfaces from Granite Transformations areusually used in kitchens but played astarring role in bathrooms featured in thetv property series, Beeny’s RestorationNightmare. The material was used forcladding walls and bath surrounds in thebathroom for the bridal suite, in twoshower rooms and the dramatic DreamGreen bathroom. It was also used for300mm square floor tiles in all fivecompleted rooms.
The opportunity to be on tv arose when Sarah Beeny and her husband Graham Swift realised that material fromGranite Transformations was perfect for cladding bathroom walls. Danny Hanlon, Chief Operating Officer at GraniteTransformations was delighted to become involved in the project, eventually supplying around 115 square metres ofagglomerate slabs and 30 square metres of floor tiles plus materials and installation by qualified fitters. Sarah wasdelighted by the end result and is already talking to Danny Hanlon about upgrading six more bathrooms with aplan to reface existing splashbacks and tiles.0800 822 3410www.granitetransformations.co.uk
