Principal’s Message
Sporting Blues
Much to their embarrassment, I have never hesitated to
mention the sporting success of two of our departing
Year 12 students. Usually their achievements speak for
themselves, but both have just been awarded accolades
which deserve attention and explanation.
The award of a sporting “blue” has its origins in the
fierce yet friendly rivalry between Oxford and
Cambridge universities. For the last 200 years or so,
these famous institutions have competed in the annual
boat race on the Thames River. The rowers from Oxford
are traditionally identified by dark blue colours, whilst
those from Cambridge are adorned with light blue.
From this, the term “blue” was adopted to recognise
sportspeople who had performed at the highest level
and this spread to other universities around the world.
This tradition continues in the NSW Combined High
Schools Sports Association. Only a handful of students
across the state are awarded sporting blues each year.
Recipients must demonstrate a commitment to school
as well as sport, and uphold ideals of respect and fair
play.
Kateia Barenaba travelled to Sydney last Friday to
receive her NSW blue for volleyball. She is the first
Batemans Bay High School student to receive this
honour since 1989. This places her in esteemed
company among many now famous international
athletes.
Nathan Meacham is another outstanding sportsperson
and one who might consider himself unlucky not to
receive a NSW blue. However, Nathan has earned a
South Coast (regional) blue for swimming, a rare and
outstanding achievement in its own right. He will be
presented with his award this Tuesday in Wollongong.
As proud as I am of Kateia and Nathan’s sporting
prowess, I am even more impressed by the example they
have set for others. They are humble and unassuming
young people, both with great attitudes to learning.
They prove that academic ability and sporting ability are
not mutually exclusive.
Interact Does It Again
Our very own Interact club continues to put service
above self in assisting the local community. Each year,
the club decides on a project that will contribute in
some unique, meaningful and practical way. The goal for
2017 was to purchase a beach wheelchair for the
Batemans Bay Surf Life Saving Club. This would enable
people with disabilities to make the most of a trip to the
beach, something many of us take for granted in the
summer months. I am pleased to report that the goal
was achieved ahead of schedule, with representatives
from the surf living saving club receiving the chair at the
last school assembly.
The Interact Club would like to thank Maureen
Manning and Alan Russell from the Rotary Club of
Batemans Bay for their unwavering support. Without
their impetus and advice, projects such as this might
never come to fruition.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) aims to
encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in
students, and to enable them to experience quality
literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each
student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.
The PRC is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to
Year 9 in government, independent, Catholic and home
schools. Of the Batemans Bay High Schools entrants this
year, Chloe Morton in Year 9 was the top student,
earning a PRC medal for her efforts. Tara Doran and
Shanae Alvey in Year 7 were also amongst the top
readers.

Victor Chang Award
The 2017 recipient of the Victor Chang Science Award is
Joshua Paranethoiene. The award aims to nurture
future Australian scientific research and encourage top
science students to pursue careers in the field.
Dr Joshua Ho from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research
Institute presented Joshua’s award at Figtree High
School a few weeks ago. Dr Ho congratulated him on
his performance in Physics and Chemistry, which Joshua
hopes will translate into a strong ATAR when he
completes his HSC.
Concert Band
Music teacher Mrs Kathie Harris has been devoting
considerable effort over the past 12 months to
establishing a concert band across the Batemans Bay
Community of Schools. This is a genuine partnership
with Sunshine Bay and Batemans Bay Public Schools,
sharing our expertise to provide students with a
specialised music education. It will offer a pathway into
high school and, judging by the band’s popularity, is
fulfilling a previously undisclosed need.
The band performed on Friday after a day of rehearsal
at our school. The band members were eager to show
what they had learned on their clarinets, saxophones,
flutes, trumpets and trombones. Mrs Harris must be
feeling a real sense of satisfaction with their progress
and I can’t wait to hear these students perform when
they reach high school.
End of Year Presentations
Please set aside two dates in the last three weeks of the
year. Our Student Achievement Program recognition
assembly is on at 9am on Thursday 30 November.
Around 240 students will be acknowledged, our highest
number since the program’s inception. Parents should
have received information about any awards their
children will be receiving. Our annual Presentation Day
will be held on Tuesday 12 December, again at 9am,
where our top performers in 2018 will be acknowledged.
Swimming Carnival
The school has decided to move our swimming carnival
to the end of the year. More details on the December 11
carnival are included later in this newsletter. This is a
significant change and the intention is to address some
of the issues we face with a February carnival. The new
timing minimises disruption at the start of new school
year. It also allows the chance for rescheduling in the
event of rain. Year 6 students have been invited to
participate and new enrolments can still submit their
times to be eligible for the zone carnival.

From the Deputies
Three weeks now till the end of school and we must say,
this year seems to have gone so quickly. Exams and
assessments should be finishing up soon and reports
will be written and handed out during the last week of
school.
We have discussed many and varied topics this year
from assessment, exam skills, wellbeing, positive
reinforcement, policies and procedures and new
initiatives. With all this we are aiming to continue to
build a lasting and meaningful partnership with you as
parents so that together we can work to get the very
best outcomes for your children and our students. We
are always reminded of the quote “It takes a village to
raise a child” and we believe that sharing our thoughts
and ideas on education helps to create an increased
understanding between us.
Learning
With that in mind we recently became aware of the
government initiative titled Active Kids which was
released in November this year and aims to change the
physical activity behaviours of children and young
people in NSW with an incentive for families in the form
of a rebate. We hope that all of you will take advantage
of this is a terrific Initiative.
Ministerial media release: Active Kids Rebate
Download Active Kids Recipient Guidelines
As Deputies we often lament how many of our students
tell us “I used to do sport or an activity when I was
younger but I don’t now that I am in high school”. We
see the continuation of physical activity as vital to the
child’s development and how it can have a significant
impact on so many areas of their life and especially their
learning. With this new Government Initiative we hope
we will see many of our students taking advantage of
the wonderful opportunities that exist in our local area
to be involved in physical activity.
Exercise and its importance to student learning:
Exercise and the Brain
In a study done by Georgia Health Sciences University,
researchers had 11 to 17 year olds who were overweight
commit to 20 to 40 minutes of vigorous play every day
such as jump rope, running games, and hula hooping.
The activity was done every day after school for three
months and the results of their MRI scans at the end of
the test period showed an enhancement in brain activity.
All of the students showed remarkable improvements in
their math skills but the students that exercised the most
also showed an impressive 3.8-point increase on standard
I.Q. tests. However, improving test scores is not the only
positive effect physical activity has on learning in the
classroom.
Exercise in the Classroom
Recently a teacher in Canada decided to test what effect
exercise had on her students and found some amazing
results. The teacher added two weekly bouts of exercise
that were 20 minutes each and conducted them while still
teaching her regular subjects like language, arts and
mathematics. At the end of the four-week trial, the
teacher found that every single student went up a full
letter grade in reading and math; some of her kids even
went from F’s in vocabulary to A’s. This was similar to the
findings of the study done by Georgia Health Sciences
University.
This four week test on the effects of physical activity on
learning not only found an increase in test scores, but also
found that the kids had an improved ability to
concentrate and could work for longer periods of time
without interruption. Additional benefits included
significantly improved student attendance, and an
impressive 67% drop in disciplinary problems.

Shakespeare Performance
On Tuesday 24 October students were treated to a
performance of Romeo and Juliet. The four young actors
transformed into many different characters, using props
and costumes, to perform an abridged version of the
play. Complete with sword fights, humour, romance and
tragedy the play was a fantastic experience. One of the
highlights of the afternoon was the question and answer
session conducted after the performance. Our students
asked clever, thoughtful and interesting questions and
the actors commented that this was the best Q&A they
had ever held! Considering the actors have been
performing at schools across NSW and QLD for over a
month, this was a real compliment and a testimony to
our excellent students here at Batemans Bay High
School.
Students behaved in an exemplary manner during the
show and were an excellent representation of our
school. As well as this, many students commented that
they very much enjoyed the show and found they
understood more of Shakespeare through the
performance.
Please enjoy some photographs from the performance
and look out for more opportunities to see live shows at
BBHS.

Eurobodalla Schools Chess Day
Our Junior Chess Team entered the annual Eurobodalla
Schools Chess Day at Bodalla Public School on Friday 10
November. The students were keen to participate and
played several timed games. Our team was placed
second and all students received a certificate of
participation. Students have been developing skills in
their weekly lunchtime chess games with Miss Peters
and Mr Carter and are encouraged to keep playing
chess weekly. They have all been playing to their best
and looked forward to playing in the annual chess

Peer Support Leader Training
On Tuesday 21 November 2017, eighty students
travelled to Hanging Rock to attend peer support leader
training. Throughout the day the students participated
in various activities including practical games and
lessons on how to be a good leader. After a provided
barbeque cooked by students, groups had to design
and create a costume made out of newspaper, scissors,
string and tape. During this activity students were
required to communicate and cooperate as a team. This
was many students’ favourite part of the day. Year 9
took many great ideas and skills away from this day
which can be used next year when we will welcome the
Year 7 students through peer support. Thank you to the
teachers for organising and making this day possible.
Also thankyou to the year 10 students who volunteered
their day to help out.
Kelarney Blunden and Josie Baff
Year 9 students
Likewise, I would like to thank the staff and students for
making this a very successful day. Many students
demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and
some students may have even surprised themselves. As
a school we find that the peer support program provides
students with an opportunity to give back and excel
outside the classroom and within the schooling
community. It was very pleasing to hear that students
enjoyed the day as much as they did. I would personally
like to thank students for their exceptional behaviour
and positive attitudes as it created an enhanced learning
environment where everyone was made to feel
welcome.

7ENT Magazine Covers
Students in 7ENT have been working hard this term to
create magazine covers using Microsoft PowerPoint.
Students were asked to select a theme that appealed to
them for their magazine, decide on a name, find a cover
image and then create cover stories that would entice
their audience to buy their magazine. The class then
learnt how to use many of the tools in PowerPoint to
create their covers. I think you will agree many of
these samples look like professional magazines and
Ms Koprivec and Miss Coursey are very proud of what
these students have achieved in a short time frame. We
look forward to being able to publish more of their work
in the future.

Careers
Volunteering
Volunteering is the single most overlooked skill on
resumes. If you knew that as many as 86% of influencers
believe that volunteering would make you more
competitive among a pool of job seekers, wouldn’t you
make sure to put that activity front and centre on your
resume?
If you are a student and are told that most scholarships
are given to people who volunteer wouldn’t you go out
and volunteer.
If you are a student applying for entry to a university
medical course and you’re told that doing volunteer
work in a hospital or aged care facility increases the
chances of entry, wouldn’t you volunteer?
In the recruitment world of jobs and job seekers,
recruiters are overwhelmingly in favour of volunteering
as a professional development tool. Among the
findings:
92% believe volunteering expands an
employee’s professional skill set
85% are willing to overlook resume pitfalls
when an employee includes volunteering on a
resume.
82% are more likely to choose a candidate with
volunteering experience
80% believe volunteering is an effective way to
boost leadership skills
73% believe people who volunteer are more
successful
On this last point a European study found young
people's involvement in volunteer initiatives stimulates
the development of creative thinking and the ability to
quickly adjust in new situations, it forms tolerance for
others' values, social sensitivity and an active civil stance
- skills which can be capitalized on when both searching
for a job and starting a business.
These skills make young volunteers much more
successful on the labour market, compared to their
peers, who lack volunteering experience.
One of the important conclusions from the study
analysis is that there is a correlation between the skills
young people acquire while volunteering and the skills
employers look for. For students having volunteer
experience on their resume is extremely beneficial and
an advantage over those who don’t.
People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For
some it offers the chance to give something back to the
community or make a difference to the people around
them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop
new skills or build on existing experience and
knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites
them all is that they find it both challenging and
rewarding.
