Mark Waite Deputy Principal WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN A huge thank you to everyone who is collecting Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers and sending them into our school or putting them into the box at Woolworths at Charter Hall, Bateau Bay. The school has already received over 22,000 stickers. Our goal is 30,000 stickers but we would love to collect more before the promotion finishes on 26th June 2019. TIME TO CHECK CLOTHING IS LABELLED As the cooler weather is now upon us, we ask that you check that all jumpers, hats and jackets are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. It is so much easier to ensure those misplaced items are returned to their owner if they are clearly marked. Please check our lost property located just inside the COLA door if your child is missing any items.

GIRLS SOCCER

On Thursday 30 May, the PSSA girl’s soccer team played two outstanding games at Killarney Vale Athletics Field. The girls showed great sportsmanship and played with enthusiasm. In the first game Bateau Bay won 5-1. We then went on to play Brooke Avenue in the final game with another win of 3-1. All of the girls worked as a team and played exceptionally well. I am proud to say we have made it to round 4 which will be against Berkeley Vale. Thank you to all of the parents/ grandparents that came to watch on the day, we really appreciated your support. Congratulations and great effort. Vanessa Yeo Soccer Coach

DEBATING

On Friday 24 May Bateau Bay Debating Team 2019 attended an away debate at Killarney Vale Public School. The topic selected by the home team from the coin toss was: That bullies should be named and shamed at school assemblies. Bateau Bay's team debated in the negative and set out to prove that bullies should not be named and shamed. The Speakers for the day in order were Kyah L, Olivia H, Angus K and Evie G. They were ably encouraged and supported by Cooper D. Killarney Vale began strongly and provided many points for our team to rebut however Bateau Bay Public School were the winners of the debate with their strong persuasive manner and thoughtful rebuttals. Last Thursday 30 May, in a debate against Erina Heights Public School Tawny Frogmouths, our debaters were triumphant. The Bateau Bay Public School team were in the negative to win, with the topic being "that primary schools should spend one afternoon a week teaching internet skills ". The speakers were Kyah L, Olivia H, Angus K and Cooper D. Congratulations to the team on their hard work and dedication to improving their debating skills. The next debate will be in Term 3.

PSSA NETBALL TEAM Congratulations to our PSSA netball team! On Tuesday 28 May, Bateau Bay Public School attended a netball gala day at Baker Park Wyong. The girls participated in 4 remarkable games against schools from around the Central Coast. It was an honour to see such great sportsmanship, enjoyment and determination from every team member. The girls represented Bateau Bay with pride, played with incredible skill and most importantly had smiles on their faces the entire day. Bateau Bay won 3 out of the 4 games played. What an amazing effort, well done girls! Nikita Carothers Netball Coach

PRIMARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Friday 31 May 2019, the school held its annual primary athletics carnival at Mingara athletics track. It was a crisp autumn day and the students enjoyed a fantastic day filled with running, field events and novelties. Students who come 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the 100m finals or 1st and 2nd in all other events progress to the Tuggerah Lakes zone athletics carnival to be held on Friday 23 August 2019. Permission notes will be issued to qualifying students closer to the event. Congratulations to all students who reached zone athletics level, what a fantastic achievement! Adele Strange Athletics Coordinator

OPERATION ART For the past few years our school has participated in a program called Operation Art. This art program is open to all government and non-government schools across the state from Kindergarten to Year 10. All entries are exhibited at the Armory Gallery at Homebush and 150 pieces are selected for further exhibition with fifty being eventually hung in Westmead Children’s Hospital. There are however a range of different awards. Each entry that is submitted is framed and returned to the school unless they are selected to be exhibited elsewhere. Due to the costs of framing there is an entry fee of $95 to participate. For this reason the school is only able to select one piece as our official entry. The winning entry this year was by Paxton M in 2J for his mixed media piece called “The Planet Groll”. Paxton was selected from sixteen entries. My thanks to all the students who participated in the competition this year, selecting one entry amongst so many fine artworks is always a difficult process.

PARENT AND CARER

INFORMATION SEL Social & Emotional Learning

Lesson 1

Objectives:

Students become familiar with the concept of the ‘Zones’ (see page 2), increase vocabulary of emotions and further develop skills in recognition of facial expressions.

Lesson 1: Introducing ‘The Zones of Regulation’ and Recognising Emotions

LESSON 1 OVERVIEW: This lesson introduces students

to the four ‘Zones of Regulation’ © (Social Thinking, 2011)

used to categorise the different emotions and states of

alertness people experience. Using images of various

feelings, students learn to identify the four ‘Zones’, which

are the foundation of ‘The Zones of Regulation’. Students

work on increasing their vocabulary of emotions and

recognition of facial expressions.

The ‘Zones of Regulation’ © is a systematic visual way to

classify different emotions, feelings and behaviours into 4

colour-coded areas – we call Zones. It’s a simple concrete tool

that is easy to refer to and understand. The Zones support

students to identify with their feelings, understand their level of

alertness, and use skills to problem-solve solutions and self-

regulate. A significant component of the Zones teaches

students not only to recognise these emotions but supports

them in developing effective regulation tools – leading to

independent regulation. We typically feel our best, and we’re

able to learn our best, when we’re in the ‘Green Zone’. It’s the

optimal zone for learning and engagement. When we’re in the

‘Yellow Zone’ we’re starting to lose control of our

emotions and behaviour, before tipping into the ‘Red Zone’. Importantly, we all experience being in each Zone at different times related to expected or unexpected situations. Key points will be to consider the strategies we use in each Zone to help regulate our behaviour and response to situations. HOW CAN YOU HELP ? Use the language and talk about the Zones as

they apply to you in a variety of environments

Make comments aloud so your child understands it’s natural that we all experience the different Zones

Help your child gain awareness of his or her

Zone and feelings by pointing out your observations ie, “I can see you are frustrated, you are in the yellow zone”

Encourage your child to share his or her Zone

with you and help them to become comfortable using the language to communicate his or her feelings and needs

Model how you feel - what Zone you would be

in and what you will do to self-regulate

You might like to keep a copy of the Zones (p.2) on the fridge or somewhere at home which is handy to refer to as a ‘check in’ system

BBPS

To support the ‘Wellbeing Framework for Schools’ and the Australian Curriculum’s (ACARA) Personal and Social Capability Learning Continuum, all students across the school will participate in a series of ‘Social and Emotional Learning’ (SEL) lessons, taught in classrooms, designed to help students recognise emotions, address self-regulation, increase vocabulary of emotional terms, develop skills in reading expressions, and insights into events that trigger behaviours. Additionally, students will learn calming and alert strategies whilst they also develop social thinking and problem solving capabilities. Lessons will fall under our PBL framework and be embedded into every day context across the school. Parent and carer information will be sent home through the ‘Newsletter’ and ‘Skoolbag’ to coincide with lessons taught at school to support understanding and promote a supportive environment for students to practise their skills.
