Standard

Musical Articulations

1 2 3 4 5

1) Staccato – light and detached. Literally, ½ of the rhythmic duration.

a. We say “di” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

b. In jazz, this is often “dit” ending the note with the tongue.

2) Legato – smooth and connected. Play for the “full value” or literally until you touch the

next note or rest. The default articulation in a slow ballad or chorale style piece is

legato.

a. We say “doo” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

3) Marcato – Heavy and detached. Literally to perform with emphasis. This is considered

an air attack for wind instruments.

a. We say “Da” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

4) Martellato – Heavy and detached BUT stop the sound with your tongue.

a. We say “Dut” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

5) Fermata – HOLD the note and WATCH THE CONDUCTOR for a release.

Unit 1, White Belt

(BB Qtr. 1)

1) Locker PO (10 Points, 5 for each successful attempt)

a. Demonstrate the ability to open a master lock combination under 20 seconds. You must do it twice; once on a

practice lock, and once on your locker.

2) Assembly PO (10 Points)

a. Demonstrate the ability to assemble your instrument with all applicable accessories.

3) Holding PO (10 Points)

a. Demonstrate the ability to correctly hold your instrument with the proper posture and hand positions.

4) Maintenance PO (10 Points)

a. Have all the necessary equipment to clean and maintain your instrument.

b. Demonstrate the ability to clean and maintain your instrument.

c. Percussionists are excused from this PO and automatically earn the 10 points.

5) Long Tone PO (10 Points, 1 per second; flute and tuba are out of 6 points)

a. Play and hold a concert F for 10 seconds. 6 seconds for flute and tuba.

b. Percussionists are excused for this PO and automatically earn the 10 points.

6) Consistency PO (10 Points, 2 per attempt)

a. Wind players perform a concert F for 5-10 seconds and not miss the note on each entrance.

b. Percussionists are excused for this PO and automatically earn the 10 points.

8) Second Lesson, Line 6, m. 41-49, Articulation PO (10 Points, 2 for each note with proper articulation/rhythmic pattern)

a. Perform concert F, Eb, D, C, and Bb with the proper articulations (“too” or “dee” for clarinets).

b. Percussionists must perform the mallet part and timpani part with correct rhythms. 1 Point for every two measures.

9) Third Lesson, m.1-8 or m.9-16, Playing Steps in One Breath PO (8 Points, 2 for every two measures in one breath/rhythmic

pattern)

a. Perform three half notes in one breath. Keep your fingers close to your instrument. Move your slide fast if you play

trombone.

b. Percussionists must perform the mallet part and timpani part with correct rhythms. 1 Point for every two measures.

10) Third Lesson, m. 17-24 or 25-32, Playing Skips in One Breath PO (8 Points, 2 for every two measures in one breath)

a. The same as PO #8 but with skips!

b. Percussionists must perform the mallet part and timpani part with correct rhythms. 1 Point for every two measures.

11) Third Lesson, m. 65-70, Playing Longer Phrases PO (9 Points, 6 for each measure, 2 for phrasing, 1 for proper tone and

articulation)

a. Play five half notes in one breath! Keep your fingers close and move your slide fast.

b. Percussionists must perform the snare drum part. 1 Point for every measure. 3 points automatically awarded.

12) RP1, Clap and Count Letter D PO (12 points, 1 for each measure)
