SESSION 7ECO-INNOVATION IN THE FOOD SECTOR:INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY IN THE VALUE CHAIN

This section will analyse, from the perspective of environmental sustainability, the food sector, one of the sectors considered to be a priority by the European Commission.

The different talks will highlight the different aspects of the food industry and agriculture related to the LCA: from its strategic approach in the European arena as a means to mitigate environmental impacts, its application in the sector and its modelling in the agrifood systems, to its communication potential through environmental labelling tools.

The session will end with a discussion panel where the main stakeholders of the value chain will discuss the role that they must assume when incorporating the environmental variable in their modus operandi, along with the ensuing advantages and disadvantages.

Objectives of the session:- Identify precedents for the sustainability of the food and agriculture sectors.

Report on the latest steps taken in Europe to introduce the forthcoming European Environmental Footprint in the food sector.

- Provide sustainability strategies in the form of LCA-based approaches, methodologies and tools, which lead to better understanding of the factors that control the impact on farming practices.

- Pinpoint current examples of the application the LCA methodology that are in line with future food consumption patterns and with measuring sustainability for food product systems.

- Foster the exchange of experiences with respect to environmental decision taking in the food supply chain and agriculture.

Aimed at:- Companies linked to the food sector (farmers, producers, packers,

distributors, restaurant and catering professionals, etc.), interested in learning about the latest developments in applying environmental resources in the food sector.
