Scrappy Win Ends Three Game Skid

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The University of Rochester defeated to the Judges of Brandeis University 53-37, Friday night at the Louis Alexandra Palestra. Rochester (18-3, 7-3) won a low scoring battle shooting 21 of 61 (34.4%) while Brandeis shot 13 of 59 (22%). The win snaps a three-game losing skid and keeps the Yellowjackets in second place in the UAA standings behind unbeaten University of Chicago.

Brandeis (8-13, 1-9) controlled the glass early leading with 12 rebounds to the Yellowjackets two in the first 6:24 of the first half. But the Yellowjackets would be the first to strike as sophomore Laney Ming would drain the first points of the game at 18:10. Rochester’s second unit would then produce a 12-0 run to put them up 18-6 with 10:34 remaining in the first half.

Ming would hit a three-pointer at 7:39 and senior Jodie Luther’s put back with 7:16 remaining in the first helped Rochester stretch the lead to 23-8. Rochester closed out the first half shooting 41.9% from the field to put them up, 31-19.

Ming closed out the night with a team-high 11 points, five rebounds and three assists, while shooting 4 of 9 (44%) from the field, 2 of 3 (66.7%) from behind the three-point line and 1 of 2 (50%) from the foul line.

Rochester sophomore center Loren Wagner’s 11 rebounds with eight of them coming on the defensive side would help the Yellowjackets control the glass. Wagner added nine points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field.

Luther finished the night with eight points and four rebounds on 4 of 7 (57%) shooting from the field. The three Yellowjackets tallied 28 of team’s 53 points.

The Judges’ were led by senior guard Morgan Kendrew who finished with eight points on the night. Fellow teammate sophomore Nicolina Vitale registered eight points on 3 of 6 (50%) from the field.

Brandeis was 8 of 13 (61.5%) from the foul line during the second half and finished the game shooting 11 of 19 (57.9%) from the foul in the game.

Rochester returns to action Sunday at 2 pm to face New York University.
