HistoryThe game of basketball, as we know it today was created by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts to condition young athletes during the winter. It consisted of peach baskets and a soccer style ball. He published 13 rules for the new game. He divided his class of 18 into two teams of nine players each and set about to teach them the basics of his new game. The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed. The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.

The Key / Paint

How a game is played?• Two teams of 5 players each try to score points by

tossing the ball into the opposing team´s basket. • They may use only their hands to control the ball,

and are not allowed to run while holding it. • A field goal counts for 2 points, or 3 points if it is

thrown from outside the 3-point line. • A free throw is worth 1 point. • The team with possession of the ball must launch

an attack within the following time limits: After taking possession of the ball, they have 8 seconds to move the ball forward across the mid-court line, and 24 seconds to take a shot at the basket.

• A player must move the ball by dribbling, throwing, or passing it within 5 seconds

Types of Shooting• Jump Shot: Used most frequently for mid- to long-

range shots, including three-point attempts. Jump straight up and use the basic shooting form. Release the ball at the peak of your jump.

• Free Throws Shot: Use the standard shooting form, but don’t jump. Same as the Jump Shot but without jumping.

• Layup: You’ll shoot layups from very close range after dribbling to the basket, or taking a pass near the hoop. Involves grasping the ball with two hands, raising it in front of your face and banking it off the backboard, which all occurs while you’re in motion.

• Dunk: The dunk is the basketball’s most spectacular shot and relies more on jumping ability than shooting skill. If you can jump high enough, and hands large enough to control the ball, leap, lift the ball above the rim and push or throw it through the net.

Lay Ups1. Dribble

2. Take two steps: Right - Left or Left - Right, depending on the side of the court you’re in.

3. Extend your body

4. Release (shoot) the ball as high as you can

Dribbling

• Bend your knees

• Dribble the ball hard to the ground

• Dribbling height below your hip

• Control the ball

Passing

• Direct Pass: Chest to Chest

• Bouncing Pass

• Behind the back

• Between the legs
