5.2 The applicable hydrocarbon services in this project are non-corrosive in nature. Corrosion allowance is considered as below in line with piping material specification & piping schedule k-005510-001:
1.6 mm Carbon Steel and Impact Tested Carbon steel0.0 mm Stainless Steel, Galvanized Carbon Steel & Non metallic RTR /CPVC
5.3 As per the definition of Corrosive and Crack Inducing Sour Environments in SAES-L-133, none of the applicable Hydrocarbon services in this project can be categorized as ‘Sour Service’. Material requirements related to sour environment including NACE requirements are not applicable to this project.
5.4 Basis of Pipe Wall Thickness calculations is as follows:
Minimum pipe wall thickness is selected as per SAES-L-310 and SAES-L-105. Thickness calculations
are based on class limit conditions of ASME B16.5 in general. In few selective (large diameters and
higher class rating) cases where thickness is specified as ‘Calculate’ (as indicated in notes under
Appendix-A) in K-005510-001/SAES-L-105, pipe thickness is calculated based on the maximum line
design condition.
In few cases (as indicated in notes under Appendix-A) corrosion allowance is adjusted (reduced to
1.3 mm min.) to reach to the nearest minimum schedule. However, the selected thicknesses are
considered qualified to be used under class rating conditions.
6. Technical notes
i) Pipe selection has been done with the following criteria meeting the requirements specified under
individual piping classes of K-005510-001/SAES-L-105:
- Carbon Steel Pipes: (1CS9P, 3CS9P, 6CS9P, 9CS9P)
Up to 2” NB: Seamless,
3” NB and above: Double Submerged Arc Welded
In case Double Submerged Arc Welded pipes are not available in lower sizes, seamless pipes
shall be used.
- Impact Tested Carbon Steel : (1CA9P, 3CA9P, 6CA9P)
Up to 14” NB: Seamless
16” NB and above: Welded
- Stainless Steel : (1SD0PC, 3SD0PC, 6SD0PC)
Up to 2” NB: Seamless
3” NB and above: Welded
In case ASTM A-358 Cl.1 pipes are not available in lower sizes, seamless pipes per
ASTM A-312 shall be used.

iv) All API pipes shall be as per Saudi Aramco specification 01-SAMSS-035 with the following
exceptions in Clause V – “Modifications to API SPEC 5L” of this specification:
- Clause 4.2: Optional Requirements (addition) point no. (a), (b) & (c) are not applicable.
- Clause 5.1.2 (addition): Welding Procedures for Sour service point 1 to 4 are not applicable.
- Clause 6.2.6.3: Supplementary Fracture Toughness Tests (addition) not applicable
- Clause 6.3: Residual Stress Test (addition) not applicable
- Clause 7.2.2 associated with “pipeline automatic welding” is not applicable
- Clause 7.8.14: Other defects (addition) not applicable
- Appendix-F “Supplementary Requirements” of 01-SAMSS-035
. SR15 point no.1 (regarding report of residual stress test) is not applicable.
. SR HIC is not applicable.
v) Pipes for Low temperature service (ASTM A333 & A671 grades) shall additionally meet the
requirement of cl.4.2 of Saudi Aramco specification SAES-L-130
vi) Seamless in place of welded pipes and higher grades in same material in place of lower are
acceptable.
e.g.: A106 Gr.B /A333 Gr.6 pipes acceptable in place of API 5l Gr.B
API 5l Gr.60 acceptable in place of API Gr.B.
vii) Pipe thickness calculation is done as per ASME B31.3 for all metal piping maintaining the
requirements of K-005510-001 & SAES-L-105 in general, the selected thicknesses and related
comments are summarized in Appendix-A.
Thicknesses for RTR piping classes shall be finalized in consultation with the suppliers with approval
from client.
