Welcome to Basingstoke Festival of Choirs…Tonight’s concert is our third collaboration in making music together. It is heartwarming towitness the sharing of talents amongst the singers, many of them taking the advantage ofattending the rehearsals of a number of our choirs over the months, experiencing a warmwelcome and friendship in addition to the learning opportunities. There are still many potentialsingers in our communities who could be making a valuable contribution to the choirs but aresimply inhibited, believing they are “not good enough to sing with you” – if you know of anyonewho thinks like this then please tell them to make contact with us through our websitehttps://basingstokefestivalofchoirs.co.uk/ and encourage them to come and sing with one, ormore, of our groups – hopefully proving that they really are “good enough”. Over the years I havecome across many singers who have regretted not joining their choir earlier. Once in membershipthey will experience a very special friendship as a result.

Once more I have to express our indebtedness to the Four Lanes Trust for supporting us sogenerously together with the Basingstoke Theatre Trust for their very helpful contribution.

I hope you enjoy our offering tonight under the banner of “Best of British” affording us theopportunity to pay tribute to two of our finest ambassadors: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II andWilliam Shakespeare.

Basingstoke Choral Society has been bringing choral music to audiences in the area since 1889and with around 160 members is currently one of the largest SATB choirs in the South of England. The choir not only specialises in well-known choral works from the repertoire but also performsmore modern choral pieces.

The choir gives three concerts each year and is privileged to have The Anvil in Basingstoke as itsmain venue as well as performing regularly at Douai Abbey and Winchester Cathedral. We useprofessional orchestras and soloists at all our concerts and this helps us to bring music of thehighest standard to our audiences.

We also enjoy the opportunity to perform joint concerts with other choral societies. This gives usthe opportunity to perform works demanding a large choir as well as singing in a variety ofvenues.

BCS has been a part of the musical life of Basingstoke for over 100 years. We are enormously fortunate in having David Gibson as our MusicalDirector and thanks to his commitment and inspiration we know we willbe singing and performing for many years to come.

Basingstoke Hospital Male Voice ChoirMusical Director: David OgbornAccompanists: Steve Busby and Paul Wright

Rehearse: Wednesdays 7.30pm–9.30pm at Basingstoke Hospital Canteen

The Basingstoke Hospital Male Voice Choir was born in March 2011 with an ambitious group of12 enthusiasts, and in 14 months has grown to 40 members who are justly proud of theirstunning sound.

Choristers include a doctor, theatre nurse, chief medical administrator, and even the hospitalchaplain, aptly named David Grace! Additionally, a number of outside choristers have beeninvited to join, and are expertly led by musical director David Ogborn.

Our Hospital Chief Executive, Mary Edwards, believes singing is good for people as it easesstress, whether you take part or listen – hence our motto ‘Sing for Health’.

In its infancy the choir was asked to perform at the Basingstoke Hospital Annual Nurses’ Awardsand was so well received the request has been repeated. We have also sung at WinchesterCathedral as part of the 20th anniversary of St Michael’s Hospice. Our full diary can be found onour website bhmvc.hostoi.com/.

The choir is a really happy bunch of male singers who love music including popular ballads, showtunes, spirituals, and those wonderful Welsh hymns!

The Choir has sung at many events and venues where local charities have been holding a fundraising event and is very proud of its achievement in helping to raise a considerable amount ofmoney for good causes and are actively assisting with fund raising for the Ark Cancer CentreCharity. They are very proud to be a member of Basingstoke Festival of Choirs and have sung atthe Anvil Hall for all of events the festival has staged.

This year the choir has a varied diary of concerts in and around Hampshire and, in September areembarking on their first concert tour with a trip to South Wales to join forces with Choirs in theregion.

Steventon SingersMusical Director: Marilyn WrightAccompanist: Paul WrightRehearse: Fortnightly Tuesdays 8.00pm–9.30pm at Steventon Village Hall

The Steventon Singers is an off-shoot of the Steventon Players. The Steventon Players, formed in 2004, are an all-age (currently2 to over 80!) group of villagers, families and friends who cometogether primarily to stage an annual show or pantomime inthe village, although they have also appeared at The Anvil! Forone of the smallest villages in the Borough, the range anddepth of talent within Steventon is quite remarkable, so it isnot unusual for more than a quarter of the residents to beinvolved in the Players’ productions.

The enthusiastic singing which is invariably a feature of theproductions has gradually encouraged many of the members towant to get together on a more regular basis just to sing forfun, and so a new ‘community choir’ was born. Meetingtypically once a month the Steventon Singers now have aregular attendance of over 20 members, many of whom do notread music and are completely new to ‘non-unison’ choralsinging. They are enjoying exploring a wide range of music in avariety of genres and styles, having recently played a key rolein Steventon Goes West. They are now preparing to star inPride and Prejudice, the panto. Whilst rehearsals are mainly ahappy mixture of fun and fellowship, preparing the music forthis evening’s concert has also involved a great deal of hardwork and commitment.

Heritage Light OrchestraMusical Director: Neil Streeter

The Heritage Light Orchestra was formed by Neil Streeter for a“one off charity concert” for Basingstoke Lions in 2013. Thisconcert will be their 9th! In April they gave their 4th Concertfor the Lions and have also given two charity concerts inNewbury and last summer performed in a barn in FarleighWallop. They already have bookings as far ahead as June

2018!

The players are drawn from musicians that Neil has got to knowfrom teaching for the Music Services of Hampshire and Berkshire,

together with those he has worked with as a percussion player ormusical director for operatic societies in the two counties.

They all play regularly for symphony and show orchestras, many teach their instrument, whilstmany of the younger players (a deliberate feature of the orchestra) play for county ensembles orare students at a music conservatoire. Their experience means that they can sight read the musicvery quickly – most of their concerts are put on after just two rehearsals – and sometimes afterjust one rehearsal on the day!

The orchestra’s title reflects theirs, and Neil’s, love for playing light orchestral and theatre music– which gives Neil the opportunity to invite experienced singers that he has worked with over aperiod 26 years with Basingstoke Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS).
