What is RORRULE

• RORRULEs can be written for a variety of purposes but all are written in

the same way.


What is RORRULE

• SQL = Structured Query Language.

• Pronounced S-Q-L or sequel.

• The industry standard language for

relational databases.

• Provides a way to ask the database

questions.


What is RORRULE

• Some uses in Banner Financial Aid:

Population selections.

Variables.

Tracking, Budgeting, Packaging, and Fund

Awarding rules.

Web Text rules.


Creating RORRULE rules

• Simple mode vs. Expert mode

Start in Simple mode

Edit/Add code in Expert mode

Primary Key Joins are done

Do NOT copy and paste from Word

• Access Expert mode by:

Performing Next Block from Simple mode.

Selecting Options > Compiled/Expert SQL Code.

Tips for Using RORRULE

• If your rule is not producing the desired results, examine it in Expert mode.

• Check whether there is a join you are not expecting such as, to :TERM, when you don’t mean for the rule to be term-specific.

This can be identified and removed when using Expert mode.

• Use comments in this format : /*comment*/



• Before using Expert mode, create as much of the rule as possible in Simple mode and compile it.

• In Expert mode, make sure that you have at least one space following :AIDY, :PIDM and :TERM.

• The Execute button gives you an idea of syntax errors, but it doesn't execute exactly the way the COBOL program will

execute.

• When constructing selection statements surround selection statements connected with an OR with an open and closed parenthesis.

Recommended even if it appears unnecessary.

Without parentheses, Banner may be forced to make assumptions on how to process the data.

Enter the data in a way that Banner will know for sure how you want it processed.

• Do not use a view as the first rule on the Simple rule form.

• UNION, INTERSECT, and MINUS cannot be

used in RORRULEs

• The :PIDM variable must be included and

must be the last rule.

• The :TERM and :PERIOD variables cannot

be used in Fund Awarding (Type A) and

Packaging Group Fund Awarding (Type F)

rules.

table, not the form, when you enter your

SQL (for example, RPRAWRD, not

RPAAWRD).
