What's In Your Toolbox? Some Tools You Must Have

• There are some basic tools that every homeowner should have, whether it’s to repair a wobbly chair leg, fix a simple leak or hang a mirror or a picture frame. Here they are

A Hammer

• There are a surprising number of hammers, but most people can make do with a 16 ounce hammer with a curved claw. The hammer of course, can drive nails and the claw is used to pull them out. A good handle for a hammer is made of fiberglass, which delivers less shock to the arm when it’s being used.

A Hammer

• If a homeowner has a really challenging job, they might want to use a 20 ounce hammer with a ripping claw. This hammer can pull out studs as well as nails.

A Screwdriver

• As with hammers, there are many types of screwdrivers, and the homeowner would do well to buy a set. Though they come in many lengths in sizes, they basically have either a Phillips or a slotted head.

A Screwdriver

• The reason a homeowner needs a set is because the heads come in different sizes and it’s important that the screwdriver fit the screw. A screwdriver that’s either too large or too small for the screw will either damage the screw or damage the material. A screw can also be inserted or removed by a power drill with special bits.

Wrenches

• The first wrench to buy would be an adjustable wrench, which can deal with many types of jobs. They come from four to 16 inches long, with the six, eight and 10 inch long wrenches being the most popular. They can do just about any sort of job around the house.

Wrenches

• Pipe wrenches are also necessary for pipes and the ideal is to buy two of them. These are wrenches used for stopping leaks to installing new pipes. Other wrenches are fixed jaw wrenches. These are smaller than the other wrenches and so can fit into spaces other wrenches can’t. They’re good for working with appliances.

• Allen or hex key wrenches are used to adjust set screws and Allen head screws. They often come in packages of different sizes.

Pliers

• Pliers are use to hold, turn and cut objects. Pliers meant to hold have serrated jaws, while turners have teeth made to grab on to nuts and bolts. Cutters have smooth jaws with cutting edges.

Pliers

• They’re use to cut wires and small fastenings. There are many other kinds of pliers, including lock joint pliers, wide mouth lock joint pliers and even pliers used to retrieve things that have dropped down the drain.

A Power Drill

• A power drill is an amazing and versatile tool that can not only be used for drilling holes in just about every material, but for polishing and buffing. For regular use, the homeowner can buy a 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch drill, all of which deliver a surprising amount of power.

A Power Drill

• The drill should be variable speed and the speed should depend on nothing more complicated than how hard the user squeezes the trigger. A reversible drill is also very handy, for it lets the homeowner pull screws out without them binding.
