Using These Cards

These range cards have been developed by the Virginia Rider Training Program (VRTP) to assist and guide VRTP-certified RiderCoaches in conducting the Basic RiderCourse in accordance with VRTP policies and procedures. Provided below and on subsequent pages are general guidelines for using these cards, a list of acronyms, a legend for the symbols used in the cards, and other useful information. FOUR-PAGE FORMAT: Several exercises in these range cards use four pages (vs. the standard two-page format) based on the information involved in the exercise. In these cases, the information has been organized so that the RC who reads the exercise may focus predominantly on pages 1 & 2, while the demo rider may focus predominantly on pages 3 & 4. In some cases, additional information that would normally appear on page 2 in this format appears on page 3. When this occurs, there is a reference on page 2 to additional information on page 3. The exercises that use the four-page format are Ex 1, 4, 9, 15, 16 and 17.

Using These Cards

INTRODUCTION: The Basic RiderCourse is designed to be a safe, effective, and enjoyable training event for participants who have little or no riding experience. The primary task of an RC is to ensure a low risk learning environment consistent with the principles of this curriculum. ACTION STEPS: Each of the range cards contains a numbered sequence of action steps. With each action step there is supporting information. The information under the numbered steps (bullets) should be read verbatim to students up to and including the evaluations. This includes the objective, range setup, definitions (if any), instructions and evaluations. It is suggested that RCs minimize any elaboration when reading an exercise before starting the demo since many points of elaboration may be covered by the demo. Extensive elaboration/coaching also effects students’ riding time and may inhibit motor skill development (see Motor Skill Principles in the RCG). Evaluations may be read to students before or during the demo as long as they are read verbatim at least once. RCs may then narrate the demo, paraphrasing and re-emphasizing the evaluations as they occur during the demo. The numbered steps are instructions for RCs and should not be read verbatim to students. However, RCs should paraphrase the numbered steps when reading an exercise to students before the demo to clarify the information that follows. Examples include, “The objective for this exercise is…”, “The range setup for this exercise is…”, and, “The definition of a good entry speed is the speed…”. Action steps that should not be read to students include conducting the exercise, reversals, transitions and parking. DEMOS: Demo action steps and PoT are provided for each exercise following the evaluation points. RCs must adhere to these steps and PoT when riding demos. In addition to properly demonstrating all evaluation points for each exercise, demo riders must also show: • FINE-C to start engine and Thumb/Key/Valve to shut

down • Power walk a few steps to start out • Keep the clutch covered even on Day 2 (except when

showing Part 1 of Ex 15) • Emphasize head turns and head checks when

appropriate (i.e. when turning/cornering, at PNGs, after perimeter turns, etc.)

• Ride at novice speed • Make sure to show the complete path of travel, including

return to Parking when appropriate (e.g. at the end of the demo for Ex 14)

ii VRTP Range Cards

Using These Cards

SIMULATED PRACTICE (SP): SPs are an important learning tool to help riders think about, and to some extent feel, what is new or different about an upcoming skill or technique in an exercise. SPs shall be used when stated in the range cards and should be accomplished in one minute or less. SPs are conducted with the motorcycle’s engine off and both feet on the ground. Action steps are provided for each SP. RCs must adhere to these steps when conducting SPs. RCs should be in front of and facing riders when conducting SPs and RCs must make sure all riders participate and perform SPs correctly. SPs can also be used for remedial purposes. EXERCISE TIMES: The times indicated for each exercise are timed from the start of the reading of the exercise to the conclusion of the debrief for that exercise. RCs shall run each exercise no less than the time indicated on the range cards. RCs may run an exercise longer in order to accommodate student needs. Remember, the less time we spend talking, the more time students have to ride. COACHING: The goal of coaching on the range is to help each rider develop as much as possible. Accomplishing this goal involves providing timely coaching tips through the continuous and effective application of the Observe, Analyze, Coach and Reinforce (OACR) process. Refer to the RCG for more information about Coaching on the Range. COACH POSITIONS: The coaching positions on the range cards are the start points for each exercise. RCs are encouraged to first evaluate each rider and then adjust coaching positions as needed to provide individual coaching to that rider. When individual coaching is completed, RCs should return to the suggested C1 or C2 positions on the range cards. RANGE SAFETY: Remember that range safety is a priority at all times. RCs shall adjust their coaching positions to maintain visual control of the range and ensure a low risk, positive learning environment. Refer to the RCG for more information about Range Management. DEBRIEFING: At the end of each exercise, RCs should ask Learner-Centered Questions (LCQs) to ensure that riders understand the significance of the skills practiced and learned. Debriefs shall be brief - VRTP suggests no longer than two minutes. Sample debrief questions are provided for each exercise. However, RCs are encouraged to develop and use their own LCQs for exercises. RCs should avoid lecturing and allow the students to do the most talking. In a learner-centered environment, the person doing the most talking is most often the one doing the most learning. BREAKS: At a minimum, breaks must be given when indicated on the cards. Additional breaks may be given at RC discretion to accommodate weather and other circumstances as appropriate.

Using These Cards

DAY 1 / DAY 2: Do not teach past Ex 9 on range Day 1. You may stop your class earlier due to weather or other circumstances and conclude exercises on range Day 2. Do not start range Day 2 with warm-up laps or an abbreviated version of Ex 6. You may have riders practice Part 1 of Ex 2 (Group Rocking) as a warm up / refresher at the start of range Day 2. This is optional. CONES: Set up only one exercise at a time. For example, do not set up the interior of Ex 6 (PNG & CCL) with Ex 5. Additional cones may be placed in order to assist the rider with the path of travel as long as these additional cones do not create a safety hazard. MSF range cones are specifically designed to compress when run over by an M/C for safety purposes. For this reason, do not stack cones or place cones on their sides; either situation may defeat this design feature.

The use of colored cones is optional and may be site-specific.

The middle interior cone in the perimeter turns in exercises 4, 6, 9 and 10 starts on the same line as the two end cones in Ex 4. It then moves progressively inside the turn in one foot increments (approximately) in Ex 6, 9 and 10 so that  by Ex 10, it forms an effective 90-degree turn as follows:

PARKING: When coming into the Parking Area, motorcycles should come in from front to back and right to left (from the riders’ perspective), as follows (layout may be site-specific):

iv November 2013 VRTP Range Cards

Using These Cards

PARKING (cont’d): As soon as a rider’s front tire stops at his parking spot (often a painted or taped ‘T’ in the Parking Area), the student should shut the engine off using the Thumb/Key/Valve process and remain seated on their motorcycle until all other riders have parked and shut down. When leaving the Parking Area, motorcycles should leave from front to back and left to right (from the riders’ perspective), as shown below (layout may be site-specific). RC should remain in position to maintain visual control of the range and the riders as they leave the Parking Area as follows: HELMET FIT & USE: Helmets should fit snugly without being uncomfortable. Riders should not be able to roll or move the helmet around on their head once it is fastened. If it fits right, their skin should move as the helmet is moved. RCs should show riders how to fasten it securely using the chin strap and D-rings. When not being worn, helmets should be placed bottom down where they are not likely to be kicked, knocked around or dropped. On the ground on the left side of the motorcycle, near/under the front tire for protection is often a good place. Helmets should not be left on the motorcycle seat or hanging on the handlebars, mirrors, etc. A drop from even that height may damage a helmet’s effectiveness in a crash.

HAND SIGNALS: (show prior to use for the first time)

• Start Engine • Stop Engine • Neutral • First Gear • Head and Eyes Up • Head Turns • Stop

• Speed up • Slow down • Knees Against Tank • Return to Parking • Weave • Spread Out • Get Closer

HOUSEKEEPING: (may be site –specific)

• Cell Phones • Rest Rooms • Water / Vending • Parking

• First Aid Kit • Fire Extinguisher • Other as appropriate

Ex 1 - Motorcycle Familiarization 30 minutes – No Demo, Static Practice

Range Setup • Motorcycles shall be staggered and offset in the

event a rider inadvertently releases the clutch and the motorcycle moves forward or a rider falls over from a stopped position.

Assign a motorcycle to each rider • Students may be allowed to initially choose the

motorcycle they wish to ride. However, RCs should adjust any obvious mismatches based size, fit, weight and other factors as appropriate

Read objective and evaluations • To identify location and operation of important

controls and parts • Use controls smoothly • Use side stand fully • Squeeze front brake when mounting/dismounting • Use good posture • Use FINE-C and proper shutdown procedures

Provide instructions as riders perform • Walk around motorcycle identifying major controls • Check fuel valve positions – explain differences • Check ignition switch and choke locations • With protective gear on, properly mount motorcycle • Raise stand and assume good posture • Lean motorcycle left/right to feel its weight

Identify and manipulate the following • Handlebars

- Full left, full right, center - Press (push) and lean right, center - Press (push) and lean left, center

• Throttle - Check operation - Roll-on full, roll-off - Roll-on half, roll-off - With wrist flat, roll-on quarter turn, roll-off

• Front brake lever - Squeeze and release - Practice roll-off/brake squeeze

• Engine cut-off switch • Electric start button • Clutch lever

- Note that squeezing the clutch lever removes engine power from the rear wheel; squeeze the lever promptly if control is lost

• Choke – explain choke use • Fuel supply valve • Point to shift lever • Verify placement and operation of rear brake pedal

2 November 2013 VRTP Range Cards

Ex 1 - Motorcycle Familiarization 24 Cones

The location and configuration of M/Cs for Ex 1 is optional

and may be site-specific as long as it meets the objective of having the M/Cs staggered and offset. Spacing between M/Cs should allow:

• An M/C in the back row(s) to move past any M/C in the front row(s) without hitting one in the event a rider inadvertently releases the clutch and the M/C moves forward

• Any M/C to fall over in either direction without the M/C or rider hitting the M/C next to it

Instructions in these range cards may refer to “near side”,

“far side”, “top-of-range” or “bottom-of-range”. Note these reference points in the diagram above. “Near side” and “far side” are relative to the Parking Area as shown in these diagrams.

Page 7: Basic Rider Course Range Cards - vrtp.org Range Cards - Single Page View.pdf · MSF range cones are specifically designed to compress when run over 11by an M/C for safety purposes

Ex 1 - Motorcycle Familiarization

Prepare for next exercise • Have riders move into position for next exercise.

RCs should split the riders into two groups for the transition. During the transition, RCs should have riders: - Practice front brake operation in response to RC

hand and/or verbal signals - Practice backing up while looking over shoulder

• Riders shall be allowed to either walk alongside or straddle walk their scooter or motorcycle based on the physical condition of the riders, weather and/or range layout. RCs shall be allowed to use either or both practices.

• In addition to moving riders into position for the next exercise, the key objective during the transition is for riders to become familiar with the sensitivity of the front brake. Riders should be able to complete a stop without front-end dive and to stop smoothly by using ONLY the front brake. Make sure riders don’t cover the front brake during the transition

• Depending on the range layout, riders should ideally walk or straddle walk their scooter or motorcycle around the range for at least one long side and one short side of the range and no more than all four sides of a range. A site-specific transition may be used as long as the riders are provided sufficient opportunity to meet the objective stated above

• This practice builds muscle memory. Fine motor skill development related to front brake application will be needed for later exercises when front brake use will be required or when a rider chooses to use the front brake in less than ideal circumstances (i.e. handlebars turned)

4 November 2013 VRTP Range Cards

SKILL TEST Evals 1 & 2 - U-Turns and Swerve

Objective To demonstrate your basic motorcycle-control skills and your ability to avoid an obstacle in your path. Riders must follow directions in a manner that allows fair and accurate scoring of the skill, or maximum points may be assessed.

Description You will ride two U-turns and then swerve to avoid an obstacle.

Directions: (Pre-brief the group)

1. Throughout this and all subsequent evaluations, there

are two things that will result in stopping your test with an unsuccessful score: a. An intentional unsafe act b. Falling or dropping the motorcycle

2. On signal, you will ride into the box and make two U-

turns, one in each direction, while remaining within the area bounded by the solid lines.

3. You will lose points on the U-turns for:

a. Crossing a line, or boundary b. Putting a foot down.

4. After exiting the U-turn box, ride toward the obstacle at a

speed between 12 and 18 mph. 5. Maintain a steady speed.

6. When you reach the cue cones, swerve to the right to

avoid the obstacle and recover through the escape lane. After clearing the escape lane and straightening, stop.

7. You will lose points on the swerve for:

a. Hitting the obstacle b. Braking during the swerve c. Crossing escape boundary d. Failing to attain a proper speed or anticipating on a

second attempt e. Swerving in the wrong direction on a second

attempt

8. When signaled, ride to the next starting point and shut down.

Note: Do not conduct Evals 1, 2 and 3 at the same time. You must stop, read and conduct Eval 3 separately from Evals 1 & 2.

SWERVE

Hits obstacle 10 Brakes during swerve 5 Crosses escape boundary 5 Improper speed (2nd attempt) 15 Anticipation (2nd attempt) 15 Swerving in the wrong direction (2nd attempt) 15

Maximum Penalty 15

Notes:

1. For the U-turn, “crossing boundary” is for one or both tires.

2. For the swerve, “hits obstacle” refers to the barrier line

(painted and/or cones) that blocks the approach. 3. “Hits obstacle” or “crosses escape boundary” is scored

only if the contact patch of the tire clearly crosses completely over a painted/taped line or the imaginary line joining the outer edges of cones’ bases.

4. Reruns for the swerve are made:

a. If the speed is too slow, and the rider did not “hit obstacle” or cross a boundary,

b. If there is an anticipation (an obvious brake application or hitting/skipping a cue cone with the front tire),

c. If the speed is too fast (under .72 seconds) and the swerve is unsuccessful,

d. If the swerve is in the wrong direction. 5. Only one rerun is allowed. 6. The cue cones for the swerve are 13’ from the barrier and

3’ apart. 7. Timing begins when the front tire crosses the first timing

line and ends when the front tire passes the cue cones.

8. Timing for 20’ zone is 1.15 seconds or lower.

SKILL TEST Eval 3 - Quick Stop

Objective To demonstrate your ability to avoid a hazard by stopping quickly. Description You will ride toward the stopping area. At the cue cones, you will stop in the shortest distance that you safely can. Directions: (Pre-brief the group)

1. On signal, you will accelerate quickly to a speed between

12 and 18 mph in 2nd gear. 2. Maintain a steady speed until your front tire reaches the

cue cones. Do not anticipate the stop by slowing or applying the brakes before the cue cones.

3. When your front tire passes the cue cones:

a. Stop in the shortest distance that you safely can, shifting into 1st gear during the stop

b. Once stopped, do not move until signaled 4. On signal, ride to the next starting point and stop. 5. You will lose points for:

a. Stopping beyond the standard distance for your speed

b. Failing to use both brakes c. Failing to shift down to 1st gear d. On the second attempt, failing to attain a proper

speed or anticipating the stop

SCORING Penalty Points QUICK STOP

Stops beyond standard 1 per foot (10 max) Did not use both brakes 5 Fails to shift to 1st gear 5 Improper speed (2nd attempt) 15 Anticipation (2nd attempt) 15

Maximum Penalty 15 Notes:

1. Timing begins when the front tire crosses the first timing

line and ends when the front tire passes the cue cones. Stopping distance is measured at the leading edge of the front tire, to the next higher foot.

2. If the rider does not shift to second gear, 5 points accrue

for “failure to shift to first gear.”

SKILL TEST Eval 3 - Quick Stop

3. Reruns are made:

a. If the speed is too slow, b. There is an anticipation (an obvious brake

application prior to cue cones), or c. If the speed is too fast and the maximum stopping

standard is not achieved. Only one rerun is allowed

Time (sec) Standard (ft) 0.72 to 0.75 20 0.76 to 0.79 18 0.80 to 0.84 16 0.85 to 0.90 14 0.91 to 0.97 13 0.98 to 1.05 11 1.06 to 1.14 9 1.15 8

SKILL TEST Eval 4 - Cornering

Objective To demonstrate your ability to use proper technique to negotiate a curve. Description You will ride through two curves demonstrating proper technique. Only the 135-degree curve is scored. Directions: (Pre-brief the group)

1. On signal, accelerate toward the first curve, shifting to

2nd gear. 2. Ride through the first curve and continue to accelerate to

about 20 mph. 3. Slow to an appropriate entry speed for the next curve,

remaining in 2nd gear. 4. Plan to ride safely without exceeding the boundaries

marked by the cones and painted lines. This is a timed evaluation. You will have to go fast enough to demonstrate the technique (approximately 12 to 17 mph).

5. Make a smooth, continuous turn through the second

curve using correct technique. 6. After exiting the curve, stop at the cones near the

perimeter; then on signal, ride to the Parking Area, shut down and dismount.

7. You will lose points for:

a. Not using both brakes to slow b. Looking down at the cones or lines c. Decelerating while in the curve d. Crossing a boundary e. Riding too slowly

SKILL TEST Eval 4 - Cornering

Notes:

1. Timing starts and ends when the front tire enters and

exits the 135-degree sector marked by the painted lines and the slash marks in the center of the dashed lines.

2. Deceleration is scored while any part of the motorcycle is

within the 135-degree sector marked by the painted arcs and slash marks in the center of the dashed lines.

3. Crossing a boundary is scored if the contact patch of

either tire clearly crosses completely over any of the solid painted or dashed lines, or if a tire hits or “skips” an entry or exit cone.

4. This evaluation may be run in either direction.
