NEWS AND VIEWS BASF green pigment receives FDA approval The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval to BASF for its phthalo- cyanine pigment Heliogen ® Green K 9360 under the Food Contact Notification (FCN) pro- gramme. BASF says this is the first time that a pigment with this Colour Index number (Pigment Green 36) has been granted such approval. The pigment is approved for use as a food-contact substance in all types of polymers. Heliogen Green K 9360 is said to be very versa- tile with an excellent range of features. It has excellent heat resistance, light fastness and weathering resistance, and it is very easy to process, BASF says. It provides very yellowish, brilliant shades with very high colour strength. According to the FDA approval, the coloured polymers may be used according to conditions of use C-G in table 2 of 21 CFR 176.170(c) and not to exceed temperatures of 70°C. The com- pany says his decision came as a complete sur- prise. Great Lakes has appointed Nigel Andrews to the position of non-executive chairman with John Gallagher III as acting chief executive. A new CEO is to be sought. Bulriss, a chemical engineer, made his name at GE, where he spent 16 years. He moved up to gen- eral manager of the ABS business, and then left in 1993 to join Allied Signal, where he was president of the polymers division from 1996 to 1998. He joined Great Lakes in April 1998 as president and CEO and was named chairman in May 2000. Andrews has served on the Great Lakes board as an independent director since 2000. Gallagher joined Great Lakes in May 2001 from UOP LLC, where he was vice president and chief financial officer since 1999. In addition, Jeffrey Potrzebowski, Great Lakes’ VP for Financial Planning and Investor Relations, has been named acting chief financial officer. Elsewhere, Kerr-McGee Corp has named Tom Adams VP of chemical with responsibility for all aspects of the company’s chemical opera- tions. Adams was formerly VP and general manager of the Kerr-McGee’s Titanium Dioxide Pigment Division. Company chairman/CEO Luke Corbett says that Adams’ experience and strong leadership will enable Kerr-McGee to capitalize on “an improving worldwide market for titanium dioxide”. Adams has more than 20 years of service with the company. In the UK, Holliday Pigments, a leading manu- facturer of ultramarine blue pigments, has appointed Steve Bell as its new sales & marketing director. He has been brought in to help consoli- date Holliday’s position in the ultramarine indus- try as well as expanding the business and driving growth in new markets and territories. Bell joins the company from Magna Colours, where he has spent four years as commercial director.
