BASF green pigment receivesFDA approvalThe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)has granted approval to BASF for its phthalo-cyanine pigment Heliogen® Green K 9360under the Food Contact Notification (FCN) pro-gramme. BASF says this is the first time that apigment with this Colour Index number(Pigment Green 36) has been granted suchapproval. The pigment is approved for use as afood-contact substance in all types of polymers.

Heliogen Green K 9360 is said to be very versa-tile with an excellent range of features. It hasexcellent heat resistance, light fastness andweathering resistance, and it is very easy toprocess, BASF says. It provides very yellowish,brilliant shades with very high colour strength.According to the FDA approval, the colouredpolymers may be used according to conditionsof use C-G in table 2 of 21 CFR 176.170(c) andnot to exceed temperatures of 70°C.

Bulriss resigns from GreatLakes, other personnel news Mark Bulriss, chairman and chief executive ofadditives giant Great Lakes Chemical Corp,resigned unexpectedly at the beginning ofNovember citing “personal reasons”. The com-pany says his decision came as a complete sur-prise. Great Lakes has appointed Nigel Andrewsto the position of non-executive chairman withJohn Gallagher III as acting chief executive. Anew CEO is to be sought.

Bulriss, a chemical engineer, made his name atGE, where he spent 16 years. He moved up to gen-eral manager of the ABS business, and then left in1993 to join Allied Signal, where he was presidentof the polymers division from 1996 to 1998. Hejoined Great Lakes in April 1998 as president andCEO and was named chairman in May 2000.Andrews has served on the Great Lakes board asan independent director since 2000. He is a

veteran of the General Electric Company holdingsenior executive roles in GE Plastics and GECapital. Gallagher joined Great Lakes in May2001 from UOP LLC, where he was vice presidentand chief financial officer since 1999. In addition,Jeffrey Potrzebowski, Great Lakes’ VP forFinancial Planning and Investor Relations, hasbeen named acting chief financial officer.

Elsewhere, Kerr-McGee Corp has named TomAdams VP of chemical with responsibility forall aspects of the company’s chemical opera-tions. Adams was formerly VP and generalmanager of the Kerr-McGee’s Titanium DioxidePigment Division. Company chairman/CEOLuke Corbett says that Adams’ experience andstrong leadership will enable Kerr-McGee tocapitalize on “an improving worldwide marketfor titanium dioxide”. Adams has more than 20years of service with the company.

In the UK, Holliday Pigments, a leading manu-facturer of ultramarine blue pigments, hasappointed Steve Bell as its new sales & marketingdirector. He has been brought in to help consoli-date Holliday’s position in the ultramarine indus-try as well as expanding the business and drivinggrowth in new markets and territories. Bell joinsthe company from Magna Colours, where he hasspent four years as commercial director.

Addcolour goes into receivershipWigan, UK-based colour masterbatch and com-pound manufacturer Addcolour Plastics is for saleafter administrative receivers were called in at thebeginning of November. Around 20 workers havebeen given redundancy notices while a skeletonstaff of six is working to fulfil current orders.
